Your using an object-oriented language, why not use an object /domain model/? Consider that Kristen Nygaard stated that an object-oriented "program execution is regarded as a physical model, simulating the behavior of either a real or imaginary part of the world." By physical model, he really is meaning a "direct model" where you /directly /represent the concepts of your problem domain as objects that interact with each other. Sure, you could use a state machine, but why build a model (your domain problem) on top of a model (a state machine) using a paradigm intended to support a different way. State machines are a favored way to model process and state in functional programming. A domain model would separate the user interaction from your domain problem itself. You would model an Order that knows a User and one or more Images. That VM is (was) a 6.0 alpha. The sources file I downloaded is PharoV60.sources. So I finally did curl get.pharo.org/64/stable | bash and curl get.pharo.org/64/vmT60 | bash and got a usable system. IMO it depends on how the API works. Most REST APIs are stateless and the authentication token or api key is sent in each request, there is no login/logout operation. In this case you can setup a before filter and check the authentication token in the filter. If you use normal form based login then using http sessions is the way to go. You can check the session attribute in a before filter similarly, and redirect the user to the login page if there is no session info. Teapot on before: '/secure/*' -> [:req | req session attributeAt: #user ifAbsent: [req abort: (TeaResponse redirect location: '/loginpage')]]; GET: '/loginpage' -> ...show login form... GET: '/secure' -> 'protected'; start. You should clean the session when the user logs out manually. PharoCloud drops VM hosting and focuses on Ephemeric Cloud

Teapot: Managing authentication by a third party (Fossil)

Hi, I'm trying to make some test on a distributed wiki provided by Fossil as a backend for storage/auth, Mustache + Material Design Lite for the frontend and Teapot using as middleware for logic and connecting frontend and backend. Teapot is connected with Fossil via JSON and domain objects are stored as Fossil wiki pages. So far the experiment is going well, but now I'm wondering about how to make authentication. In my experiments I use the Fossil user and password to get an auth token that is used via the Fossil's JSON API to make all the operations that require permissions on the repository and now I wonder how this strategy should be implemented for "real" (for the tests, I read the password data from a local temporal file). - There is some User Management Framework or project for Teapot or Zinc, without going to more complex frameworks like Seaside or Aida? - Should I have some "Sessions" object that stores logged users, passwords and/or auth tokens inside the image and deletes them once the user have logoff and/or on a time basis? - Any other strategy or lite user auth framework that I have not thought ? Any advice or experience in dealing with similar scenario is greatly appreciated. Cheers, Offray

Imagine the complexity of connecting N elements. If you have just tree objects/classes/systems... you need just two connections, but you if double the number of elements, you need more than seven times more connections (to form a complete graph). Of course in practice that number will be smaller, but certainly more than linear to the number of elements. So what works in small scale doesn't necessarily translate to bigger scale, not to mention that brand new concerns are probably going to arise... just like when you are constructing a taller building, you cannot just slap it twice on each other, because the foundations will collapse, and when you want to build a space elevator, you need technology that hasn't been invented yet.

Hi Sven, I was making a silly mistake in the server URL. I just forgot the extra "/" after servers port number, so it was "8081/json" instead of "8081json". I imagine that maybe is a test for validating properly form urls, but also I will have a more trained eye for such errors next time. Now is working properly. The code at [1], shows the fix and includes the ZnEasy convenience. Hi Marc, It would be so cool but no, it's not planned. Like SDL and Morphic, Gtk is only used as a backend for windowing. This means that only primitives related to windowing are currently implemented (i.e GtkWindow related apis). Working on widget binding with Gtk or Qt is something i would like to start, maybe next year but it is quite hard/long to do well. The Mars framework built by Esteban was a really good starting point but it is not maintained. You have to decide in each case whether an object is an internal (implementation detail) and therefore it must be created from inside the class that uses it, or a dependency (or peer) that should be passed as an argument. In the later case you instantiate the object from the outside and hand it over to the object that requires it. Most applications have a few major top level abstractions. Let's call them subsystems. I would use more domain specific names in a concrete case but this is a general example. These subsystems are instantiated at the entry point of the application. If there are shared dependencies between them, those are instantiated here as well. Then each subsystem can build up some object graph that is required by the actual subsystem (Not everything needs to know about everything else. There are clusters of objects that represent domain level abstractions). The same things applies here as well. Some dependencies are passed through (peers), others are instantiated (internals) from the inside. This can go on and on further and it will result a fractal like structure. The whole application is one object. It consists of few other objects. Those object consists of further objects. Also realize the Smalltalk image is a container... No need for fancy XML externalization because you can do that with code. I have an app where I wire all kinds of things together in a configuration file which is Smalltalk code and I just compile a method like "wireEverything" that as source has that configuration file. Or just do a Compiler evaluate: aLongConfigurationStringInSmalltalk Any Dictionary can be a "SpringContext" thing. Now decorators with specific features like transaction support etc is not something we have and things like Spring do have. Hi all, As well described by Peter, Bloc is a low level graphics library which mainly manages multi-windowing (Morphic, SDL, Gtk soon), user interaction (events) and drawing (using Sparta). Brick is a widget framework on top of Bloc (button, inputField, ...) and Spec is a "multi-backend" UI Builder. I know that the installation of Bloc can be confusing because of the multiple possibilities. Hi, The whole âpath randomisationâ feature of macOS is very odd.. what they do is to set an extended attribute to enable tranlocation (copy the whole app to a random path, start it there). This seems to be enabled when you look at a mounted .dmg file *and* when you uncompress a .zip. The flag is removed by the finder when copying to /Applications. When you use a signed .dmg, the flag is turned off. When you start via command line, the flag is ignored. (this is my understanding of the whole mess). But it might be that it depends, too, which which program you uncompress the .zip... you can check from the command line: security translocate-policy-check Pharo.app/ Would not translocate This whole mechanism is only a problem when the applications tries to access files with a non-relative path. No need to move to Application folder for Pharo 6 32 and 64 bit versions

I have latest macos sierra , dowload , opened and saved image for both pharo 6 (32 and 64 bit) and I see no problem doing that from the dowload folder without moving the apps to the Application folder. Am I missing something here ? Because when I dowloaded them there was a warning dialog that said that this would not work.

But I might have done something stupid to the configuration of magritte, especially release3: When I added some features to Magritte, I saw that that the stable version in the configuration of Magritte3 was unstable for pharo2, 3 and 4 for quite some time. Basically the tests failed, because some changes were made for pharo 5 in order to let Magritte version 3.5 run. Since I did not have time to make a proper fix (and the error was there for quite a lot of builds) for the older pharo versions and I believe the tests for the stable version ought to be green, I thought the best way to fix it, was to changed the #release3 magritte version back to release 3.2 for the older pharo versions. Perhaps this is the cause of some of the problems. Tomorrow I have time to look into this problem and make a proper fix. I think the key to this is intention revealing names and comments. And shipping unit tests that are the best example of "running documentation". Take Sven's NeoCSV package as an example. Great documentation and very good method names. and a complete set of tests. Sounds frightening at first if you come from a static typing background, but in my experience it works quite well. There are UML tools. Some even allow round-trips where the UML diagrams can be generated from code (e.g. IBM/Instantiations have the UML Designer add-on), but to be honest, these only put you in high danger of playing with the tool and layout and stuff rather than concentrate on what is important. Hi Marc. In Smalltalk, we rely on naming conventions a lot. The great thing is that Smalltalk selectors/symbols/method names read like English. aDictionary at: aKey put: anObject. aString indexOf: aCharacter startingAt: start ifAbsent: aBlock Seems pretty clear, no? We also rely on comments. For instance this is the class comment for IceRepository - an abstraction of a git repo. I represent an interface to a git repository. My main responsibilities are: - Load/update both baselines and individual packages from the repository. - Commit changes to the local repository and publish them to a remote repository. - Browse other versions of the loaded packages. - Handle branches For the Collaborators Part: State my main collaborators and one line about how I interact with them. Public API and Key Messages - loadPackage: packageName - createBranch: newBranchName Sample usage: Git new origin: 'git@github.com:npasserini/pharo-git-test.git'. git loadPackage: 'Pharo-Git-Test'. Instance Variables - origin: A string representing the url of a remote git repository (used as origin) - repository: An IceGitTreeGitRemoteRepository, which provides underlying git operations. - location: <FileReference> The directory of the local repository. - commitDictionary: <Dictionary of IceCommitInfo> Cached dictonary from commitId (hex string) to all commits in the current branch (in the local repo). - subdirectory: <String> The subdirectory of the local repository which is handled by the underlying GitFileTree - versionDescriptors: <List of GitFileTreePackageEntry> cached list of all package versions saved in the (currently selected branch) of the (local) repository. - announcer: <Announcer> - branch: <IceBranch> currently selected branch. - loadedCode: <IceLoadedCode> Contains information about the loaded code for each package in this repository. About patterns, UML and documentation

Hello, I don't know Smalltalk well enough to give myself an answer about the following topic: When using design patterns, one benefit of writing interfaces and passing objects, that implement this interface, to methods is, that the reader instantly knows: okay, here the method A expects something that implements method B. Due to the nature of being a dynamically typed language, Smalltalk does not need interfaces. An exception object is thrown when a message is passed to an object that does not implement that method. But this message send could be deep inside the code. How do you show to the reader of your code your intention, that you are expecting, let's say for example, an iterator or an object that implements method X, Y and Z? Just with your method comments? Do you use UML? If so, how (without interfaces that point to the required methods)? Sorry, but I think my understanding of OOP is still to much influenced by C++ and Java based teachings... The point of inversion of control is provide the class with what is needed instead of the class creating it on it's own. Sure, you can create class-side helper, however that is very limited, such as the examples/samples as you've demonstrated. To give you an example, imagine that you have a class PeopleService that manages database of people, so it needs a connection to the database. Implemented in a naive way the class would have hard-coded credentials to a MySQL database and it would execute raw SQL queries. This works for a single class, but it creates a mess and mingles concerns; so instead you inverse the control and you provide PeopleService with e.g. a Persistence instance, which is already connected to the database; note however that you cannot just create the Persistence on the class-side, because you wouldn't even know what to instantiate (as you could e.g. use DbPersistence, FilePersistence, ...). And this is just a basic example. Imagine that the PeopleService also needs other services for it's use, and those services need more services, and you want to keep everything separated as much as possible... instantiation by hand will simply not cut it So the service locator/DI configuration (whether as annotations or in a XML file) keeps the actual classes separated from concrete instances; the service depends on abstract interfaces, not specific classes; only the conf determines the specific ones, and more often than not there will be several different configurations _at the same time_. To continue with the example you could have one config production using e.g. OraclePersistence, another for development using MySQLPersistance, another for test server using MemoryPersistence, etc. (also with different credentials, and whatnot). Keep in mind however that relates primarily to using application frameworks, where the framework mandates the control, and the framework is the one calling you, and therefore it will also provide you with necessary parts. After all you are not even creating PeopleService class, the framework instantiates it for you and gives it to another services/classes that needed it. Now I don't feel like there are many application frameworks in Pharo, maybe Seaside has something of this sorts? I guess Spec can be a bit framework-y, as the basic spec widgets do not actually know what Morphic counterparts will be created for them, and Spec looks up the actual class in a hard-coded data table (which might as well be a XML file), but that comes closer to ServiceLocator than DI (as Spec widgets should not actually communicate down to morphic). I've used dependency injection for five years at my previous work and frankly I cannot imagine living without it there, but I've never felt the need for it in Pharo. This is probably more related to working in Pharo on completely different things and writing small libraries. However I wouldn't be surprised if the liveness of Smalltalk/Pharo environment eliminated some of the problems that DI is trying to solve. Hi Steffen, I have created a repo on Github with the code and added you as an admin on it as well. https://github.com/Pharophile/Transducers I've put a README. md with your notes, and under packages/ you'll find 3 packages: Transducers-Core Transducers-Examples Transducers-Tests Tests is empty and Examples has the example from the mailing list. I ran the Renraku quality assistant tool and there are a few issues in the package. I did all of this in a Pharo 6 image using Iceberg. MD5 is broken (Cryptography)

At first, I was not able to reproduce the error, but then I realised that you probably don't save the content of lower left and right parts (`@.Statements).Use cmd+s to save changes. The error is raised because parser tries to parse the old code (same as in upper left part) with a method intended for rewrite rules. That should fix it. Now I would like to send some messages to store serialized STON domain objects as Fossil wiki pages. The command that makes this, using curl, is: curl -H "Content-Type: application/json" -d '{"authToken": "mytoken", "payload": {"name": "foo", "content": "bar"}}' http://localhost:8081/json/wiki/create and I thought that a similar command would be the one at [2], but there is something about ZnEntity that I'm not understanding. Need help for collecting tests usage data

Hi everyone. I need your help. Iâm working on how pharo developers use the tests. And you are pharo developers. So I developed a plugin and I would like you to download it. You just have to execute this line in a playground Metacello new smalltalkhubUser: 'Pharo' project: 'MetaRepoForPharo60'; configuration: 'TestsUsageAnalyser'; version: #stable; get; load. You will have to do it only one time in one image. Then, if they are update itâll be done automatically and if you create a new image it will be automatically installed. The plugin will collect data on which tests you run. when. and the modifications you'll have done. Normally, it should be completely transparent for the users and the data are anonymous. I managed to do it :) What i did not say is that the subclasses (with new inst var) i want to use are anonymous subclasses. So i subclassed the SlotClassBuilder and i did: - generate an anonymous subclass from the source class - migrate my object - modify the anonymous subclass with new instance variables - rebuild the class with my own SlotClassBuilder It seems to work. I did not try how to migrate back my object to its original class but i think i might have a problem there. Also it seems very slow. Indeed it is a very certain, specific application :) Steven. For instance you have : b := RTMondrian new. b shape rectangle withTextAbove. b nodes:(1 to: 5). b layout grid. b edges connectFrom: [ :e | e + 1 ]. b build. b view then you can click a button to: 1 display/hide the labels above the elements. 2 display/hide some elements (all odd numbers for instance) 3 display/hide connections between elements. I saw a visualisation in the Roassal examples where you can add elements in a dynamic stack grapher. So I presume it is possible to do the same with other types of visus. Any hints? This is the default behavior of adoptInstance: which calls primitiveChangeClassTo: But i specifically want to gain new inst vars, which does not work that way. Hi, i'm trying to migrate an object from a given class A to a subclass of A with new inst vars. Can't get it to work. I have a class and an instance of it, say: Object subclass: #A instanceVariableNames: '' |a| a := A new. A has no instance variables. Now i create a subclass B of A with a new inst var: A subclass: #B instanceVariableNames: 'x' I want to do the following: B adoptInstance: a It does'nt work, for what i understand it is because the format of the classes are different (B has an inst var and A has not). Andreas, What if you subclassed ChangesLog, say with something called NoChangesLog and installed that as its DefaultInstance (as accessed by #default), with an #install class side message. Then override #logChange: and #logSnapshot:andQuit: to do nothing. No need to subscribe to system announcements. To install, you do NoChangesLog install. To get back, you do ChangesLog reset. I think that could/would work (the code in System-Sources was refactored quite well). I would like to repeat here again: don't refer to fixed version numbers of packages out of your control in configurations. Refer to #'release' versions that can be patched by the maintainers of your dependencies. That is only appropriate when having to patch around a problem, and couples your configuration hard to the development schedule of your dependency, making it your responsibility to update your configuration whenever that of your dependency is updated. What is most likely is that there is some overconstrained configuration. Does your ConfigurationOfVoyageMongo or one of the configurations it pulls in refer to different versions of grease or magritte? Another issue can be that there are older configurations already loaded that conflict with the newest ones. Indeed, the ConfigurationOfMongoTalk is broken, refering to a fixed and older version of Grease. ConfigurationOfVoyageMongo should probably be using #'release3' of Magritte, but that doesn't break it. Stephan

Some Metacello issue

Hi, after having made some new releases I have an odd Metacello issue and I am not sure how to debug it. This happens on my legacy Pharo3/Pharo4 images that I still need to support in deployment. It seems to be related to a dependency chain of "app"->VoyageMongo->Magritte3 3.5.0 and somehow version '3.1.1.1' of Magritte3 doing something with Grease #stable and not finding a 'Core' group. Any idea how to debug it or if any configuration changed recently? It also only seems to happen if there are two dependency chains that try to load the same VoyageMongo version. Tabular Data Structures for Data Analysis - Text Data Grooming

Hi Oleks, This is probably out of scope (check with your mentors), but I was curious how text processing and inter-table lookups might fit into you project? Check out the Excel side-story at [1] (starting just above the picture of the red tree) "Everybody thought of Excel as a financial modeling application [...] for creating calculation models with formulas and stuff. ... [but] most people just used Excel to make lists". This is exactly my personal experience. The greatest practical value I've had from Excel is massaging text lists. Some use cases: A. getting a bunch of messy hand typed data that needs cleaning up to be consistent before deriving statistics from it. There is no sense programming the whole workflow since its a highly iterative process to work through issues as you discover them. Issues are on-shot, but you want to apply it to 1000 rows. B. tracking the status of 1000s of drawings as they progress through a workflow. Tagging who is working on each drawing, status and using AutoFilter to print out "Drawings To Go" lists. C. managing a photo shoot for a school ball, recording orders and generating filenames to copy originals to a USB stick to take to the photo lab, such that duplicate orders each have a single file with the filename printed on the back making it easier to sort into envelopes for each order. (This is from last week so I can provide a sample Excel file for it) For a detailed example, sometimes I might need to compare the basenames of the files in two folders: 1. In both folders A & B, from the command line I'd do `ls -l > ls.txt` 2. I'd load both text files into Excel, one per tab, where each line appeared in a single column. 3. I split on spaces to convert single column into multiple columns [2] 4. I'd split off the filename extension. So I'd need to reverse the string to determine the location of the last period and store that in a temporary column. Then two more columns hold the formulas extracting the first and second parts of the split using LEFT() and RIGHT(). 5. Then in next column I'd have a formula using VLOOKUP() [4] to see if a row's basename appears in any row of the other tab. 6. I'd then do conditional formatting highlighting the row green if the VLOOKUP() was found. "Text Data Grooming" would be a popular horizonal application demonstrating Pharo's liveness (indeed Excel can be considered a "live" environment., saving its "image" to a xls file). To make it better, someone has to do it, so feel free to propose some code changes (with discussion of such on pharo-dev list).
