AST tokens question

Hi all, Trying to understand here how tokens are used in AST. So far I can not see any order in usage of tokens. For instance, why RBValueNode doesn't have token? Is it haow it's supposed to be? Cheers, Mark

Very interesting , I always wonder how you can combine those two together. Really nice I now see the teapot stuff, for example this GET: 'demo/common/style.css' -> [ self styleCss ]; is really flexible meaning you can interpret http addresses and map them to pharo methods. This a really cool idea indeed, I see now why people are excited about teapot. Excuse my ignorance about web development but html/css and js always scared me away :D If its that simple I am definetly going to use this for my website with pharo as backend as you did with this example. As I said to my other reply , its not as a good idea as you may think because it separates the user from the pharo enviroment. Nothing wrong with doing this for an end product that you want to deliver to users that have no clue about coding and no intention learning. I have explained in my other reply how to hide the Pharo IDE from the end user so I wont repeat myself here. But a hello world example is made for developers not users, so they can learn and separating them from the IDE and the environment is not what Pharo is. Its actually against the spirit of Pharo. Pharo is very similar to emacs its a tool made easy to hack because it is meant to be hacked, changed , played around and extended by anyone using it. Pharo IS NOT a simple tool to learn, its actually very complex. So exposing the developer in its internals early one is damn good idea, because it really forces you go outside your comfort zone , forget how you code in other programming language and instead think how to code in Pharo. So naturally Pharo has no need for a hello world example because unlike other languages Pharo is not afraid of complexity, it embraces it by giving you powerful tools to deal with. While other programming languages try to run away from complexity and fail miserably at it. Pharo on other hand as you will experience yourself deals very well with complex code and makes it easier to refactor it and understand it mainly because of the IDE tools. So I would say to any new developer, forget other languages and what you know about them, coding in Pharo means stepping inside a completely new dimension and that means having to rethink anything one knows about coding and dealing with development tools. Some may hate this (and its perfectly fine) but then Pharo is not and should not be for everyone but for people who want a more immediate connection with their code and their software environment. In the end there is no right and wrong and each developer will choose if it worth for him or her to learn Pharo. Every language and development tool out there has its strength and weaknesses. But foremost he will realise that this is Pharo , a tool much different from anything else. Lets put some thing in order. The core principle is "Live code enviroment" not to be very philosophical about this, the bottom line is that you should not think a pharo app as a regular app, where the application is clearly separated from the environment. Instead you should think of it more like an organism , they are one unit interdependent. Everything is just objects and they are alive. No apps . No OS. No libraries . No source code. Not even asset files, like jpgs , svgs, icons etc. Everything are objects. So "press to start" button does not make sense for pharo as it would for other programming languages. So how you start your application is completely dependant on you. You can create a window inside pharo and maximise it, or create a big morph and stich it. That morph will cover the entire pharo window and the user wont be able to make it go away , that means the user wont be able to have access to the Pharo IDE so your user wont be aware that what he has is the full Pharo system. He / She will see only the GUI of you application. You can dig to the specific by taking a look at Phratch which does exactly that (though Phratch also has a hidden option to resize the gui so it exposes the pharo desktop and it gives you access to the world menu). Its not hard though for example for my project Hyperion which is a simple vector graphics editor I made the window sticky so the user cannot move it by using the beSticky message, can it be any simpler than that ? I am sure Morph class has other methods as well to deal with such situations. Actually Morphic is very powerful stuff and praise should go to both Squeak and Pharo of course Self people that are behind its improvement and implementation. So I would say dont be afraid to experiment with morph methods , SystemWindow methods and all relevant classes you may find. Usually the name of the methods should explain what the method does. If it does not fire up your workspace and experiment. You can also take a look at test cases if they are available. If you want an actually example take a look at Phratch because its a really advanced lesson on how to do Pharo applications as standalones. Pharo also has startup utlilities for tasks you want to perform when you start your image and the ability to customise System Preferences of Pharo image so you can offer your user custom setting he can further customise to make the app behave exactly as he wants. Finally if you are not a fan of GUI or you dont need a GUI , Pharo is perfectly capable running as a terminal command , if you rename the executable as I said before you can make your own parameters. For example "myapp -doTask1 ". Pharo is extremely flexible. The more you know the more you can do. The entire system is hackable. Meaning you can modifying everything , even the language itself ,the vm, how it handles image files , you can integrate source files , image files, you name it. As long as you understand how the system works nothing stops you. I suppose that you are lying under the tables for laughing flash !! hahaha To familiarize with the coding - saving - starting in general of smalltalk , may i ask you to make a short : step by step guide , to create a program that shows : " Hello World ". a pharo image self starting program " hello world" . ______________________________________________________________ 1. Package name : World 2. Class name : CreateWorld 3. Method of CreateWorld : Transcript show: 'Hello World' Now here are the steps to do point by point to SAVE the program as another image. Hello , thank you for the answers. I will "copy" the folder on USB stick in the first way. Other options as github and launcher later. It is a little bit strange to start a program. There is one package. Inside the package are two classes. To start ONE class i do with classname new classname. But what must i do to start the whole programm ? Normally , after i have started the complete program. I have to save the program as the "program image file". Then this image will display the program when it is opened from the pharo.exe file. The program should run immediatelly in full screen mode. This sounds strange questions.

Actually its very simple on windows , macos and linux. You actually distribute the pharo folders as it is. You can rename the folder to the name of your application. In windows you can rename the folder and even rename the Pharo.exe to the name of your application , you can also change the icon, you can name your image anything you want the pharo binary will open any image it finds inside its folder , if there are multiple images it will display file dialog to let the user choose the image it want to load. You can zip the folder and send it to any of your friends via email or any other way that suits you. In macos a mac application is a folder , the mac users dont get exposed to binary executables , so all they see is that icon folder, so there is little reason to remame the binary executable, so all you have to do is rename the folder and add your own icon. Bare in mind that if you dont care about the looks you dont even neeed to rename the folder and the binary in either macos or windows or add your own icon. linux is a similar story. So basically in the question of what you need to do to distribute my code to people that dont have pharo installed in their system , the answer is "nothing at all, just copy paste the pharo folder containing your image". I dont think it can be any simple than that. One of the reasons of using pharo is how simple it is to distribute pharo applications. Any other language it get a lot more complex than that. As Stef said a more flexible way to do it is using Smalltalkhub, CI servers, git and github and probably many other options. But none of these options are necessary just to run your code in other pcs. These options offer you however better ways to manage code and test code in diffirent platforms.
