It's basically the same as GET and the others. The request object contains the url encoded form data or whatever was posted. The request object is the same as ZnRequest with a few additional methods. Hi Esteban, Yes, good idea as this protocol is not present in Pharo6, it will ease loading Dr. Geo code. However it looks like there are faulty code in Pharo6 as there are exactly *four* senders to this message (see screenshot), and exactly *zero* in DrGeo code, and *one* in the gettext package which should be fixed too. Does it deserve a bug ticket or do I miss something? Loading Dr. Geo in Pharo6

Hi, When I install DrGeo from its configuration file in Pharo6, I got the following VM error. I guess the addStartUpList protocol is obsolete. One option is to modify Dr. Geo code in Pharo3 to remove startup activation, save in the repo, then load newer code in Pharo6, and get it fixed. Hi, i added the garbage collect and the numbers are better ! There are fluctuations but no more "random-like" variations of the measured values. Copy bitmap to clipboard

Hi, A Dr. Geo user asked me about copying a DrGeo canvas view in the system clipboard, to past it in other tools as a text writer or any other editing tool. I looked in Pharo3 and Pharo6, I found text clipboard operation but it is not clear if there is support for other format? Metacello / Iceberg flags

Hi All, I'm sure I saw a message on this list (maybe pharo-dev) that specified a flag that will cause github repositories loaded through Metacello to be automatically added to Iceberg. My memory is that it was on prior to the Pharo 6 release, and turned off just before the release. I've searched through the mailing list archives, but haven't been able to find it. My approach to bridge these two words was to create Grafoscopio [1], where I can save my scripts and put them inside a broader context/narrative. This environment let's me go from scripting/files to objects / code browser and back and I have found this is useful for non programmers (researchers, hacktivists, journalist), because they can have a notebook for their explorations. from my extremely limited understanding about web dev, Seaside if my memory serves me correctly it integrate JS/ HTML/ CSS . IT has many great features, its mature and well documented. Most likely most existing pharo web dev frameworks do this as well. PharoJS is definitely a very cool idea, but its a big project none the less , so it will take some time for it to get there. Assuming devs contribute to it, the massive difference between "I want" and "I make". vested interest in PharoJS?

Hi all, Is anyone else interested in PharoJS and making it mature for their own commercial mobile and single page web app (and node.js) development? I think it has a huge potential because it brings the browser runtime and many libraries and online services from the JS world to us Smalltalkers while letting us keep our agile development and good CS practices. But it does not yet have the necessary features and documentation to work smoothly. -- Siemen

Hi daniel You can open a SDL2 window now it may break because we do not use it regularly. If you encounter problem let us know because this binding should be one we will use in the future: - we want to handle all the events + all the window via SDL2 so this is central to us. We are interested in what you can do with sfml. Now you can also have a look at Bloc because this is a core of a new library that got 5 years of maturation and now its design is nice and stable. Its not perfect but it will give you access to pretty much any library out there because python is very popular. The library is called Atlas , its available from the Package/Catalog browser and requires that you have installed the library you want to use , python 3 and wrappers for python for that library. Third one may be optional because some library come with python wrappers included. If you need any help , I am here. You can use also Atlas as the basis for supporting other languages all you need is a language that can dynamically execute code (usually dynamic languages like python) and support for sockets (sockets are supported in almost all languages). UFFI is the official way of interfacing with C libraries , but C is difficult to manage , very difficult to debug but gives top performance. If the library is made in C++ UFFI cannot access it immediately the library has to be compiled without name mangling.

Even if the image environment runs on SDL2, I want an SDL2 window I have free reign to draw on. I don't want to destroy the usability of the Pharo workspace when programming an application. If that is still too contentious, then I want SFML instead. The story of GTK+ is what I'm interested in. However, just as with databases, when you build something higher level on top - the question comes up about how much you hide that retrieval mechanism. The GTInspector argument is an interesting one from a pure domain understanding - and possibly armed with the underlying piping you have provided, it is then up to me to layer my understanding of the higher level model on top. The major advantages of using the snap package are: - No need to install all the 32 bit dependencies on a 64 bit system, they're all contained and isolated within the snap package. - Automagically distinguish between 32 bit and 64 bit images and run the appropriate VM (as with the ZeroConf package, the 64 bit VM still needs more testing). To get Pharo up and running on Ubuntu 16.04 or later: # Install Pharo $ sudo snap install --candidate pharo --classic # If your system isn't configured for threaded heartbeat: $ sudo pharo.config # Download the latest Pharo 6 image $ pharo.getimage # Go... $ pharo.ui Pharo.image # or: $ pharo Pharo.image eval 4+3 To get a list of available commands: $ snap info pharo If you're on Debian or Ubuntu 14.04 you'll need to install snapd, see https://snapcraft.io/docs/core/install The VM is the threaded heartbeat, dated 201705310241. Consider that in Java, one can /only /achieve polymorphic behavior across objects by using /interfaces /or /inheritance/. In Smalltalk one can achieve polymorphic behavior across objects just by *having them understand the same message*. The heavy part of saving to disk as a Monticello package is an optional secondary step, but to make you code "permanent" in the image you do need a class to hang it on, and a package to hold that. Doing this only in-Image is quite light and quick to do, and makes it easy to find later. In a System Browser create package "GHBibDeskStuff", class GBibDeskKeywordFixer. Create your method so you can use it from playground like this... GBibDeskKeywordFixer new fixFile. Then to the class side of GBibDeskKeywordFixer also add a method #fixFile like this... GBibDeskKeywordFixer class >> fixFile self new fixFile. so that from playground you can drop the "new" and use it like this... GBibDeskKeywordFixer fixFile Feels like you've added a new command to Pharo? Hi, A Dr. Geo user on Ubuntu 16.04 reported to me instability problem I do not meet on my 12.04 config. It seems related to Cairo or FreeType. I will likely update my system on 16.04 later this summer, but I can't just tweak it as this is the end of the school year with several admin tasks to conduct. A dynamic variable could work too. But domain objects are somewhat hard to do in my view because we are dealing with an API that has tons of options and customizability in its results + people can define their own types and fields. That's why I went for a JiraBuilder thing that has a reference to a Jira instance. That builder is allowing one to make higher level queries for the users (like doing Epics, Stories, links, custom fields resolution, meta data grabbing, prototype creation etc). I didn't want to have an Epic class, a Story class, etc. Because my idea of an Epic may not be your idea, so we may end up with a PluggableEpic etc and it will never end. My take is that it is better to use the vocabulary of the domain in the method names but still work with dynamic structures like dictionaries and some helpers. I am still curious to see those domain objects because I understand that they would ease inspection etc. Maybe we should have a generator for these so that we can regenerate the classes based on the metadata provided by Jira. My question is related to building on top of this - and its a style question. Depends on whether you have a SyntaxErrorNotification or a SemanticError. For SyntaxErrorNotifications, you can wrap in a handler block raising a debugger (and will see at which index in source the error is for). Handling automatically is very kludgey without changes to the way OpalCompiler fetches source, which isn't really easily available to edit and resume from SyntaxErrorNotification handling code outside the scope of a controlling SourceEditor. Use Tools->File Browser to look in play-cache/ or pharo-local/play-cache/ folder. You will find all your playground scripts saved in *.ph files. Note down this name (or rename it to something easy to remember) and make a copy. Pass this file as an argument: $ ./pharo Pharo myscript.st BTW, Playground is just that and a file is for unstructured stream of bytes. You may want to start using System Browser to create classes and methods, tests etc. for code worth preserving. Pharo offers you a lot of services like live debug, cross-refs, tracking changes, packaging etc. It is a lot easier than you think ;-). HTH .. Subbu

Help in thinking about how to save a "program"

Hi all. Iâm new to Pharo and loving it. As I transition from a text-file based mindset, Iâm a little stuck and would appreciate help in how to think about a situation in a Pharonic (Pharo-ish, Pharoc?) way. Iâm crafting a short program to help me process a large text file (specifically: extract, sorting, and regularizing the âkeywordâ fields of a large BibTex file). Especially since I donât really know what Iâm doing, working in a Playground has been a great development environment. Now that the program is complete (under 30 lines, wonderful), I want to be able to save it for future reference (and perhaps for future use). If Iâd written a shell script, Iâd just save âfixBibDeskKeyWords.shâ to a directory. Iâm not sure what to do in the Pharo environment, thought. At the moment, it just lives in the Playground Iâve developed it on. I could save the image and leave that Playground open, but Iâm just positive thatâs not a best practice. I also worry about what happens if I closed/cleared that Playground by accident. I think I understand that, if I created a new package, I could use Monticello to save it to a local cache and load it into a new image whenever I needed it. But, given that itâs short, highly specialized and fairly linear, the idea of creating a âGHBibDeskStuffâ package with one class (âGBibDeskKeywordFixerâ containing a single âFixFileâ method seems really heavy and awkward. On the grapevine I hear that over the next few years BHP are recruiting 2000 people for their Digital Technology Revolution using IoT in the mining/energy/resources industry. "We are doubling our permanent workforce across the globe and have roles based in Australia, Chile (Santiago), Singapore and The United States (Houston)" http://careers.bhpbilliton.com/cw/en/job/789065/technology-revolution Forbe's rate BHP the world's 168th largest company and BHP seem to want to throw some serious money at innovation. As part of this BHP is sponsoring an online hackathon "Digital Tribes" https://www.unearthed.solutions/digital-tribes-perth/ based out of Perth - my home town. Applications are open to anyone around the world and will focus on IoT challenges. Whether you are a student, working full time or joining from anywhere around the world, if you are a "digital native" with hardware and software skills, then this one is for you. Challenge 1: Can you enable operational awareness on civil equipment to achieve compliance to our mine plans? Challenge 2: Can you design a prototype which operates in an ad hoc network suited for distributed safety devices? So the task is probably going to be something to do with location awareness of personelle around haul packs (look for the people in the photos) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haul_truck It would be really cool to get some Pharo into the mix of solutions. Regardless of individual team success or even want a job with BHP, Pharo could gain a lot from simple exposure to some of BHP's key innovation decision makers. How to grab a debug on Syntax Error?

Hi I'm loading some old code to migrate to github and I got an syntax error. The support is a bit terrible. You get a pop up but now idea how to do anything with it. Can we access the stack? We should really improve that part. Now I'm using an old Pharo 40 and trying to guess where was the difference in synta (probably #( #3)) is not allowed anymore and republish a new version. Stef

The latest vm from http://files.pharo.org/vm/pharo/mac/ should be the right one. In Sierra Apple broke some path extension code. That was not correctly described in the release notes, so it took us some time to notice and fix. Pharo4 is a cog, non-spur image. Stephan

Hi, i have a private rewriting rule. unfortunately it shows up in the lower pane of the SystemBrowser which makes no sense at all, since it is not intended for use outside of the program using it. how do i make it invisible for that part of the systembrowser? and btw where are the rules collected for that part? werner
