UKSTUG Meeting - Pierre Misse-Chanabier: Polyphemus Take 2 - 31 January 2024

Pierre Misse-Chanabier will talk to us about Polyphemus ( https://github.com/hogoww/Polyphemus ) for the Pharo Virtual Machine. The presentation will focus on how to create Tooling on the Pharo Virtual Machine. (This does not require Virtual machine level knowledge). We will start by taking a look at a few existing tools. We will create one or two small tools, and see how they differ from tooling on the image side. Pierre Misse Chanabier is a recently graduated PhD with a focused interest on Virtual Machines, Code Generation, and Meta Programming. He worked on and contributed to many different levels and parts of the Pharo ecosystem. He is now working on how to leverage images for more than what they do now. He's currently working at Microdoc ( https://www.microdoc.com ) on the Graal VM. Born in south of France, he currently lives in Lille. This will be an online meeting from home. This is a repeat of last November's presentation that could not go ahead due to issues with our Zoom account. Books about Pharo

This is a new thread because it's not limited to any specific topic. If you have questions about Pharo, especially "how do I do <this> in Pharo", you can always ask in this mailing list. You can, if you like playing Russian Roulette, ask a Large Language Model "AI". But there is an amazing resource you should really trye. books.pharo.org Did you ever wonder where the manual for Pharo was? That's where. The site lists a bunch of Pharo books and booklets, all of which have free PDFs except for two of the books. In particular, you'll always want the most recent edition of "Pharo by Example" handy. These books are really useful. They are written by people know know their material thoroughly and do a good job of explaining it. If you want to make any serious use of Pharo, or even to have more happiness than headaches just playing with it, you owe it to yourself to get the free PDFs What do we owe the authors? Well, if you're not trying to make one pension support four people, you owe them the purchase of some of the books. Me, I'm giving them thanks, praise, and a heartfelt recommendation. Seriously, these books represent a HUGE amount of work and "you are a fool to yourself and a burden to others" if you don't take advantage of this great resource.

This has not changed since Smalltalk-80. Running Smalltalk-80 and looking in the browser, I see Dictionary>> do: aBlock super do: [:assoc | aBlock value: assoc value]. 'super' here is Set, a Dictionary being implemented as a Set of Associations (which was always a bad idea). Dictionary>>do: has ALWAYS iterated over the elements of a dictionary, NOT the associatons. I have Squeak, Pharo, Smalltalk-80, VisuaWorks, VisualAe, Smalltalk/X, and GNU Smalltalk (plus several others including my own). They all follow the ANSI standard in this respect., The distinction between #do: and #associationsDo: goes back to Smalltalk-80, as does #keysDo:. Wrong. If you want to iterate of the associations of a dictionary, you need #associationsDo:. #do: passes the *values* to the block, *NOT* the associations. There are many books about Smalltalk. Stephane Ducasse has made many of them available as FREE pdfs. Of course Pharo by Example would be a good start. The latest edition of Pharo by Example I have ready to hand is 8.0, 2020, where what you want is chapter 13, Collections. aCollection do: [:element | ...] aKeyedCollection keysAndValuesDo: [:key :element | ...] dictionaries are keyed and so are sequences. You can iterate over the elements of any collection using #do: with a one-argument block. The elements will be passed to the block and the keys will NOT. If you want the keys, must use #keysAndValuesDo: with a two-argument block. The keys and corresponding elements will be passed to the block. You "AI buddy" is a treacherous lying ignorant bastard. Such is the start of AI. 1. Open a browser on Dictionary. 2. Select "enumerating" the the method category panel (top row, third from left). 3. In the method panel (top row, rightmost) you will see do: keysAndValuesDo: keysDo: valuesDo: 4. Selecting them one at a time you will see do: aBlock ^self valuesDo: aBlock keysAndValuesDo: aBlock ^self associationsDo: [:assoc | aBlock value: assoc key value: assoc value] keysDo: aBlock ^self associationsDo:: [:association | aBlock value: associatoin key] valuesDo: aBlock tally = 0 ifTrue: [^self]. 1 to: array size do: [:eachIndex | |eachAssociation| eachAssociation := array at: eachIndex. nil == eachAssociation ifFalse: [ aBlock value: eachAssociation value]]. Now to fully make sense of this, you'd have to understand how a Dictionary is implemented in Pharo. (An Array whose elements are reach either nil or an Association holding a key and a value. This is a traditional Smalltalk implementation of dictionaries, but others except and some are better.) But you CAN see quite easily from this code that #do:, #keysDo:, and #valuesDo: pass just one value to their block argument, while #keysAndValuesDo: passes TWO values. And this is typicalk of trying to glean understanding by looking at the system source code: it is easy, you won't undersand everything, but you'll learn *something*. Yes, I would like to have drag-n-drop support, too. Or more specifically: double click of the image in the Finder opens that image. (I am on the mac) I did use it a lot when it worked, but talking to people it seemed that it was not used a lot bu others. I think the reason was that was quite cumbersome, as it only worked for real if you had just *one* VM associated with the .image extension in the Finder. As soon as you need different vms, this stops to be practical, and the Finder even gets confused which vm to use and it is a mess. A real solution would be to have the Launcher be in charge and start the image with the correct VM, this is something I have on my endless TODO to look at to see how hard this would be to support. Thanks both Sergio and Noury, I'm not a big fan of the pharo launcher, but I'll give it a chance. In the dialects I am familiar with, James' answer is correct. Some dialects implement #keysAndValuesDo: on sequenceable collections, in which case, the keys are the indexes of the values. oh! this makes sense.. let me try this. The trick is, i have used the AI system from JetBrains (in my day job IDE).. and it has figured out a bunch of smalltalk questions i had. Even questions about the pharo ecosystem. It hasnât always been 100%, but it got me to look in the right place quickly. This was the first time it came up with something that looked right (i have seen this pattern everywhere).. but it was not correct.. How to run multiple images?

Hi Guys,I'm on a mac apple silicon with Pharo 10, I've a couple of problems First: it is not possible anymore to drag and drop the image file on the VM (pharo.app), it was very comfortable. Second: If I open the pharo.app and choose an image that becomes the only running image, I can't launch the pharo.app to run another image in parallel Are these 2 issues solvable, please? Any hint? Hi Sergio, I added a Movies demo, using a Soil database. There was a previous Accounting demo that had two versions (in memory database and Soil database) from which I based the new demo. I like the Movie demo because it is simple yet complex enough. I suspect the Accounting demo is too complicated to grasp as a first encounter. Iâm going to use the Movie demo for a presentation, so itâll continue to be tweaked. Mainly, Iâll be adding a way to use SoilTransaction with #commit, instead of #checkpointAndContinue. Sergio, I would go with STON, as advised by Norbert (I don't have experience with Soil). One of the nice things of STON is that you can use whatever DVCS you like to versionate your data. For example, we locally use Fossil, while most people prefer Git. STON is super versatile! As an example, I used it with Grafoscopio, my Pharo powered interactive outliner/documenter, to store notebooks with Markdown stored inside STON, as you can see in [1]. And now I flipped that idea and I'm using STON to embed notebooks metadata inside Markdeep. In this way anyone can read notebooks directly in the web, without specialized software. [1a] is just the same document in [1] but with this flipped format idea (if you,re even more curious, look at the source code of the page at [1a] and youÂ will find that the STON representation of notebook cell/node medatada is pretty light and readable). Hi, Iceberg is indeed to Git Browser. The menu was updated to be more user friendly because Iceberg is a little cryptic for people new to recent versions of Pharo or to Pharo itself. Git is the primary SCM for a few years now. In Pharo 12 most of the UI of Monticello is been removed because it is hard to maintain two SCM like this in Pharo. Pharo on Raspberry Pi in 2024

With the new Raspberry Pi 5 (8Gb) I finally got hold of, and the new Raspberry OS (Bookworm 12), I thought it was time to try Pharo again (see Pharo issue #11841 by @astares). I used zero-config with version specification, like 'get.pharo.org/100+vm'. (On pharo.org there are no OBS packages for Bookworm). Using Raspberry Imager I put 64-bits Bookworm on the Pi5. The installs for Pharo 9, 10 and 11 worked OK. Pharo12 does not work because files.pharo.org/get-files/120 does not contain an aarch64-vm. The P12 image does work with the VM downloaded for P11. UI performance is excellent. Next I tried 32-bits Bookworm (Raspberry OS 12) on the Pi5. As there are no recent 32-bits Pharo images (issue #12769) I only tried P9 and P10. Directly using zero-config loads 64-bit Pharo and even explicitly specifying 32-bit (through 'get.pharo.org/32/90+vm') results in a 64-bit download. The reason is, that the Pi loads a 64-bit kernel even when the OS itself is 32-bits. This means the command 'uname -m' that is used by zero-config, returns 'aarch64' instead of 'armv7l'. I will report this on the zero config repo. So I downloaded and unzipped manually.. Pharo 9 works fine. The Pharo 10 image misses Playground in the menu, but ctrl+O+W works. On a Pi 4 (8Gb RAM) with 64-bits Bookworm Pharo 10 is OK. Pharo 11 (with VM 10.0.5 2023-05-05) gives an error: '[ERROR] 2024-01-16 21:37:55.000 sqAllocateMemory (src/memoryUnix.c:160):I cannot find a good memory address starting from: 0x10000000000'. With 32-bits Bookworms it behaves the same as the Pi (i.e. it also loads a 64 bits kernel) Next I tried the same on a Raspberry Pi 3B+ (1Gb memory). For 64-bits the Raspberry Imager default to the Bullseye version (11) . Pharo 10 and 11 complain about a wrong libc.so version and don't work. Using Bookworm ( 64-bit) Pharo 10 runs OK . Pharo 11 does not work, with the same error as on the Pi4 Last I tried the Raspberry Pi Zero 2W (512 Mb RAM, but only â¬20!). First 32-bits Bookworm. Pharo9 works. Pharo10 also with the incomplete latest image. 64-bits Bookworm seems a bit heavy for this board, but it works. Pharo10 runs, more or less. Maybe headless would be quite useful. Pharo11 gives the same memory allocation error as on the Pi 4 and 3B+ Summary: - On the Pi 5 all Pharo 64 bits versions work - On other Pi's only version 9 and 10 work. Pharo11 has a memory allocation error. - Recent 32-bits Pharo images are lacking; especially for the cheap Pi Zero I would really like to see whether 32-bits is more usable.

The idea is, I have been a software engineer for the past three decades. I REALLY love my profession (even though now, itâs pretty much sitting in meetings all day), but I love it. I have a few projects I always wanted to do, because I just want to do them because they are useful to me. I have architected and coded hundreds of giant projects. At this point, building anything with the big web frameworks just seems exhausting. I have decided to bring each of these pet projects to fruition and then document how and why i made each decision. Every project will be using smalltalk as the data store. If the project is a website, I will use seaside as the web framework. Otherwise, Iâll use the teapot as an API interface. The series of articles I will write will be aimed at people in my position. People who are familiar with software development, and would like to read about it at a higher than tutorial level. In the end, Iâll end up with: - an application of some sort that scratches my own itch - a pile of articles outlining how i designed the tool set for the application. and in reality, itâs gonna be thinly veiled Smalltalk evangelism. Can you sketch out the complexity aspects of your five projects? Is this all for learning, or are they âproductionâ applications? Do you want to gain experience with different ways to persist data, or are you just thinking that you have to use different ways due to project complexity? It might be that Soil database could handle all your use cases, so you could avoid working through a bunch of databases, unless you want to. OOH.. I like this idea. Iâll do a quick test on this and see if it works as expected.. For now, I want to store the data in the image. The trick is, I like to start with a fresh image every few days. The model object you can use with STON or fuel to store it and on reading back you store each of the values back on the class side variable. Simple and nice. I would use STON for that because it is equivalent to fuel but fuel has migration problems. Or better you need to load all your data, update fuel to a newer version and write it again with the new fuel version. STON is more reliable in that regard. Voyage is good for some use cases but you have to deal with mongoDB (not sure the small libraries work right now) You could also consider using soil (https://github.com/ApptiveGrid/Soil) I might be a bit biased here :) but for most use cases this is the best of all the worlds described aboved. Sergio, If you are keeping data in a Pharo image then you could just save the image instead of using STON. Alternatively, you could model your data in an Application class with three instance variables: theaters, movies, and events. Then you could dump the root application object and STON should preserve the relationships (I expect). I prefer this model since it allows me to create a test object that encapsulates all the data in one place (even if it is referenced from a class variable). For GemStone, execute `SystemRepository fullBackupGzCompressedTo: aFilePath` (see details at https://downloads.gemtalksystems.com/docs/GemStone64/3.7.x/GS64-SysAdminGui…) This does a full object dump and preserves the relationship between objects. Note that GemStone also creates a transaction log so once a transaction commits, you can restore it in event of a system crash. Sometimes, it makes it makes sense to pull the production data into development. In the case of a catastrophe, itâs super simple to restore data from a backup. I am thinking of the following: STON I could dump all of my data into STON, but there is one slight twist. In this project, itâs just making a list of movie listings. There are three basic classes: Theater, Movie, Event.
