Strategy for investigating test failures

Hello all I would be grateful for hints on strategy in investigating test failures on upgrade. It is an area in which I have no experience; I can see some brute force approaches, but I suspect there are cleverer ways to do it. I have OmniBase working successfully on Moose Suite 6.1 (Pharo 6.0, Latest update: #60541, 32-bit) on Windows 10. All the tests are green, and everything I have tried for my own data works well. To get a bit nearer to the state of the art, I tried to load OmniBase into a new 32-bit Pharo 7 image, created via Pharo Launcher a few days ago. I now have all tests green except one - named 'testBTreeKeyLocking'. Since I am working in single-user mode, I do not expect to need key locking, so I could go on without worrying about it. But I am left with a nagging worry, and I would like to find out what is wrong. The test method has altogether 8 assert/deny statements, so I do not know where to start. 1. Is there any obvious reason why the upgrade should make working code fail? Does P7 have a different compiler? If so, can I switch to an older compiler and see if it is that? (On P6 andP7, the code mentor complains that it should use 'assert:equals:' rather than 'assert:' and = , but that is true in all the other test methods.) 2. Is there any easy way in the test framework to work out which assert/deny has failed? 3. I could insert 'self halt' all over the place and use the debugger, or run the method in debug mode; would this be an approved way of doing it? The test suite creates and manipulates tiny databases; I am not sure whether there might be timing issues in stepping through the code. Any help or suggestions gratefully received. Peter Kenny

I have wrapped libhoedown, a Markdown to HTML library. libhoedown uses callbacks to invoke its renderer and I started constructing a Markdown to Pillar (string, not object tree) renderer by having libhoedown call back into Pharo. Pierce I do understand you not wanting to write your own parser, it is a pest! However, I want a simple distribution model with no external dependencies. At the moment I have a working github-markdown parser (written in Pharo) which recognises: Blocks: headers, paragraphs, ordered and unorderd (nested) lists, block, code-blocs. Inline: bold, italics, overstrike, inline-code. I want links and images before releasing it as version 1. It is restrictive and is a bit peculiar regarding indentation and a few other things. â Kasper

I wouldnât recommend Mongo for this use because it doesnât automagically resolve cycles, so you would have to do a lot of work in order to serialize the data. I agree with the previous suggestions and use Fuel or STON. Thanks Sean and Sven I'm going to investigate Ston and Fuel to do it. I also thought about passing the data to CouchDB (document database) and then accessing from a clean Pharo 7 with Seaside and Bootstrap. How do you think the status of the drivers for Pharo for CouchDB is currently. I used it for an application for production. Also Mongo but he changed his license. I suspect it's the cause of the problems #1 and #2 (FFI), but it's hard to know as I don't have Windows 8.1. But as you have seen, some things are working, so some learning might be possible. A possible solution for you could be to run Linux in a VM on your Windows 8 machine and use Pharo for Linux. The Pharo Launcher and other things work in a similar way under Linux, although installing linux is a big distraction from your goal to learn Pharo and programming (which often happens in information technology). - The use of non-ascii characters in the path (in Windows) has been a source of bugs (e.g., https://github.com/pharo-project/pharo-launcher/issues/333 but it's not only in Pharo).
