Hi Roelof, I probably missed your prior posts but I do have a few questions and/or comments for you before I can be of any help! This code is for tournaments of what sport exactly?Â Hockey teams?Â Baseball teams?Â Or tournaments between players (such as in chess where the concept of Team exists only every 4 years for the chess Olympiads).Â Do you plan on handling different sports? Different tournament formats (round robin, ladder, etc). The whole thing seems to be centered around games/match results but you don't have such a class in your example.Â Besides, how do you handle different results for one team for the same tournament a few years apart (say, the 2017 Formula 1 season vs the 2018 Formula 1 season) ?Â Shouldn't tournaments also have a name and a year (or a Season object) like they have in tennis, golf, chess, hockey, baseball, etc? So my first impression is that you need the following classes : Team, GameResult, Tournament and something like TournamendDirector to create tournaments and create matches (or read/write them). In other words, we need more info on what you are trying to do! Four blindingly obvious remarks. (1) Where are the comments? What problem is this actually solving? Where is the specification? Oh, it's at the *end*, not actually in the Team class. (2) name: anObject name := anObject and way too many methods like it. (a) Saying "anObject" is maximally unhelpful. It's even worse than "s" because that might be a clue that it is a string or symbol. You might want to read the (now free) book "Smalltalk with Style". (b) I dislike "setter" methods that let anyone poke absolutely anything into your object. For example, supposing that name should be a string -- which is the kind of information that should go in a class comment -- I tend to write methods like this as name: aString name := aString asString. which either puts a string into name or dies trying. In fact, I would have an instance cra (3) When I saw "matchplayed matchtied matchlost" I initially expected them to be Boolean. It would really help if you had a class comment saying what they are (and what they mean) and/or an 'initialize' method that sets them to 0. Furthermore, these things are counts, so in English would have to be matchesPlayed, matchesTied, matchesWon, matchesLost. But even that is misleading; you might think they were containers holding Match objects. So I would suggest winCount lossCount tieCount and totalCount ^winCount + lossCount + tieCount making it *impossible* for totalCount to disagree with the others. (4) Code like aTeam matchwon: aTeam matchwon + 1. aTeam points: aTeam points + 3. really doesn't treat aTeam like an object. We note that there are 3 points for a win 1 point for a tie 0 points for a loss and realise that we can do totalPoints ^winCount * 3 + tieCount gotWin winCount := winCount + 1. and now we have aTeam gotWin. The rule here is "if you want an object to change state, ASK THE OBJECT TO DO IT." It's using the Point Of Sale (cash register) problem which is complex yet familiar enough for most people to grasp (no pun intended, GRASP are the patterns he pushes as underlying responsibility-driven principles). Otherwise, Cay Horstmann's 3rd edition of OO Design and Patterns (Java, but applies to any OO language) should be out soon (I provided feedback on a draft copy last year). It has some good coverage of OO qualities and also uses a realistic problem (Graphics Editing framework, Violet) as the basis of lots of examples.

What oo/modelling books/articles do we recommend these days?

As I see Exercism students grapple with more realistic problems which are less algorithmic and more potentially OO (in this case - https://github.com/exercism/pharo-smalltalk/blob/master/dev/src/Exercism/To… <https://github.com/exercism/pharo-smalltalk/blob/master/dev/src/Exercism/To…> ), I am wondering what we point people towards to learn about OO, identifying objects and more importantly responsibilities these days? There is the early Beck CRC paper - but looking at it again, I wonder if its a bit cursory for people who missed the whole OO discovery years ago, and are now faced with competing advice on how to write good programs (much of which seems to eschew OO these days - rather unfairly I think). Any good references come to mind? As Iâll build up a list that I can point people to, that hopefully puts them in a better place to solve these more interesting and hopefully rewarding problems. Well it didn't take long to find a potential problem in what I wrote, at least as a general solution. If the input string contains something which has already been percent encoded, it will re-encode the percent signs. In this case, decoding will recover the once-encoded version, but we need to decode twice to recover the original text. Any web site receiving this version will almost certainly decode once only, and so will not see the right details. I am not sure if this is possible - could there be some sort of escaped slash within a segment? Anyway, if the received url strings are well-behaved, apart from the diacritics, this approach could be used as a hack for Sean's problem. Strictly speaking, such URLs are incorrect and can't be parsed. I do understand that sometimes these URLs occur in the wild, but again, strictly speaking they are in error. The fact that browser search boxes accept them is a service on top of the strict URL syntax, I am not 100% sure how they do it, but it probably involves a lot of heuristics and trial and error. The parser of ZnUrl is just 3 to 4 methods.
