In many Smalltalk implementations, you have *.sources and *.changes files to go along with the image file. There may be a problem with these files in your installation. Missing, not readable, corrupted, ... who knows what. In my Windows environment, the Launcher has put my images in C:\Users\myuserid\Documents\Pharo\images\. For example, I have a Pharo 9.0 - 64bit (stable) directory there with a number of files, including my *.image, *. sources, and *.changes files for that "project". Curiously, the image and changes files have the same basename, which matches the directory. Short report on webview porting: - on Windows (Edge, Edge/Chrome) it works single threaded, it is more or less done, needs some rigorous stability testing, - on Linux/Ubuntu (gtk3, webkit2gtk) almost done, it works as a separate TFWorker thread, still needs some process status checking if webview window is closed by user. - on MacOS (Cocoa, WebKit) I got hold of an older Mac (Sierra) where WebKit doesn't support clipboard operations, but I have made a dynamic library without clipboard support just to continue the development. If anyone is curious, for compilation you need gcc (available here: https://github.com/kennethreitz/osx-gcc-installer) Then get webview.h and webview.cc from https://github.com/webview/webview and compile it with: c++ -dynamiclib webview.cc -std=c++11 -framework WebKit -o libwebview.dylib After some more tests on Windows and Linux I'll pack all the libs on GitHub and update the readme. Pharo9: Lessons in "Learn Pharo" are now black and unreadable

Ubuntu 20.04.3 Pharo-9.0.0+build.1573 I am a noob just getting started with Pharo. After tuning some System preferences (e.g. switching to Pharo Light theme, etc.) the lessons in âLearn Pharoâ available from the âWelcomeâ window are near black and unreadable. When I click on âLearn Pharoâ the initial page is okay (black or blue type on a black background) but doing â`ProfStef go.`â messages opens the next lesson where all text has such a black background it is unreadable. Doing â`ProfStef next.`â or â`ProfStef previous.`â on subsequent pages opens a new page similarly illegible. Iâve searched through all the System prefs but canât figure out which one affects the lesson pages. Regards, Hedley

Thanks, Stephane. I am aware of this now most comfortable possibility to gain access to the newest image. I want to prepare to be able to offer feedback when making changes while working with it; esp. reporting on glitches, and, possibly, code contributions. As of my understanding, up-to-date local repositories in sync with the image are neccessary to do that. Am I wrong? Gtk3 has a main message loop gtk_main() which, as it is being used in the [webview library](https://github.com/webview/webview) that I chose, blocks Pharo completely while webview window is active. On Windows, the webview window in general works without engaging the main message loop, but windows implementation doesn't rely on Gtk3 but on Edge. On Linux, I firstly tried to put this webview library into a separate thread (a worker with headless image), however in this kind of setup the callbacks from the library cannot reach Pharo main thread. I solved this by exposing two additional Gtk3 functions in webview library, gtk_events_pending() and gtk_main_iteration() which enabled the construction of main event loop in Pharo that I run on the Idle Process priority level so that it doesn't take 100% of the processor time, like this: `proc := [[ true ] ` ` whileTrue: [ ` ` (wv ffiEventsPending = 1) ifTrue: ` ` [wv ffiRunIteration]. ` ` Processor yield.` ` ]] forkAt: Processor lowestPriority.` So I don't need to run the webview library in separate thread, which is a bit simpler, and the callbacks work as they should. Pharo won't start on Ubuntu

Pharo 9 (amd64) Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS (Focal Fossa) I installed Pharo 9 by following the instructions for Xubuntu 20.04 at [OpenSuse Builder](https://bityl.co/ABlH "OpenSuse Builder"). A bit of progress :-) I compiled a shared library libwebview.so on Ubuntu with: `` g++ webview.c -fPIC -shared -o libwebview.so `pkg-config --cflags --libs gtk+-3.0 webkit2gtk-4.0` `` Before that, the gtk and webkit2 dev libraries should be installed with: `sudo apt install -y libwebkit2gtk-4.0-dev libgtk-3-dev` And if you donât have gcc tools: `sudo apt install build-essential` Iâll see if I can figure it out for MacOS too. It appears that in Linux it is necessary to run the webview in separate thread, otherwise Pharo image gets blocked, so I have to slightly change the architecture (with threaded FFI as astares pointed out on Discord #ffi). For our December meeting, Florin Mateoc will show us JsSqueak ( https://github.com/fmateoc/JsSqueak ), a JavaScript implementation of (JavaScript compiled) Squeak. Whereas SqueakJS or TruffleSqueak are implementations of the Squeak stack VM which run the Squeak bytecodes, JsSqueak compiles all the Squeak code to JavaScript (including the VM plugins), it exports the image state as one big JavaScript storeString, and then loads them, and runs the JavaScript implemented minimal VM (mostly primitives) and the JavaScript-translated Squeak methods as one combined JavaScript application. The compiled JavaScript application can be run either in a browser or in Node.js While JavaScript, especially with its newest additions, is a very powerful language, which allows us to implement most Smalltalk-specific features (e.g. processes/green threads are implemented using generator functions and recursive yield* for all invocations, DNU is implemented using proxies and proto manipulation, the Smalltalk parallel class hierarchy is implemented using JavaScript classes with static properties and their parallel prototypes hierarchy, weak classes are implemented using JavaScript WeakRef instances in their (weak) slots), one obvious challenge is implementing contexts. Since we compile Squeak classes to JavaScript classes, Squeak methods to JavaScript methods (and class-side Squeak methods to static JavaScript methods), the code runs on the native JavaScript call stack, and we do not have a mapping between the JavaScript function activations and reified contexts. Nevertheless, it turns out that, by providing specialized implementations for various aspects that are implemented using contexts/stack walking in Squeak, we can actually run almost all Squeak code as-is. If you are coming from a Pascal background, instance variables of an object correspond to fields of a record. They are called instance variables - because they are variables - that belong to INSTANCES of a class (object) as opposed to class variables - which are variables - that belong to the CLASS itself and are thus shared by all instances. Other programming languages use terminology like slots, fields, data members, ... The keyword 'instanceVariableNames:' is used because the string that follows contains the names of the variables, not the variables themselves. One thing to note is that in Smalltalk all instance variables (fields, slots, whatever) are PRIVATE. These are not the names of accessor methods, although there may be accessor methods with the same spelling. Iâm far from being an expert but I think you misunderstood. Are you familiar with the concept of instance variables and having trouble with the syntax or do you need some help on the concept of instance variables ? Assuming you are familiar with the concept, here are some explanation about the syntax: in the Smalltalk example you gave, instance variables donât show up in methods; this example is just the Smalltalk way to declare a class with two instance variables var1 and var2 (no method is declared here). The Pascal example would translate to: ``` TTelevision subclass: #Television instanceVariableNames: 'Brightness Temperature' classVariableNames: '' package: 'MyTest' ``` Methods like Focus are declared in a separate way. I am too busy to cobtibute at the moment, but I too am very interested in an emacs interface to the vm/image wuthout any gui but emacs. Iirc there is a protocol fir talking/debugging that I used fir coding and debugging in php that is an established protocol that is available in the micorsoft dev environment.
