Re: [Pharo-users] Personal Programming onPharo

by Norbert Hartl

Can you elaborate on what you consider as a kernel? There are always things moving in the pharo world. The last years the virtual machine got some iterations and it is still not fully stable. For pharo it is hard to have it stable because we feel the need that a lot of the existing parts need to be replaced to be useful in these times. Furthermore pharo is also prototyping platform for programming language features. All of these are counter-stability measures. So if you need a stable kernel from native ground up to UI pharo wonât be that thing you are looking for the coming years (if at all). You always need to adopt to change so you need to define your required scope better in order to get an estimate. How to LAN feature

by Hilaire

Hi, I am looking for advices on a feature I want to develop for Dr. Geo. The need takes place in a LAN, for example in a School computer lab. A teacher and students each run their own instance of Dr. Geo. I want the teacher to be able to share with her students some sketches. Then the students, from their Dr. Geo running instance, can browse and open the sketches shared by the teacher. The user scenario will be like this: - Teacher copies the sketches she wants to share with her students in her DrGeo.app/myShare folder. Then she activates the Dr. Geo share service (from the setting browser for example). - Students start their own instances of Dr. Geo. It automatically scans (in the background preferably) the LAN for any available LAN shares. When a student goes to File>open she can also browse and open the discovered shares. - Ideally students could also save their work on the teacher share. The constraints:Â there is no such things as fixed IP. So the scan is over a subnetwork range. Any advices, reference reading, traps to avoid? Thanks Hilaire -- Dr. Geo http://drgeo.eu

Commit request on PBKDF2

by Martin Dias

Hello Udo and PBKDF2 users, Thanks for the PBKDF2 [1] project; it's been useful in the mongotalk project [2]. Now, I write you with a small change proposal due to some problems I have because of name conflicts with classes at Cryptography package [3] (which ConfigurationOfPBKDF2 declares as a dependency). I analyzed what are the concrete dependencies in PBKDF2 to Cryptography: - Core uses SHA1, which is in Pharo at least since Pharo 4.0 - Tests use the ByteArray>>fromHexString: method extension, which could be copied. (BTW also thanks to Christophe Demarey and collaborators for the Dependencies Analyzer, it's very useful!) Then (unless I'm missing something), PBKDF2 doesn't really need Cryptography as dependency. I can commit the changes if you agree (I see the repository is public). It works locally. Regards, MartÃn [1] http://smalltalkhub.com/#!/~UdoSchneider/PBKDF2 [2] https://github.com/pharo-nosql/mongotalk [3] http://smalltalkhub.com/#!/~Cryptography/Cryptography/

Hi Siemen, You may want to check the pipe support code in OSSubprocess [1]. Note that the pipes should work outside of OSSubprocess. reading from a named pipe in Pharo

by Siemen Baader

Hi, I'd like to use an external tool to edit HTML code and then store and version it in my Pharo image. I'd like to create a named pipe that the external application will save to, and then have Pharo watch for whenever the named pipe is written to and then execute code to handle the data from there. But I can't find any place to register a callback on FileReference and similar classes that will notify Pharo when the named pipe is changed, and when the external editor will read from it. Is there any support for this? I know there are workarounds like polling or reading the file when it is used, but I'd prefer to wire things together directly and avoid duplicating the data if possible. thanks, Siemen

My proposal included a method comment, which would provide the google-able term, as well as potentially a good enough summary that one wouldn't have to leave the image. The fact that the method belongs to CompiledMethod is the disambiguation. The internet is meaningless and flat compared to the context and structure of a ST image. Richard Sargent wrote > Do not use comments embedded *inside* methods to cover for naming the > method badly⦠Also, if one Googles an acronym How is a harder-to-type thing that the user doesn't understand but is easier to google better than a comment that gives the necessary context right in the image? My ideal image would avoid the need to Google as much as possible, suggesting a comment either way, so nothing lost. There's nothing inherently "bad" about an acronym. For example, no one's been banging down the door to rename "JPEGReadWriter" to "JointPhotographicExpertsGroupReadWriter". In that case, it's because the acronym is so well-known, but what I'm asking whether #ast is a similar candidate for exception because it is so unknown (i.e. compiler domain-specific) that a user is likely to know either the term and the acronym or neither. ----- Cheers, Sean -- Sent from: http://forum.world.st/Pharo-Smalltalk-Users-f1310670.html

This is to make the difference between the parse tree (or concrete syntax tree) and the transformation of that parse tree into an abstract syntax tree (where a bunch of syntax tree nodes created by the parsing are removed or made absent... they are not needed to represent the code structure). Hence the abstract: the abstract syntax tree is an abstraction of the parse tree, even if it represent an exhaustive view of a concrete piece of code. https://web.stanford.edu/class/archive/cs/cs143/cs143.1128/lectures/02/Slid…, slide 159 onward. > That, to me, is as opaque as > the acronym for one not acquainted with the domain, and may > buy us little at > the cost of a good amount of extra typing.
