Re: [Pharo-users] Messaging solutions for Pharo

by Brian Brown

I've used XMPP extensively for several projects, from python, JavaScript, and Squeak - the wonderful thing about it is that you can start off simple using just chat messages, but then add more features like pub sub, conference rooms, service discovery, etc. Scalability is built into the system, and you start out with Prosody jabber server (easy to get going, written in Lua). There are a lot of good books on the protocol and its supported by most environments you can think of... Now for the "bad" news. The library I used in smalltalk was written by Michael Rueger, and I don't think it has been updated for years; I think there is a version on squeaksource, so it would have to be brought up to current state of XML libs and so forth. Anyway, I like XMPP ;-) - Brian On Nov 19, 2014 1:29 PM, "Sven Van Caekenberghe" <sven(a)stfx.eu> wrote: > > > On 19 Nov 2014, at 20:52, Esteban A. [ANN] Hubcap - a SmalltalkHub API and browser for Pharo

by Torsten Bergmann

Hi, as I wanted to browse the SmalltalkHub contents directly from within Pharo image I wrote a simple browser: Gofer it url: 'http://www.smalltalkhub.com/mc/TorstenBergmann/Hubcap/main'; configurationOf: 'Hubcap'; loadDevelopment. Attached is a screenshot. Works on Pharo 4.0. Still not finished but maybe it is already useful to others as well. One can access the tool from the world menu, implementation lives in "Hubcap-Tools" package. The UI shows and allows to filter users, shows their projects and packages. Special icons display the state (loaded, modified, public writable, ...). One can load from the UI or open Monticello tools. The "Hubcap-Core" package includes an API to query STHub and write expressions like: HubClient new allProjectsForUserNamed: 'TorstenBergmann' HubClient new hasUserNamed: 'TorstenBergmann' So "Hubcap-Core" may be usefull to people who want to build other tools that depend on STHub infos. Basic documentation lives on http://www.smalltalkhub.com/#!/~TorstenBergmann/Hubcap and as class comment on ConfigurationOfHubcap. Beware: the tool is sill not optimized, any clicking involves a query to STHub (hope STHub will not crash when many people use it). API may still undergo changes in the future. Also teams are not yet supported as STHub still returns an MNU error in the REST interface: http://www.smalltalkhub.com/hub/teams?term=Pharo Anyone able to fix that? Thanks to Stephan Eggermonts who gave me the initial idea with some code I've found in "Deprecation finder" and to Sven for the easy to use NeoJSON package. Contributors can just commit, the project is public. Bye T.

RTMultiCompositeShape + Bitmap

by rosariosm

Hello, When i try to add a vertical/horizontal layout to a RTMultiCompositeShape that has a Bitmap shape, it cant render the layout because a RTBitmal dont understand #extent. For example: | element label bitmap composite view | label := RTLabel new text: 'hello'. bitmap := RTBitmap new form: (Form dotOfSize: 10). composite := (RTMultiCompositeShape with: label with: bitmap) vertical. element := RTElement new addShape: composite. view := RTView new add: element; open Thanks! Basically, there is a parser, a set of objects modeling the structure of a bibtex database, and the "phrases", which are a sort of template system, or reverse parser, that can format bibliography data into other forms. I've never been really happy with this template system. In bibtex, the equivalent is basically a handwritten imperative program⦠On 18 November 2014 13:06, Offray Vladimir Luna Cárdenas <offray(a)riseup.net> wrote: > Damien, > > I will. Thanks for your help. Plausible Pharo 32 bit / 64 bit conflict..? http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms712362%28v=vs.85%29.aspx "If you use the 64-bit odbcad32.exe to configure or remove a DSN that connects to a 32-bit driver, for example, Driver do Microsoft Access (*.mdb), you will receive the following error message:" On Thu, Nov 20, 2014 at 1:35 PM, olivier auverlot < olivier.auverlot(a)gmail.com> wrote: > Hi, > > I try to use the ODBC framework presents in the configurations list and > named "ODBC (TorstenBergmann.5)" > > I want connect Pharo to a Postgresql server and I installed the latest > version of the ODBC driver. Hello Olivier, did you create the DSN using C:\WINDOWS\SysWow64\odbcad32.exe ? The 32 Bit ODBC Adminstration Console is located in SysWow64, if you just start the ODBC Adminstration Console from the system admin tools, you will get the 64 Bit version, which is located in C:\WINDOWS\system32 :)

Pharo and ODBC

by olivier auverlot

Hi, I try to use the ODBC framework presents in the configurations list and named "ODBC (TorstenBergmann.5)" I want connect Pharo to a Postgresql server and I installed the latest version of the ODBC driver. The datasource is configured as system datasource. The connection test is ok. My computer uses Windows 7 64 bits. In Pharo, I try to connect with the following code: connection := ODBCConnection dsn: 'mysource' user: 'myuser' password: 'mypassword'. connection close. The connection fails and I get an error message: "The data source (DSN) has a specified architecture incompatibility between the driver and the application". Someone have an idea about this problem ? Someone works with the ODBC solution ? Best regards Olivier

The I/O would be minimal (< 1KB) per message, and the requests would be measured in minutes instead of seconds. Although a 50 ws frames/sec peak during a couple of seconds is feasible. I don't have any production level experience with (Zinc) WebSockets. But we have some Pharo images in production doing related things. Based on that I would say 100s of concurrent open connections is doable, but I would be careful if you know you will scale to 1000s. Why ? Because each connection is a socket(stream) with 3 semaphores and a process/thread. It will still work, but it might be harder to keep things together. BTW, this is not a Pharo problem per se, it will be hard(er) everywhere. I just read that MQTT over WebSockets also exists ;-) I guess that you have no RabbitMQ experience so maybe that scares you a bit, you will have to learn some new things, but it is not hard (and it is quite interesting). In terms of doing MQTT directly in Pharo, I would start with the client side, it can't be very hard to do (there are many clients already). > Regards, > > [1] http://mosquitto.org/ > > El Wed Nov 19 2014 at 4:22:56 PM, Sven Van Caekenberghe <sven(a)stfx.eu> escribió: > Hey Esteban, > > Since you seem to need to scale to 1000s of concurrent connections, I would go for option 2. Re: [Pharo-users] Messaging solutions for Pharo

by Esteban A. Maringolo

My current use case is pretty simple, being able to push requests to the remote devices, and gather the data back, assuming the remote devices (clients) are already connected to the server, which is a client-related problem with any messaging solution. I learn about MQTT when looking for alternatives to Google Cloud Messaging for Android (which is built on to of XMPP). Facebook Messenger uses MQTT. I don't want to develop an overkill solution that could delay deliverance of value to my customer, though I find implementing an MQ/MQTT solution intellectually challenging. I even read the standard a few months ago, and it seems to be simpler than expected. I'd love to go down the "implement MQTT server in Pharo", I would lose a real MQ scalability, but it could be a good way to learn the protocol, and an alternative to Mosquitto [1] with the benefits of having a server inside the image. Do you have experience with the scalability of Zinc WebSockets? How many of them can a single Pharo image handle? The I/O would be minimal (< 1KB) per message, and the requests would be measured in minutes instead of seconds. Although a 50 ws frames/sec peak during a couple of seconds is feasible. Hey Esteban, Since you seem to need to scale to 1000s of concurrent connections, I would go for option 2. RabbitMQ will then work as a demultiplexer and you gain options for using more than one Pharo worker for processing traffic, if that ever becomes necessary. BTW, I never heard of MQTT and it seems pretty interesting, thanks ! I will read about it tonight. Sven > On 19 Nov 2014, at 19:06, Esteban A. Hi Esteban, Never used either of them, but IIRC there was a Jabber package in Visualworks (JabberXMPP?), although not sure if it provided both client and server. There is also http://www.squeaksource.com/@zQrCJXpxIQLxqde8/tV369AO0. Seems dated, but maybe worth a shot considering you only need the server side?
