Try this: (PDFDocument new compression: false)add: (PDFPage new add: (PDFTextElement new text: 'Hello'; from: 10mm@10mm)); exportTo: 'test.pdf' asFileReference writeStream. Compression causes your string to be gzipâd which is a ByteArray and not a String of any kind. Unfortunately, the write stream is a ZnCharacterWriteStream which is expecting some kind of String. So the method is expecting some kind of string, but it received a ByteArray, which is NOT any kind of string. What's in the ByteArray? Where did it come from? Why isn't it a string? Hi, all. I am working on creating a PDF with Artefact (https://github.com/pharo-contributions/Artefact) and am having an issue running the first example. the Example looks like: PDFDocument new add: (PDFPage new add: (PDFTextElement new text: 'Hello'; from: 10mm@10mm)); exportTo: 'test.pdf' asFileReference writeStream. When running this, I get the error: Instance of ByteArray did not understand #isByteString indeed, ByteArray does not have a method called isByteString. I have tried creating a method that returns either true or false (I tried them both), but I have not successfully built the PDF. The method calling isByteString looks like: ZnUTF8Encoder next: count putAll: string startingAt: offset toStream: stream "Write count characters from string starting at offset to stream." Hi, Besides the links James has sent, there's also https://github.com/ba-st/Docker-GemStone-64/ . It's still a bit in flux because we're not running production code in it yet, but we're using it in our projects for CI ( https://github.com/ba-st-actions/gs64-ci ) and the projects in https://github.com/ba-st are gaining support for GemStone 64 alongside Pharo. Back in the days when an entire department would share something like a VAX and think themselves lucky, the advance was never to let secrets *rest* in your address space any longer than you had to. Bring the secret into memory just the instant before you need it, use it, then scrub that area of memory. You might want to put the credentials on a thumb drive which is plugged in only when needed, I've generally found it better for environment variables to contain file names pointing to configuration files than to have then hold the configuration information directly. Dear Sergio, You are right that passwords and credentials should not be committed to source code. There are several alternatives available. If you are running the code on your own machine, logged as you, then I would just keep the credentials in ~/.ssh as a private key. Another place for the credentials might be something like /var/opt/MYAPP/myPrivateKey. In any case, ensure that you protect the key with 400 or 600 security (this assumes you are using Linux or macOS). I am looking at using Aretfact (https://github.com/pharo-contributions/Artefact/blob/development/docs/Guide…) for PDF generation. Mustache seems like it might be a good fit for text generation. What we did then was to combine Pharo with LaTex via Mustache templates. If I would redo the project today, I would use Typst[2][2a], to decouple PDF creation from the huge LaTeX ecosystem and a nicer syntax with better error messages. In fact, we are using Typst now because of that (but we have not redone the Pharo integration via Mustache templates). Document layout with Pharo

Hi, all. I am looking to create a newspaper like listing of movie showtimes. Initially, I thought of using imagemagickâs annotate command to generate the output. Thinking further, I thought it might be worthwhile to generate a LaTeX file, and render that to a jpg. Then, I thought there might be a better way to do this natively in smalltalk. Does anyone have any idea how I might generate a document that can be converted to an image with a reasonable amount of control of the layout? Thanks!

In the inspector, I select on of the objects, and I try to evaluate âEvent Events remove: selfâ.. But I am getting an error: an Event not found in OrderedCollection. Does anyone have any ideas on how iâd do this? Updating objects in the inspector

Hi, all. I have been away from Pharo/Smalltalk for several years, but I am coming back to it now. I am a senior developer, but havenât used smalltalk in any professional projects. I also found that I donât do ANY pet projects for fun anymore, as the current batch of languages/frameworks are not fun. They are effective and all. But not fun. I am starting a bunch of âscratch my own itchâ projects. Iâll be using Pharo as the data store, and maybe more. The thing I really want to do is document the usage of Pharo in my projects, and explain the toolchain, and why i chose each piece. My first project is to take a list of movie events from the local theater and create a listing reminiscent of the newspaper listings we read in the olden days. I have my models set up and figured out, but I have a really simple question. How do i change the value of an instance variable in the inspector. It looks like it should be super simple, but itâs not working. In this case, I am just trying to take the period out of a string. See that attached image. You can implement another version of TestResult that halts when an error is added instead of recording it, and reimplement classForTestResult in the test cases to return this new class instead. How can I run the debugger at test class level? There is already for example `haltIfTest` that will halt if youâre in the dynamic extent of a test. If youâre dealing with concurrency issues, I donât understand how the `haltIfError` is actually helping you. Just running the test in debug mode is not enough? => it should open a debugger when it finds an error, right? Call for chapters

Welcome to this collaborative book. We are looking for contributions to new tools in the Pharo ecosystem. Here is a non-exhaustive list of possible tools we have in mind. Development tools such as refactoring, memory usage, and new approaches to debugging Development tools such as UI builders Development tools to develop compilers Tools for modeling such as Cormas, Moose Libraries as basis for advanced tools Each chapter will be reviewed by three reviewers. We expect the chapters to describe the tools, present some clear scenarios, describe key elements of implementations, evidence of use of the tools, Submission process: A chapter must be written in Microdown. Writers may want to clone the current repository and use Pillar (see https://github.com/pillar-markup/pillar and https://github.com/pillar-markup/microdown) The Sample1 folder in the Chapters folder contains a sample chapter. The authors should send an email to stephane.ducasse(a)inria.fr <mailto:stephane.ducasse@inria.fr>, goca(a)dmi.uns.ac.rs <mailto:goca@dmi.uns.ac.rs>, and juanpablo.sandoval(a)uc.cl <mailto:juanpablo.sandoval@uc.cl>. The authors should then do a PR to this repository with their chapter containing all their files. The length of each chapter is not fixed but authors should make sure that the chapter is not either too short or too long. It is worth to see that the format is good for tutorials but is not compact. We will give feedback on this aspect. As usual the material should be new and unpublished. Citations should be expressed using the microdown citation e.g. {!citation|ref=Blac09a!} using {!citation|ref=Blac09a!}, A chapter must be spellchecked with a system such as grammarly, if needed, each chapter should contain a bibfile having the same name than the main folder file, if needed each chapter should contain a folder named 'figures' that contains the figures of the chapter. The Sample1 folder illustrates this structure, it contains: Sample1.bib Sample1.md figures/pharo.png figures/rmod.png This book will be published via the book-on-demand program of http://bod.fr <http://bod.fr/>. Hi Noury, You are right and reading your answer I understand I wasn't crystal clear. I have a test scenario where sometimes a race condition occurs, so I'm not expecting any error. Which is why I'd prefer something built-in Pharo: a sort of "haltIfError" or "haltOnError" built-in command.Is there anything like that in Pharo?
