Hi, I am not sure whether Pharo implements or once implemented a special method like executeMethod: but in Smalltalk the selector for sending a message to an object is #perform: so you should probably try to replace #executeMethod with #perform: . But I am sure somebody more familiar with ProfStef and Pharo will comment on your issue more specifically. Hi all, Reading ProfStef at lesson 25 (Reflections), when I try to run the last statement <code>ProfStef default executeMethod: (ProfStef lookupSelector:#next).</code>, the error pops up saying <error>Unknown selector executeMethod:</error>. Shortcut to "Browse Class"

Hi all, As an absolute beginner, when using a workspace, most of the times I don't know the type of the value returned by a piece of code or its methods. So I have to select the value, right-click on it, from the menu (BTW is there a name for this menu?), select "Explore" and then select "Browse Class" or "Browse Full". ImageMorph scaling

How would I get an ImageMorph to automatically resize inside a Spec UI? I put it in a PanelMorph with various layout attempts, the latest being: image := PanelMorph new changeTableLayout; hResizing: #spaceFill; vResizing: #spaceFill; yourself. Where image above is an accessor referenced in #spec Then I added: imageMorph := ImageMorph new image: form; hResizing: #spaceFill; vResizing: #spaceFill; yourself. image addMorph: imageMorph. The form shows up as the full original size, but strangely if I bring up the halos on the ImageMorph and just wiggle the scaling halo, it resizes to fit the PanelMorph. But then if I resize the window again, the image doesn't rescale. An old version of spec is usable in 2.0 The 3.0 version is _far_ better. You may want to use MultiColumnListModel (itâs the widget used in the senders/implementors UI) Otherwise, you can indeed use the scroll sync example to sync to lists together. Suggestions for simple & easy-to-use libraries for HTTP and JSON?

Hi all, Apparently, I finally have the time to do something serious with Pharo. And I'm intending to get started ASAP before any interruptions :-) I'm planning to write a GUI front-end for an application that provides JSON interface --the JSON provider is Fossil SCM (fossil-scm.org) As the first step I need an HTTP client library that can handle GET/POST requests and a JSON parsing library. excellent post, detailed and to the point. I want to add that this is one of the big reason I left Python for Pharo , they both start with letter P but they are like night and day when it comes to distribution. With python you have to use something like py2exe , cxfrozen, pyinstaller. They have been a huge failure for me to package python apps. I packaged apps that worked on one windows machine but did not ward on another, with same hardware and os. To make things even worse python has nothing nowhere near smalltalkhub and squeaksource, there is pypi but it demands additional installations etc. I heard Distutils were a disaster which supposed to solve the problem and nowdays python still relies on pypi mostly for distribution of packages. Pharo on the other side its easy , you already have a self contained directory with pharo inside. No installation required. You package it in a zip file and ship away. The user unzips the file and he is ready to use pharo even if he runs it from a usb flash, no installation required. Your user wants additional functionality installed ? no problemo, call smalltalkhub and fetch your additional libraries no questions asked, no need to force user to install additional tools to get the job done. I love it ! This is what makes me so happy to use Pharo. Create a .exe application in Pharo 2.0

Hi Paolo, If you ask for how to build an EXE I guess you work on Windows and have already experience with building EXE's using other programming languages. Typically IDE's for C/C++, Pascal, VisualBasic, ... provide this concept, you have a main(), WinMain() or other entry point function into your program and provide some additional resources (like a custom icon, version info, ...). The development environment typically creates a file with an *.exe extension - internally this is a so called PE-File (portable executable) that when clicked is loaded by the OS loader and starts in your predefined entry point. Unfortunately is not a very flexible way to package anything into a single compiled executable. It is hard to ship an update - since you have to redeploy the executable anytime your program changes. Portable for EXE also means "portable on Windows only", since the PE-Format is Windows specific. Real portable environments that are based on virtual machines (VM) tyically use another path: they just have a single executable for the virtual machine itself. This virtual machine is implemented as a native windows, mac, Linux, ... application and your program is included in one or more portable file(s) running on top of this VM. Take Java as an example: you have a Java runtime environment with an EXE for the virtual machine (java.exe) and your program is portable since it is defined in a (Java) portable format (*.class files and *.jar archives). In Java you typically also do not deploy an EXE, you deploy the JAR archives and if not preinstalled maybe the Java runtime environment (JRE). Downside is: in Java the environment will have to be correctly set up, otherwise the virtual machine may not find the classes of your program - then you have to fight with loader problems, class path problems, ... Additional note: yes there are products in the market that allow you to also create an EXE from a Java program - but they do often nothing more than packaging up the program into a single EXE file for better handling - in the end they often use the virtual machine to run it. Microsoft does something similar nowedays - if you build an EXE in C# you end up with a native Win32 application in PE-Format that loads and runs the .NET runtime. So it is not more than an entrypoint into the more portable .NET world. Take care: while the basic concepts of .NET are portable (see Mono to run on Linux) the APIs are often very bound to Windows. Smalltalk (and Pharo) goes one step further: it also provides a native virtual machine (EXE) like in the other environments - but all the objects, packages, resources, ... even the IDE are hosted in a single data file (called the Image file with an *.image" extension). So you can compare it more with technologies like VMWare, VirtualBox, ... with portable images or portable game engines like ScummVM where the program runs on top of a VM and is shipped as a single file. To make long story short: ========================= 1. You typically and easy deploy by giving the Pharo VM executable away together with your custom image file (predefined for customer experience) and with you application setup (typically in fullscreen). 2. If you want to hide that it is done in Pharo and "customize" it a little bit more, specific on Windows: A. rename the virtual machine Pharo.exe into "MyKillerApp.exe" B. Prepare image - disable "Check changes file availability" in the Settings browser (if you do not need the code changes "*.changes") - disable "Check sources file availability" in the Settings browser (if you do not need the source code file "*.sources") - start you app to take up the full space of the Pharo window (sample can be found in http://www.smalltalkhub.com/#!/~Pharo/PharoLauncher) - do other things to customize, like providing a custom world menu (http://lists.gforge.inria.fr/pipermail/pharo-project/2010-September/032696.…) - save the image with a different name "MyKillerApp.data" (so no image extension if you like) C. You renamed the VM into "MyKillerApp.exe" (see Step A) so instead of Pharo.ini the VM system looks for a "MyKillerApp.ini" in the same directory. Add the name of your new image file here: [Global] ImageFile=MyKillerApp.data ... So when the user clicks on "MyKillerApp.exe" the virtual machine is started, reads the "MyKillerApp.ini" and loads the "MyKillerApp.data" Pharo image. D. If you want to have a nice custom icon use the "Resource hacker" freeware tool to exchange the icon of the virtual machine. If you need more customizations just have a look at VM building. Using MingW, CMake and friends and the Pharo VM tool chain it is easy to rebuild and adopte the Pharo VM (executable) to own custom needs. Here you can also provide an own custom icon or other execuable properties (like version info) by customizing the *.rc file. You can also implement custom VM plugins ... up to a whole new Pharo ;) An image is very very flexible. Note that you can even provide an own update server - to update customer images similar to how Pharo images are updated. If required and allowed the customer can also save the image in different states like saving a game. I would not recommend it - but technically it is possible. So depending how far you want to go (and how deep you will go into Pharo internals) anything is possible for shipping a customized environment. Bye T.

As you do a *java -jar app.jar* you can do *pharo app.image* Now to get an executable, what for? You dont need to create an exe file, pharo already comes with an exe file that contains the vm and pharo internals, everything else is in the image file. You can customize pharo to display only a specific gui, its a matter of creating the gui you want maximize it to whole screen and saving the image. Next time you open Pharo it will appear as it was when you saved it. Like they do with Chromeâ¦ I am sure one could generate the diff automatically and detect the cases when it does not work (and tell the user). Would be an interesting research project. Marcus

+1 Pharo should be Pharo :) And we should all push in that direction - minimal core - sweet integration with the rest of the world - objects - cool libraries > I think that we should be passionate about what we are doing. Look at Scala for example. Itâs becoming quite popular, and it was developed for 10 years. Pharo still has a lot of time to attract people, but we need to push something new. Itâs not java like smalltalk, or something smalltalk-inspired that looks like C. For me Pharo is what had to happen to Smalltalk: evolution. Usually Smalltalk is mentioned with â80â suffix. Pharo is Smalltalk2013. And we can make it really cool, but we should stick to smalltalk philosophy. Having tools, working with objects, etc...

moving moose to pharo 3.0

Hi, We essentially finished moving Moose to Pharo 3.0 (we still have 6 yellow tests but they needed attention anyway). It took about 4 people looking into issues for a total probably around 2 man-days of effort. The largest impediment was actually SmalltalkHub being down for one day :). What posed problems: - RB visitor now has correct visit* methods instead of accept* methods. The deprecation messages helped quite a bit. This meant (1) that we had to rename in our visitors the methods, and (2) that we had to change the old accept* messages. - RB nodes do not answer to #isLiteral anymore. Instead, they answer correctly to #isLiteralNode so that to avoid confusion with Object>>#isLiteral. This is good, and this meant that we had to hunt all #isLiteral usages in Moose. - Categories are no longer mapped on RPackages through 1-to-1. I think its unrealistic to expect accurate numbers in any way other than going outside and asking each coder what language he uses and for what platform. None the less, its not hard at all to validate at least with a substantial level of inaccuracy the numbers indicated by TIOBE , sure some languages may jump 2 -3 spots up and down but still the general idea is there. Mobile is nowhere near replacing desktop. And why isolate yourself to TIOBE plenty of sources online to see what interests developers the most. The problem with mobile is that ergonomically it has no chance of replacing desktop, well, ever. And even though new mobile devices come out with substantial hardware specs, the quality of software is underwhelming even if you compare it with desktop 10 years ago. Even the trend of the "almost dead" desktop developers that port their apps to mobile is to created dumb down very limited apps of their desktop versions. I downloaded a first person shooter the other day , a simple game nothing that could even remotely compete with FPS behemoths of desktop or consoles , and I was amazed how cumbersome it was to even operate for simple action of shooting and walking around. I gave up after 20 minutes of suffering. I think mobile is great for what it is , mobile. I was a big supporter of iPad app as a musical tool in gearslutz forums when most musicians there declared it as "overly expensive toy" , I made the extremely unpopular prediction that it would be embraced by pro musicians and amateurs alike and that was back when iPad was still a new thing. But to claim that it will replace desktop , now thats a very bold claim. I have an iPad and android phone and android tablet. I am a fan of the mobile platform. I do believe in its potential. But killing the desktop, is like any rumor including the words "kill" or "dead" an urban myth. Are those the same people that a decade ago were proclaiming Java dead ? I fail to see how Windows prohibited iPhone from appearing or anything in my quote saying that. They are not even in the same market. Well there is windows mobile and now windows 8 for phones and tablets but both are far from monopoly products. Plus iPhone is not even an OS unless you were referring to iOS. I was talking about desktop's future. For your quote to work it would imply Microsoft having monopoly to anything. Fortunately that is not the case. They are big but nowhere near that big. As far as I know, there is a bug in TextModel where the menu is hardcoded, and therefor can not be changed. In addition, as you have said, it is currently using directly Morphic menus that is bad. The issue 12051 [1] introduces Spec models for menus. The fix has yet to be integrated. Yeah I cant say I agree with Mr Kay my answer to his quote will be that he is wrong and that "the best way to predict the future is to create a monopoly" . After all Windows had and still has a very predictable future. But I can understand why he said that, and I most certainly would motivate this kind of thinking which I find it as the foundation of Smalltalk culture and why I love to use Smalltalk. Its kinda ironic that bigger (market share wise) something is the less mobile it becomes. To the rest of your reply, I cant really argue so deeply. Personally I am just a dude that does very basic things with git. As to why sourceforge lost some of its crowd to Github, for me its dead obvious that Github is a much more clean and well designed solution. I always saw sourceforge as too messy, and If sourceforge was our only alternative option then I would be pushing for improvement to Smalltalkhub. Unfortunately I am not interested into source control. I am mainly a GUI , graphics and sound / music coder. Maybe one day like you , after I have used it for much more projects, I will hate git, but so far it has worked great for my very simple needs. Building a simple UI with Spec. Problem with menus.

Hi, this is my first post in the Pharo group. I'm developing a simple Text Editor with some nice features as a way to understand how Spec works. It seems that Spec will be the default UI framework from Pharo 3 onwards, I know it's changing and evolving but I'll take the risk. The problem I'm facing is that I'm lost at trying to add a "Save as..." option in the menu. It seems that Spec is still using the Morphic MenuMorph>>ToggleMenuItemMorph but it's not clear to me hoy to add this item. On the other hand, inspecting the ComposableModel class, it seem that in the future this will be done directly in Spec as suggested by the ComposableModel>>addMenuItemsToWindowMenu: But so far that method simply says "do nothing". I'm really just a fairly uninterested bystander who's been eavesdropping. I don't much care one way or the other, except that I'd *love* to see Pharo explode into the popularity that it deserves. I think that may be the wrong attitude. Even if it doesn't, the best ideas will filter down to inferior languages/environments. Things like Visual Studio and Resharper are still trying to bring Smalltalk into the mainstream...though in a very limited scope. It either will supplant github or github will extend and embrace the ideas. Either way, the ecosystem improves. I could probably write a thesis about the actual economics and morality and sanity of using closed source created by a company like github vs. something like squeaksource (which I loved), but (AFAICT) the community is faced with exactly that sort of crisis. It takes time and effort to maintain and improve anything. People who are making money doing so are in a better position to make that "anything" nicer and friendlier to end-users than people who are working on it in their/our spare time. Which is probably the main reason that so many projects have moved to github. The last time I tried to download anything from it, I had to wade through 3 pages of "Download and install this malware to do things you already can!" searching for the "Never mind, just let me download the thing I want" link that was buried in all the crap. In the end, I *still* wound up with 3 things I didn't want. I can only assume they'd have tried to auto-install if I were running Windows. I found out the next day that they'd been acquired by some new company. I intend to avoid them like the plague from now on. Github might wind up in the same boat, but I think that would require some major redesign on their part. Several years back, when people were starting to realize that tools like Source Safe and SVN suck, I was involved in a long conversation sort-of along these same lines in one of the lisp communities. Everyone was looking for the next big thing in source control. At the time, Darcs looked like the thing that should win, but wouldn't. Git was too big, nasty, scary, and didn't work on Windows, so it didn't even seem to be a contender. Every option available was focused around old-school line-based diff's. Which seemed totally asinine from a lisp perspective: that was really about modifying leaves and branches in a tree. I probably got flamboyant about this at the time. Finally, someone politely suggested that I go ahead and write it myself if I thought it was such a great idea. So I tried, and it turned out to be a lot tougher than I'd expected. Most of what I learned from that experience was the basic lesson that I didn't have a clue about lisp. But the experience seems at least a little relevant here. Git seems like a horrible tool for tracking changes to a smalltalk...I dunno. I'm such an outsider and newb here that I'm not even sure about the proper terminology. Package, maybe? Whatever. Group of classes that you write and maintain that implements some sort of useful batch of functionality. At the same time...would it be worth the effort to implement something in the same realm that would be competing with an established opponent? Everyone was feeling the pain of source control systems that truly sucked. Linus felt that pain and threw a solution together. Its victory may be another great example of the way "less beats more", or it might be a testimony to name brand inertia. Or maybe it's just that intellectuals don't understand the wisdom of the market. Be that as it may. I still get riled up enough about source control to write long rants like this one when I have better ways to spend my time. Git sucks, but so does everything else. I don't have the time to invest in making it better. I'm too busy working on problems that I consider more interesting. I suspect this is the simple reality of what's going on here. If someone *does* care enough about the ecosystem to truly invest in a VCS that makes more sense than git, well, power to you. Monticello is quite good, especially with Metacello associated to it. I'd like to have the MetacelloToolBox working nicely with FTP repos and will spend a while on that in the coming weeks, but frankly, that's great to use to keep things in sync. I'd pay for STH but for private projects and with the bells and whistles of GitHub (Wiki, issues, teams, non smalltalk files etc).Long story short, GitHub is good also. Maybe consortium members fees could get into have STH supported. Phil

You will need to explain because I don't understand what you mean by centralized vs distributed , does not support working at the right granularity. Influence the way Github goes is besides the point at this point since we dont have a better alternative and I will be a great oracle to predict , or not, that we wont have one in the next decade. Unless something extraordinary happens and Pharo goes super popular. Being a commercial application has not stopped tons of open source projects porting to it. But hey what do they know. I am not sure what you mean about sourceforge, I see still loads of open source project using it. The thing I see right now, is that I already use Github with Filetree and Monticello-GIT and it works. Can see the commits I made manually to git and create git commits. The only thing it does not do is push though thats also pretty much a matter of adding the code. So it looks like monticello is already there. It could be polished and sophisticated git interaction be integrated but I think with time we will see those things as well hopefully I can give a helping hand. And if Git is good enough to version control Linux source, I dont see why it would be a big problem to Pharo. But even if it is should not be faster if we make extensions to git via monticello to work around these potential problems instead of doing a huge project from scratch ? I will keep trying Monticello-GIT , if it works as well it seems to work I will probably stick with it. I would love also to extend it when I become familiar with its internals. Big thanks to people behind this. I think being against git is perfectly fine, wanting to trying your own thing is awesome, focusing on pharo specific solution is of course a good thing. What matters is that we use technology that is robust and that we have a versioning system that works decentralized. All of that is solved by git. With filetree we have the proper granularity (methods) With github we have an awesome website, such as we have an aweseome website with smalltalkhub, execpt that monticello should be modernized. Sadly the community is too small to achieve that, and inventing yet another versioning tool/system won't help on the short run. Maybe, yes someday in the future we can have our own fancy fully object-oriented versioning system, but IMO that is wasted effort, as git/mercurial come very close to something ideal. I am happy to give more insight into git, because I think you have quite a wrong picture about it :)

Well I am for one promoting the use of Gihub mainly on the grounds of promotion of Pharo efforts. the more projects are uploaded on github the more exposure Pharo gets.Its also possible to have both Smalltalkhub and Github, we could use Github as a fallback, a backup system for Smalltalkhub and have monticello automagically commit to both with a press of a button. Github also offers a nice convenient way for issue tracking, bug reports, feature request and forums. Gist is excellent for generating code examples on the fly. Leveraging existing technologies means we can concentrate on new features and new ideas. Also not having to maintain Smalltalkhub from an operational basis is good news. We need to acknowledge that we are a very small community that needs to take to account that we dont have the manpower to afford Pharo specific solutions for everything and anything. Especially for such demanding task as versions control. Every user that comes to Pharo will ask "what new Pharo gives me to justify abandoning my existing favorite choice ? ". I take a look at previous experiments like squeaksource and I find little justification to not support Github. But then I am not against Smalltalkhub or other repos being available to Pharo. The more the merrier. On the matters of payment , sure you can do that too, but as I said , we are a very small community we need to be realistic about these things. I think it depends on how you see Pharo for yourself. I see Pharo not as a replacement but rather as an extension of available technology and I would love to see Pharo play better and better with existing technologies not just Github. Pharo is doing already this with Athens (Cairo) , NBOpengl (as well as previous opengl implementations) , Amber (though external to pharo , deeply related to it) and many more. Saying that, I am also a fan of Pharo precisely because is not afraid to do things its own way, try new fresh experimental ideas, go against the flow and brake some rules in the process. So I think the secret of success for Pharo is between being a good supporter of existing technologies but also a ground for bringing newones to the users. I will also love to see Smalltalkhub expand and improve and I even see myself why not contributing with my small effort to it. As we say in Greece "anything done with precise measure is perfection" . Just a thought on the discussions about Smalltalkhub beeing down and people would love to use Gibhub instead: I would rather pay for Smalltalkhub than use Github for free. And there is all this talk about building a business with Pharo - why not make a business from Smalltalkhub? The thought of course is that when Smalltalkhub would be a business, itâs makers could spend more time and effort keeping it up and running and adding new features. no you dont do anything wrong, unfortunately from what I have been told the update process is broken. Right now the best choices is to download directly from pharo website http://www.pharo-project.org/pharo-download this will get you the latest release from the version you choose there is also Pharo Launcher http://www.smalltalkhub.com/#!/~Pharo/PharoLauncher Pharo Launcher advantages over downloading directly from the pharo website is that it allows you with one click to download specific release and also custom images that contain specific libraries. It also helps you manage your image files, delete them, rename them , etc. I assume that most likely Pharo Launcher will replace the pharo update process but automatically getting the latest release, at some point in the future. In any case getting latest release is a very easy process. If you can describe your situation in detail with a simple script that you would "expect" to work, "sometimes" you can be surprised at how fast your needs can be met. Obviously I say sometimes because variable factors are many (problem complexity, other peoples priorities) - but (not to get your hopes up too much) I personally have been surprised at time by the speed of response from the Pharo community. Developers can only see-what-they-see from their own perspective. Users are a great asset to a framework to identify gaps. If you can detail your needs with sample code then I'm sure that would be appreciated. I might even give it a go, even though I am not so intimate with Spec. cheers -ben

If the app you are porting already uses GTK or Coccoa , then you may be also interested into Mars http://marsonpharo.wordpress.com/ I second what Stephane said that right now Morphic is the King as far as GUIs are concerned, documentation and available code. Spec is too much a moving target and far from replacing Morphic but its definitely a welcome clean up. Morphic is too messy at some areas but overall works really well considering anything you see inside pharo is build with it. I am also working on a new GUI API using Athens and Morphic. My focus is in custom drawn GUIs which is the exact opposite of Mars native look and some crazy ideas I have about gui design. Yet another "building a GUI" question

Hi everyone! This is my first message to the list. I've been learning Smalltalk and toying with Pharo 2.0 for some weeks now. One thing that has me puzzled is the many different ways to build GUIs. IÂ´m rewriting an app in Pharo as an exercise. It needs to display images in some parts. So far, I have: - Sent messages to (UITheme builder) - Created a SystemWindow, then #addMorph: to it, sending them #model: and so afterwards. - Tried and somewhat succeeded in building my GUI with Spec, which apparently doesn't know about images. - Read some stuff about Athens - Read some stuff about Morphic 3, and wondered if it will make its way into Pharo. - Read something about how Spec has changed a lot in Pharo 3.0 (which is labelled as alpha) On top of that, as I understand it, building GUIs with Morphic was originally meant to be a visual live process, however what I've read so far takes a programmatic approach. So... many questions, few clues, I am lost. I definitely need to use some AlphaImageMorphs in certain parts of the application, and while I find Spec's way easier, I'm at a loss when it comes to that part. Roassal design question

When using ROLightlyHighlightable the color is changed by giving the element to ROBlink which then sends #color: to the element's shape. What is gained by doing it like this? Wouldn't it be simpler for the element itself to be able to set the color of it's shape? (Also couldn't each shape be a subclass of element?)
