UK Smalltalk User Group Meeting - Wednesday, July 29th

The next meeting of the UK Smalltalk User Group will be on Wednesday, July 29th. Peter Svensson will present his work on Cloudsdk-st. Cloudsdk-st (https://github.com/psvensson/cloudsdk-st) is an experiment in ways to work with cloud deployment from a Smalltalk image. Traditionally cloud deployments run 'out of band' in separate build scripts or build/CI/CD systems. This project lets you define Docker images (using Dockerfiles) for Smalltalk, send them to the build system of a cloud provider directly and then choose what kind of service you want your image to be (cloud function or long-running VM). Currently it only supports Google Cloud and has a very rough UI. Future plans include support for AWS and Azure as well as better feedback and a Spec2 UI. Some guy named David Ferrell just donated CAN$6,775 to GoFundMe!!! He must be one f*cking BIG Smalltalk/Pharo fan! Along with GemTalk System's CAN$1,311 and a few other donors, I am more than 58% of the way to reaching my funding goal! This is a huge vote of confidence for JRMPC and my management of it. Please consider donating. Now, I realize some of you may be thinking, "Why should I donate to a */Canadian/* Pharo programming competition?" But the point is, this competition shows the world that Smalltalk has "legs." It doesn't matter what nationality it is. Canada just happens to be a convenient lightning rod. (Which is also why Camp Smalltalk Supreme will be held in Toronto, Canada in 2022.) What other "non-mainstream" programming language enjoys this kind of attention and support? Surely not Ceylon, Clojure, Crystal, Erlang/Elixir, F#, Haskell, Haxe, Julia, Kotlin, Lua, Nim, OCaml, and Racket. None of these languages are used in any national programming competition. Let's show some solidarity. UFFI asynchronous callbacks

I use Pharo 8(64bit) UFFI to call a dll(64bit). Over the dll I have access to 1 or more hardware devices. The dll has a function where I can register a call-back function. The callback is invoked whenever a hardware is connected or disconnected from PC. At the moment, Pharo always crashes when the callback is executed by the dll. Before I waste my time trying to find the bug. I wanted to ask firstâ¦ Is Pharo supporting asynchronous callbacks? Hi Pierce, I'm loading the stuff in the self Gitea repositories from local copies and in the order I know they are needed. So in a sense I following a similar behavior as yours (but I will use the `tonel:///` trick now when needed, thanks for it). My problem is with sharing my baseline with others to ease their installation of the packages I develop, without using Git oligopolistic providers (GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket), but instead self hosted community Gitea instances. >From this thread, I imagine that the path to follow is to extend the Metacello Git providers to include Gitea instances. I will see how the current ones are implemented and what can I contribute using them as a template for new providers and see how to contribute this back to Pharo as a Metacello "plugin". I will share advances and questions here.
