Error in Pharo 9 under Windows 10

Hi, Every time I try to start a Pharo 9 image I get an error. This happens with both 32 and 64 bit versions, under Windows 10. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Pharo Launcher without avail. This has been happening for the last 10 days. I don't know if this is the proper place to post this...if not please let me know. Hello Sven, thank you very much for this thorough explanation! I also think a string literal should be a constant. But since I am new to Smalltalk I am reading a lot of documentation, and in the older documentation modification of a string was shown as an example. In fact this modification is still possible in Pharo 8. But I am all for progress and evolution of Smalltalk for the better and this is how it was meant to be by itâs inventors. Markus, 'hello' is a literal string constant, part of the set of constants of a method (or a doit which like a temporary method disconnected from a class). Constants like these are managed by the compiler and can be shared between different expressions to avoid duplication. Changing such a constant is dangerous because it means you are changing static/compiled code. Consider a method like name ^ 'Markus' I could call this method and change the returned string destructively in place. Next time someone calls it, s/he would get the modified string. Even worse, s/he would not understand since the source code did not change. In the past it was not possible to mark such strings as being constant, now we can. Which is a big win. You can use #copy to get a string that you can modify. Strings in Playground are read only in Pharo 9

Hi all, strings in Playground are read only in Pharo 9.0 Build 1153 so that 'hello' at: 2 put: $a; yourself ctrl+p This throws an error: âModification forbidden: âhelloâ is read-only, hence its field cannot be modified with $a which is actually a very nice error message but is this supposed to happen? The example does work in Pharo 8 without problems. Greetings Markus

I have been struggling all afternoon trying to install Pharo 9.0 on my M1 Mac. I have finally got everything loaded - 9.0 + Seaside, IniFile and STON. However, I am having some difficulty getting my software to run correctly. Firstly, when I try and import the STON objects from file I get an error which ~I didnât get with 8.0. I am sure that I could sort this if I could do any debugging. However, when I switch to the debugger from Safari, I get the following error: Instance of Process did not understand #debug:title:full: Because of this the debugger doesnât open so I can get no further. Can anyone assist please? David

As Sven said it is done using categories. In practice I often use the small âextensionâ button in the lower right corner of the method editor of the browser. A question about packaging

Hi everyone. I have been using Pharo sine I got my M1 MacBookAir in late December. Before then, I was a VAST user since around 1995. I have a question about packaging. Example, in VAST, I have an Application called Family_Accounts. Inside that I have some classes such as FAEntry, FABudget and so on. If I wanted to extend String to add an instance to convert to ScaledDecimal but using my special amount strings. I select the New menu item and then select either a class or an extension. As I want to extend String, I select Extension and then, within my Family_Accounts, I can see the String class so that I can extend it. In Pharo, I can have a package called Family_Accounts. I can extend String, OK but my extension stays within the original package with, optionally, a Family_Accounts classification. I canât see how to add String to the Family_Accounts package to keep everything together in one place. Can this be done? David

Sorry, I meant to be factual not critical. I am very pleased with Pharo and, now that I can see how it works, I am getting on really well with it. I understand about resources as I have worked on my own for 20 years and have no-one to assist me. Never mind, Smalltalk is such a great language. Please let me see the new VM and I will run some tests against it. I am impressed with performance as it is so a native VM should be fantastic. Esteban, Pablo and Guillermo are talented engineers. And so far the consortium is able to pay one and half engineer and Inria is supporting the rest. Pharo is not like we would like it to be. Pharo is as we can make it with the limited resources we have. And so far I think that we are doing super good. You see like the first ARM64 bits based JIT and the first VM for M1 machine. BTW for the new mac machines, we can give you access to a VM that is going faster than the Rosetta one. Ah, I overlooked that as well ;-) This could happen by STON input as follows { ... } : null with everything after the closing } being junk from a previous file that you overwrote with shorter contents. I attach a couple of screen shots and a file containing the item that I am trying to open. What else can I supply? This has been working for a couple of weeks and suddenly doesnât work. I save the JSON and then load it back again. I enclose a file with the JSON as contents. Problem with Dictionary and Associations

I am using STON to objects out to disk. Up to two days ago, I was reading them in as Dictionaries and converting to objects from there. All of a sudden yesterday morning, I got an error saying that the association is only indexable with integers. Even so, I don't seem to be able to access the contents. Hack to show timestamp and author on versions of methods

Hi Guys In my opinion it is really uncomfortable working without the timestamp of a specific version of a method, I read the explanation of Esteban in the previous thread (http://forum.world.st/pharo-8-method-versions-how-to-see-author-timestamp-t…) but probably it will take some time before to see a new VersionBrowser and the history based on git is not really a solution to me. So it took a day of debugging but I discovered the flow of "versions" in Pharo 8 and I added the logic of the timestamp and the author of a method. Basically I created a subclass of MessageList I named it VersionMessageList, in this way the original MessageList is preserved for other goals I can safely ignore. Now 1) You can file-in VersionMessageList.st (see below) and 2) You have to change VersionBrowser >> initializePresenters using VersionMessageList this way: VersionBrowser >> initializePresenters messageList := self instantiate: VersionMessageList . .... Magritte+Seaside 3.4.4+Pharo issues

Hi I am posting these here (rather in desperation) as I seem to be stuck very erratically in Magritte. Magritte appeared to me the next best thing after sliced bread but somehow i just cant get it to toast. trying the simplest of the example - exercise 1 - from the booklet "Meta Data at work with Magritte" - item 4.3 - which is a form rendering CMPerson from the code example library Magritte-ContactManager - i now get errors / walkbacks in the Classes. Yet it seemed working earlier.
