How do Smalltalk disambiguate messages?

I am trying to do a JavaScript experiment to make Objects behave like Smalltalk objects. example: "reminder: Smalltalk arrays start at 1." |arr| a := Array new: 1. a at: 1 put: 'Hello, World'. Here, the Smalltalk array has a message "at: index put: value" which is defined many layers of prototype chaining down, at Object in category accessing. However there are many messages on the way traversing the prototype chain that start with "at:", such as(SequenceableCollection) "at: x ifAbsent: y", "at: x incrementBy: y". How does Smalltalk tell which message is which? Does it merge the messages into a single message such as "at: x put: y" to "atPut(x, y)" at some point? Without knowing this, I have to traverse the whole call chain and check whether each argument is called in a specific way, which is incredibly expensive. If there was a single name such as "atPut" I can easily just do a dictionary lookup for this name and get it at O(1). Hi Esteban, The config stops because the SkipLists package isn't in the FuzzySearcher repo and whatever repo it is in isn't set as the repository to look in. Do you know what repo the SkipLists package is in? I have no idea why it happens but sometimes OSProcess resumes working after doing a OSProcessAccessor initialize. in a workspace..... OSProcess lock image

Hello, On Pharo4, when I type the command: OSProcess waitForCommand: 'ls' it locks the image, I can get back control with [Alt]-. With the same image and VM, this command was previously working, even called from a Seaside component. Any idea? Thanks Hilaire -- Dr. Geo http://drgeo.eu

Hi Horrido The tinyblog tutorial is a tutorial on build a real little web application. We worked on it with Olivier and we decided to reuse an adpat it for the mooc. If you want to help what we are trying to do is the following (but I need time hence you can help): - take the mooc version (luc fabresse took the tinyblog tutorial and improved it and cut) - fold it back (without touching to the mooc exercise too much) into the original version of tinyblog - add more chapters - release the tutorial new version as a new book. - So if you read the mooc and find english mistakes please report them. read tinyblog and find engslish mistakes please report them. we should really read side by side the mooc and the tutorial version to improve the tutorial version. You got 2 options a) for regular GUIs a combination of halos and inspector will give the information you need about the proper location, size etc and allow you to fine tune your morphs far easier than doing it by code b) for custom GUIs you divert the design to a proper design application like gimp , photoshop or blender and create the look you want with the elegance of custom design, you can take a look on my ChronosManager project at Catalog browser as an example of how you can import images with transparency --------------------------------------- NON PHARO OPTIONS --------------------------------------- c) this option I have not tried but it should be possible to design also a custom GUI using a vector designer , like adobe illustrator or Inkscape and import those vectors as svgs formats back to Pharo. Athens has an SVG importer and so does Roassal. d) also you can use HTML and Seaside/PharoJS and leverage well know technologies like js dom/html5/CSS as you may be aware there are a ton of tools out there that design GUIs using these technologies e) you could use my Python bridge to use PyQT that uses QT probably the most powerful GUI out there that also come with a super powerful GUI designer called QTCreator which has evolved it full blown IDE, this one requires knowledge of Python and you may have to modify the bridge to fit your needs f) if you are not in a hurry I am making a Pharo to Unreal bridge which gives access not only 2D GUIs but also 3D GUIs with the graphic capabilities of AAA games and the added bonus of Virtual Reality GUIs if you want to blow the minds of your users. I could carry on but I think you can figure out the rest by yourself.
