Hi Phil, I understand youâre having trouble with PharoLauncher on your M3 MacBook Air, hanging when trying to connect to files.pharo.org. Here are several steps that usually help resolve this issue: 1. Check your network connection Open Terminal and run: curl -I https://files.pharo.org â¢ If it returns HTTP/2 200, the connection is fine. â¢ If it fails, try switching Wi-Fi networks or disconnecting from VPN. â¢ Also check that you can open https://files.pharo.org in your browser. 2. Clear PharoLauncher cache Old settings or caches can cause the launcher to hang: mv ~/Library/Application\ Support/PharoLauncher ~/Library/Application\ Support/PharoLauncher.bak Then restart PharoLauncher. It will create fresh settings. 3. Manually download a Pharo image â¢ Go to https://files.pharo.org and download the image you need (e.g., Pharo 10 latest stable). â¢ Unzip the .zip file, which will contain a .image and .changes file. â¢ In PharoLauncher, use Add Local Image to select the .image file and start it. 4. Check macOS security & firewall â¢ Go to System Settings â Network â Firewall. â¢ Make sure PharoLauncher is allowed to connect. â¢ If using Intel (x86) binaries on Apple Silicon, consider using the native ARM64 version. 5. Apple Silicon specific note â¢ Make sure you downloaded the ARM64 version of PharoLauncher for your M3 Mac. â¢ You can test by launching from Terminal: arch -arm64 /Applications/PharoLauncher.app/Contents/MacOS/PharoLauncher 6. Debugging Launch PharoLauncher from Terminal to see logs and connection errors: /Applications/PharoLauncher.app/Contents/MacOS/PharoLauncher If network issues persist, manually downloading the image and using the local image option is a reliable workaround. Problem reinstalling PharoLauncher under macOS arm64

Hi Iâm having trouble reinstalling PharoLauncher on an M3 MacBook Air running Sequoia 15.6.1. I uninstalled a working version of PharoLauncher (long story) and then downloaded and installed a new version. On launch, a Pharo window opens and then it hangs trying to connect to âfiles.pharo.orgâ. Iâd be grateful for any help. Phil

UKSTUG Meeting: Esteban Lorenzano - Pharo 13 - 24 September 2025

Earlier this year, the Pharo development team announced the availability of Pharo 13 ( https://pharo.org/news/2025-05-21-pharo13-released.html ). For our September 2025 meeting, Pharo's release manager Esteban Lorenzano will give us a tour of the new version - what's changed, and what remains the same. Esteban Lorenzano ( https://github.com/estebanlm ) studied Computer Sciences at Universidad de Buenos Aires, and worked since 1994 in several object-oriented and low-level technologies, in different software companies, serving in various positions from programmer to senior architect. In 2007 he co-founded Smallworks to offer Pharo-based agile development projects. Since 2012 he dedicated full time to developing the Pharo code and community. He works with the INRIA-EVREF team in Lille, France, as core developer for Pharo, being responsible with the coordination of new releases and the implementation and maintenance of several Pharo libraries. That wasnât the intent, but we sometimes find that students are asking you to do their homework and rather than a directly answering, itâs more instructive to try and help them reason on the code - particularly as Smalltalk is a language where you can reason on the code. Anyway, I hope the concept of how a BlockClosure works has got you hooked (it was the light bulb moment for me, many years ago - and I still marvel at it today - itâs so elegant).
