Wow that's very promising - how do I get that setup? I also believe for lambda I need 64 bit as you have little control of the base image? I haven't had a chance to try marshalling results back to Alexa yet - but that's my goal. Ah-ha! You are right, the proper way to encrypt is with the salt and then prepend the salt. I would like to understand in more detail what data are serialized, if I can somehow alter it (filter it) explicitly, and how can I handle errors on materialization. I was playing a bit with it and in some case, during the materialization, it complained that there is a missing class, but I was pretty sure that the class has nothing to do with the serialized objects. And creating only a few accounts in your system will probably reveal that information as well. A wrong-doer will just use a fake salt and will still be able to try a rainbow table attack. Please use a real random value for the salt. And easiest would be to give it a fixed size. (Don't have an image and/or code available, so this might lead to some pseudo code ;-) To generate a safe password hash which you can store in your db, the following method. It creates a random number (your example of a UUID of 16 bytes) and uses that as a salt for the password hash. Both values are then concatenated and returned as a 'safe' password. This can be stored in your db. To validate a user's password you retrieve the safePasswordHash from your db (based on the user's id) and validate the given password against it. For this the salt is retrieved from the safePasswordHash (first 16 bytes because UUID is 16 bytes) and it is then used to calculate the hash of the given password. Thanks Pierce and hernanmd I decided to adopt the solution of the prepended salt as Erik said in the previous post. Here is my code, I hope it can be useful for the community First I hash the password with an empty salt PBKDF2 derivedKeyHashFunction: SHA256 password: 'aSimplePassword' salt: '' iterations: 3000 length: 16 . I would have liked to avoid the empty salt but the message deriveKey needs it. Then I used UUID new as real salt and the string '$$' as separator between the salt and the hashed password. So here is the byte array I'm going to store in my db saltPlusHashedPassword := UUID new , '$$' asByteArray , (PBKDF2 derivedKeyHashFunction: SHA256 password: 'aSimplePassword' salt: '' iterations: 3000 length: 16 ). To validate the password, I retrieve the saltPlusHashedPassword from the db and splitting it hashedPassword := (saltPlusHashedPassword splitOn:('$$' asByteArray)) second. Finally the validation (PBKDF2 derivedKeyHashFunction: SHA256 password: 'aSimplePassword' salt: '' iterations: 3000 length: 16 ) = (ByteArray new, hashedPassword). Note, I have to concatenate ByteArray new with hashedPassword because hashedPassword is not a ByteAttay but a UUID, if you have a smarter way to do it you are welcome. Francis, The hashpw function returns a hash with the salt prepended. So it contains both elements. (See for example explanation at: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/27413248/why-can-bcrypt-hashpw-be-used-…) You can do the same thing here. Assuming you have a fixed size salt, just prepend it before the hash value. Since the salt is (should be) random, returning it's value does not weaken the security. Using a salt prevents against rainbow table attacks: pre-generated hash values for many possible passwords. Solved: ZdcPluginMissing: SSL/TLS plugin initailization failed (VM plugin missing ? OS libraries missing ?)

Hi, Thanks Sven. This solves the problem. The issue was the 32 bit library. I don't know if this should be added as some kind of annotation or footnode to [1], because the chapter suposse a 32-bit Ubuntu Gnu/Linux deployment, but some of us are going to try similar stuff in similar environment, forgetting to install the 32 bits libraries. Anyway, if there is any room for this, I would be happy to make the edition with the respective pull request. Please allow me a little rant here... I still find disturbing the"autosave" feature without having the option to explicitly save the contents in the filesystem as I did with Workspaces. Sometimes I don't want the contents of a file/tab updated by a criteria different than when to save the image, it is: my own when I consider appropriate. It's not I want to disable Playground by complete which I find useful when integrated with the inlined insector, but I want to keep the behavior of saving and restoring the contents under my control. Privacywise I don't like the "history" of previous contents in the Playground, the history it can be removed but it can't be disabled. One of the more hidden Playground features are named Pages. Double-click the page tab title and give it a name, it will then be saved automagically in pharo-local/play-stash (and auto saves on changes from then on). Pharo6 playground saving semantics and .changes?

Hi - I really like the playground metaphor, it really is such a nice way to experiment. However I've noticed that unlike older versions of Smalltalk, it seems that DoIt operations in playground don't end up in the .changes file anymore (which I guess is a mixed blessing when you want to recover). It seems that the new metaphor is that work you do is saved as a page and you can see versions of your page in the upper right menu? Well sort of - as I haven't quite understood when it saves or doesn't? Often I get duplicate looking pages in that menu and often I make a change and want to keep it but find it doesn't save and if I accidentally close my playground my changes in a page are lost? What are the semantics of page saving? Pharo command line, stdout and integrating with other tools?

Hi - I've been playing with using Pharo with Aws lambda and have got an image to launch in that environment. However now I need to better integrate Pharo with its calling environment - and I know there was a concerted effort to make Pharo play better which I should be able to leverage. So I am calling Pharo from a NodeJS wrapper (the suggested aws method for integrating alternative languages like Ruby, Go etc). I got this to work - however as an observation, it is rather awkward passing parameters to Pharo using the "eval" mechanism as other languages and environments frequently use the " character (particularly with Json) and this causes Pharo to fail if you don't \" this. I'm wondering if others have noted this and whether we can do this better somehow? For now a little nodeJS regex fu gets me past it. However my next question is about passing information back to the calling application. I can see that there is a stdout method on Fikestream that I can write to (great), however in my ./pharo eval call, which sends to a class method doing this - it also returns the result of that method or yourself? I guess this convention is great for the "eval 42 factorial" example but not so great of you just want to return some Json via stdout in a format of the calling environment? Is there something simple trick I can do to stop this extra result and just let me use stdout myself? Or do I have to return a Smalltalk string and then regex convert it to a new format in my calling language? I'm wondering if others have done this, or if anyone has some advice? Hi, I'm trying to deploy a small web app in Teapot, following the Enterprise Pharo documentation and so, using Pharo 4 in the server. Installation went fine, but when I try to actually use the app and I get this error: ZdcPluginMissing: SSL/TLS plugin initailization failed (VM plugin missing ? OS libraries missing ?) Looking at [1] I see that this is because Pharo VM is expecting to found libssl at some place. My server is a virtual Debian 6 64 bits, as provided by Digital Ocean. When I locate the missing library and make a symbolic link using: ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libssl.so.1.0.0 /usr/lib/libssl.so.1.0.0 I still get this behavior: ldd libSqueakSSL.so linux-gate.so.1 (0xf7747000) libssl.so.1.0.0 => not found libc.so.6 => /lib32/libc.so.6 (0xf758b000) /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0xf774a000) So, still is not finding the libssl.so. Norbert: Great answer. Spoken like a wise man. I want a web app to fill paper forms - like income tax forms say. The forms are scanned or input into the app. The developer provides the logic connecting the input and output fields of the forms. The users then use the app to fill their own forms, print them or send them electronically. Can Smalltalk provide a superior solution? How? Thanks Sven - I was going to search for that as I recall it being talked about. I will give it a go and report back on results with Lambda. Web technology is really complex and is able to serve a huge amount of use cases. I don't think there can be one framework solving all the problems for all the use cases. So every framework focusses on a different aspect. I would turn your comment around. If you want to be successful in the web environment you need to learn about the fibres it is made of. As soon as you dive into I think all those frameworks will separate before your eyes quickly. Maybe it is good that you first come up with a problem you want to solve. My aim was to write an Alexa service in pharo vs nodejs like I have been doing. I was assuming I can call pharo via the eval option and stringify the Jaon Alexa Paramus and return a result via Stdout... well in theory, and the work to make pharo play better in wider ecosystem. It should work, and it seems you did make it work... but how? Like you, I am wondering when I run it on an ec2 instance (non lambda), why it takes so long to load? It feels like it can be faster? Ah - I see. Is this where the minimal images would help? As in CI would just take a base image and just load zn and hence run the new initialise anyway and so avoid this? I'm a bit confused how how base images are built to even have this problem In a world of CI? Are we able to run pharo images in a read only environment?

Hi - I am trying to run a pharo image in lambda (as an experiment) - however I get an error from Pharo about not being able to write to the changes file? As I am just evaluating some code - Iâm not really coding, so donât need a changes file - is there a command line option to not require it? Also, am I running pharo the most efficient way - Iâm using eval on the command line and referencing a class with a class method - but is this the best way? Using Iceberg to edit regular text files ?

Is it possible to use Iceberg to edit regular text files directly in Pharo ? Specifically I would like to be able to edit README.md and similar files. Especially when using a all-in-one, the repo on file becomes quite hidden, and the whole idea is to hide the command line anyway, so it feels as if that should have to be possible. Maybe just open a File Browser on the right directory ? Sven PS: I also had the impression that class comment changes did not show up in the diff browser.

Offray: Diversity is good. But we can get too much of a good thing. For example, I see merit in VisualWorks Appex where Smalltalk and JavaScript are both managed within the System Browser. Additionally, changes to JavaScript made in the Internet browser are picked up by VisualWorks. Now, Appex allows live debugging in both front end and back end. And the combined code is maintained in VisualWorks. Craig Latta is doing something interesting with SqueakJS which is an optimized Smalltalk VM in JavaScript and HTML5. It is supposedly able to run Smalltalk fast inside the browser and access the JavaScript world freely. I think this route will benefit greatly from WebAssembly. Can PharoJS borrow some of these ideas? Pros and Cons? Hi Pavel, Are your suggesting I should be using a pre-built image with minimal requirement? : One for UI only : BaselineOfUi ? One for IDE tools: BaselineOfIDE. ? In Dr. Geo to write script, one need at least access to a playground and a class browser. Which of this image should be used then? Hi Pavel & Esteban, Thanks very much for your replies. What I wanted to do was to replace the line: ./vm/pharo Pharo.image eval --save "Metacello new baseline: 'IDE';repository: 'filetree://../src'; load" with one that would keep the repository associated in Iceberg. Of course, since this is the line that loads Iceberg, that's a bit difficult at the moment (I guess it would be possible to tell Iceberg that the loaded source matches the repository, and just associate it without loading, but I'd have to spend quite a bit more time on figuring that out). I want to focus on getting my patch that fixes #isSymlink and other file attributes finished and submitted, so I'll look at this again after that's done. Hilaire I like your goal because this is what we want to achieve. what you should know is that the Pharo packages that we load to create Pharo are not all modular because they were not. We started to get Pharo modular and we will continue. On two fronts: - getting the core smaller - getting pharo more modular So if you see - packages where a dependency can be easily removed (for example by producing two packages instead of one). - packages that can just be loaded separately (we could just create a new package out an larger one). - packages that can just be thrown away. let us know. Hilaire, Pay attention, we (pharo) bootstrap the minicore image based on git You do not need to bootstrap pharo you can simply apply the buildscript on the minicore image. then we use a buildscript to load pharo packages. In the future we expect that people will be able to - take the miniimage and build with specific script (mainlu metacello configuration) their own specialized image I would focus on this part if I would be you. Hi Pavel, I removed deprecated method uses, then I updated accordingly the 'development' configuration of Dr. Geo. Hope it helps. Planet squeak and friends

Hi, This now seems to work though there are a few points: * [http://pharo.org/news/atom.xml](http://pharo.org/news/atom.xml) gives me a 502, but, [http://pharo.org/news/](http://pharo.org/news/atom.xml)ÃÂ works fine.ÃÂ Could someone look into this please? * I have renamed any site that still responds but has not been updated in 2017 to Historical - site name.ÃÂ There are sadly only 6 sites NOT marked historical and 16 marked historical.ÃÂ Surely there are some other squeak/pharo/?? blogs, right?ÃÂ If so, please send them to me! * In a few weeks most of the historical sites will disapear.ÃÂ * I've not looked hard at any other than planet.squeak.org.ÃÂ * Planetfr.squeak.org had no sites.ÃÂ Should we keep it? * As sad as I might be about it, croquet seems to have passed on.ÃÂ Should I just get rid of planetcroquet?
