Send message on pharo open/close?

I need for my application to register its main class somehow, that pharo will send a message (class side) to it whenever image is started/finished, for example, to reconfigure database connections as they get invalid when image closes and opens again. Is there any hook for pharo to be able to send a message to my class on image open and close? Thanks.

Using the ~pharo/stable PPA

Hello list, it looks to me that old and new packages have different dependencies. If you're *not* using pillar or phratch, and have problems updating the pharo packages, please execute dpkg -l | grep -i pharo | awk ' { print $2 } ' | xargs sudo apt-get -y purge ; sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install pharo-launcher "dpkg -l | grep -i pharo | awk ' { print $2 } '" will list all installed pharo-packages, xargs will give that result to apt-get for the packages to be purged (that is, remove all their data and metadata - the images that you have in your home directory will NOT be affected). Hi Serge, as I said I do not really have the time now to get involved in a gsoc proposal, but I can give you my perspective. There are two sides to the story. The first one is complementary to SciSmalltalk: in order to analize data, you need to get data in first. So, one may want to read - say - a CSV, and have a number of heuristics, such as: - autodetection of encoding - autodetection of quotes and delimiter - autodetection of columns containing numbers or dates - the possibility to indicate that some markers, such as "N/A", represent missing values - the possibility to indicate a replacement for missing values, such as 0, or "", or the average or the minimum of the other values in the colums See http://pandas.pydata.org/pandas-docs/version/0.15.2/io.html#csv-text-files for some examples. It may be worth to consider making this into a sequence that is read and processed lazily, to deal with CSV files bigger than memory. When data is finally in, usually the first task is doing some processing, inspection or visualization. The Smalltalk collections are good for processing (although some lazy variants might help), and Roassal and the inspectors are perfect for visualization and browsing. The second part comes the time when one wants to run some algorithm. While there is no need to have the fanciest ones, there should be some of the basics, such as: - some form or regression (linear, logistic...) - some form of clustering (kmeans, dbscan, canopy...) - SVM Another thing which would be useful is support for linear algebra, leveraging native libraries such as BLAS or LAPACK. In short: just copying R, or numpy + pandas + scikit-learn would already be a giant leap forward. Actually, some of the things I have mentioned above are already (I think) in SciSmalltalk, which brings me to the next point: documentation. There is really no point in having all these tools if people do not know they are there. For this to become useful, there should be a dedicated site, highlighting what is already available, in what state (experimental, partial, stable...) and how to use it. Ideally, I would include also some tutorials, for instance for dealing with standard problems such as Kaggle competitions. Here I think Smalltalk would have an edge, since these tutorial could be in the form of Prof Stef. Still, it would be nice if some form of the tutorials was also on the web, which makes it discoverable. Thank you Doru, I just use Roassal and it's RTHTML5 exporter that's the cool thing about it. The RTHTML5 exporter is the very good work of Milton. So for me I don't have to care about the interaction. But the exporter itself use some JavaScript etc... Vincent There are two types of items I have been inspecting â WideString and XMLDocument. I donât think itâs relevant, but the text of the WideString is usually either the content of an XMLDocument file or an intermediate stage in constructing this file. In any case, the source of the inspected object is a workspace variable. The origin of the text is a downloaded Wiktionary page (in its basic wikitext form), but, by the time I am inspecting it, it is just a local variable. Apart from originally reading the file using XMLDOMParser>>#parseUrl:, I make no use of external resources. I thought the error message in the red rectangle was unreadable, but studying it carefully I see that it is always the same message: âUndefinedObject (Object)>>doesNotUnderstand: #displayString:on:from:to:at:kern:baselineY:â, which is a method associated with various font display processes. It looks as though the display code is trying to access details of the object displayed, and finding that they have disappeared in the save and reload process. I am copying this to the addressees of yours, but I may not be able to reach the Moose list because I am not a member. Or use Semaphores, forks, network? I am remembering a bug on Roassal. It used external ressources that was desallocated at image shutdown. On image relaunch, the external ressources was still pointed by a cache and the yellow cross on red appears. By the way, behind the cross, it should be a text, can you see it? As you click on an item in the current display, a new inspector pane opens to the right showing detail of the selected item, with tabs to select the form of display â the first one is always âRawâ but the others are dependent on the kind of item being displayed, e.g. if inspecting an XML document there is always a âTreeâ option. I think that sounds like Glamour, doesnât it? The main heading on the title bar is static, i.e. it always shows the item you originally inspected. When there are multiple inspector panes open, each one has its own title below the main window title, showing the item that was clicked to open it. In this case, the title of the first inspector pane, which is the same as the main window title, is also replaced by the red error display, but the titles of the other inspector panes are OK.
