I started to use Spec, i love nested layouts and so on. But i've got a little problem. I'm creating a Window with 14 TextInputFieldModel and 14 ButtonModel and, to avoid the definition of 28 different instance variables (obviously), i created two arrays which contain the ButtonModel and the TextInputFieldModel that i need. ^ SpecLayout composed newColumn: [ :columnTeam | 1 to: 14 do:[:i| columnTeam newRow: [ :rowPlayer | rowPlayer add: (textPlayer at:i) ; add:#captainButton; add: (buttonStartingEleven at:i). ]. ..... Have a look at http://book.seaside.st You can also load my configuration from http://www.smalltalkhub.com/#!/~philippeback/Hackathon/source This will load the HOWebStack properly, and an app I did for an hackathon. This will give you a sample to work from. There are a bunch of packages in there, get ready for quite a load. If you have issues with this tell me, I'll put a pre made image on my web server for you. I dont know how Seaside works exactly but yes you can generate dynamically hmtl pages. I have only used Amber that also works with Pharo and it has objects to generate html dynamically. Most likely Aida-Web can do this too as well and there even more pharo libs for such tasks. I will let other members to tell you exactly how to do this in Seaside since they are much more experienced than me. (Actually, I have a class that creates an OrderedCollection and I want to create an html table to fill it with the data from the collection).Is it feasible? Yay, it works.. if i use: canvas image: surface asForm at: bounds origin sourceRect: (0@0 extent: surface extent ) rule: 34. instead of canvas translucentImage: surface asForm at: bounds origin. hmm.. i just don't understand why: image: aForm at: aPoint sourceRect: sourceRect rule: rule "Note: The public use of this protocol is deprecated. It will become private. Nobody in the outside world must assume that a thing like a combination rule has any specific effect." why it is considered private? i wanna blend my form with another using specific rule, and this is the only protocol available for that.. weird. My workflow just needs manual setup of the projects folder which I would like to be solved somewhat more clever. But as I can see it now I need to stick to my stuff. Sad. Note that this currently will install an old image, so you have to load newer packages afterwards in the image or exchange the image. Installation will surely be simplified in the future. How I use it ============ Just launch the Pharo launcher image using the platform specific VM. Usually for "end user experience" the launcher opens in full world mode - so you see no Pharo background/world menu - only the launcher. Initially on a new computer the left side with local images is empty. On the right side are the images that are available on the web. Note that there are refresh buttons at the top of the list. Click "Refresh" in the right list to fetch all available images from the web. Select the image you like and download it. For instance you can download "Pharo3.0" -> "30587" which is the latest image as of today. Note that also the images from contribution CI are available. So you can easily download "Artefact", "Moose", ... images if you like. It will download the image into a specific directory somewhere in your users home directory. Each image gets an own folder. Use the "Show in folder" menu item if you want to open this location (may not yet work on all platforms) After download you can either "Launch" the image from the context menu in the right list. This will open the new image and close the launcher image. So you are ready to start working. What I do typically do is to "Copy" the image BEFORE I do any work and name it differently like "30587-MyStuff". Then I Launch the new copy and work with it, later throw it away or try that loading after commits works within new fresh images, ... Now === My HD is now much cleaner - all images are in a central place and I need only one icon/starter on the desk to open. PharoLauncher is also a very handy tool to download specific image update versions if you want to reproduce or fix Pharo bugs. I also associated one of the unused laptop keys with PharoLauncher - so the world of Smalltalk is just one click away... Things to know: =============== At the bottom there is a button to open a settings browser with specific settings for PharoLauncher. There is an option that enables the IDE again - so you can inspect the code or fix a bug. If it does not launch on your box then set a break in PhLImage>>launch to debug. Also note that it does not fit with the "Save as" image style - since each launcher image has to be in a new directory so far. So either use the "Copy" image, then "Launch" and then only "Save" in the target image or copy the "Saved as" image in a new folder and refresh the Launcher view on the right side. When you develop for it ======================= Either use the latest image from CI and enable the IDE as written before. You can also download the latest also in a Pharo 3.0 image. Just use the ConfigurationOfPharoLauncher from http://smalltalkhub.com/#!/~Pharo/PharoLauncher Then evaluate "PharoLauncher open". Hi Joachim, I have a sqlite library in /usr/lib named 'libsqlite3.so.0.8.6'. This directory is of course in the path. I made a copy of this library in my pharo2.0/bin directory and changed its name to 'libsqlite3.so' and it fixed the problem ! So I got it thanks to your help and a little luck. Depending on the linux distro this library name would differ. Somebody knows where it is defined in the image ? Hi Michel, I am neither a Pharo nor a sqlite expert, but I would guess the sqlite library is not in your image directory or you are starting pharo without setting the PATH to a location that contains the sqlite library. Then given this distance and a tolerance to zero you decide if the mouse position is more or less on your path. I recommend you to go with Spec. It is the newest and designed to be the most capable. It is also the way forward, it will be the 'standard' GUI builders in the future. We know that the documentation right now is far from optimal. Ben and I will work on that in January. Hmm, I think it is more comfortable to select packages and run all the tests. Within the test runner you have to filter for packages than select all tests, than if you add a TestCase you have to mind to select it because the tool does not automatically add the new TestCase in the tests to run. I think that select packages and hit test run is faster and cozy. Help with SQLite3 package

Hi pharoers, I am a newbie with Pharo. I installed the SQLite3 package in the Pharo2 image with the MetacelloConfigurationBrowser and tried a test with this script : db := SQLiteConnection fileNamed: '/home/michel/base_CD/BaseCD.db'. resu := db executeQuery: 'SELECT * FROM T_album'. resu inspect. And I got this error : External module not found. I am on Fedora linux and I think that I should give somewhere (in SQLiteReference class ?) the address of the libsqlite3.so file. Am I right ? We actually need to take PolyMorph and Morph an restructure the package -> extensions of Polymoprh need to be moved to Morphic -> the widgets of both PolyMorph and Morpic needs to be moved to a Morphic-Widgets package -> everything needs to be cleaned up. Scaled PNG image

Hello, In Pharo 2.0 (true in 1.4 as well), it looks PNG bitmap are wrongly rotated or scaled when they contain alpha transparency. In the example bellow with the joined bitmap, the alpha gray color are rendered darker when the imagemorph is scaled or rotated. How to discover which test fails (pharo 2.0)

Hi! I'm on Pharo 2.0. When I run a bunch of tests I usually select a lot of packages from Nautilus and click cmd-t to run them, but unfortunately if one test fails, only a yellow box in the lower left appears and it's time consuming to look for which test fails in which package. I'd love to have the good old dialogs with all the failing tests. Is there a way, in the configuration, to have them back? If your sockets are connection oriented (it is. TCP) using IP Multicast won't be an option. Multicast was made with Datagrams in mind instead of Packets. optimizing io

Hi all! Im making some performance enhancement on PhaROS, i realised that one of my common scenarios is having several sockets that should receive exactly the same information, in order to do that, im using n calls to the vm, which does n system-calls. I was wondering if there something done in: - send the same data to all the sockets in just one primitive - send the same data to all the sockets in just one syscall. I checked around in google but i didn't found anything useful, but probably i have no knowledge about the proper words for such search :). Thanks!

Esteban, good point. I use Tests sometimes as a mixture of design help and living documentation. And there, test cases almost never match classes 1:1. And I also think that is a good thing. Especially when it comes to refactoring and major redesign where the API of some entry points to a certain functional unit must not be changed. One could now start a new discussion on whether this use case is "unit testing" or now, but I guess we can be glad when people write any kind of test ;-) Not every thing that should be improved can be improved by changing tools. IMO, you're talking about functional tests, not unit tests. While a unit test is done in isolation and is concerned with one "unit" (typically a method), an acceptance test tests a feature of your application that will typically crosscut many units. I don't like having the Unit Tests so coupled with the code. Many times I implement Unit Tests that doesn't match 1:1 with a class. Agreed. And the more I use Pharo, the more I am looking into tests (especially "Debug Test" to understand how things do work) and writing tests first. That's not a natural thing to do in other environments but feels so great to do in Pharo. (Writing this after having looked at a ton of Seaside and Magritte tests :-) ). The image isn't regular when it comes to tests with some things being Tests-XXX at the end and KernelTests-XXX for example. And for my project I do have Project-Tests-XXX which keeps them close to the project categories (otherwise, I have to scroll too much [groups: good!]). It also helps to put everything in a single Project-XXX package when needed (which happened). BTW, how can one use the "Autotest" feature I saw demoed somewhere? Is that Moose-related? Hi, the good thing about the current practice of putting tests into another package/application is that you can separate them from your actual code for deployment (packaging), but you can also add them to your deliverable. If you mix code and tests, there may be good points about that, but in the end the limiting factor is the developer's discipline/motivation. And to some extent the quality of tools. The current state of test runners in most Smalltalk environments is not too bad. So I guess we need to educate people more towards writing tests, not change the place where they belong. Putting tests somewhere else than other Smalltalk's do would also start build hurdles to portability of tools between them. Would be a pity, wouldn't it? I had never heard of Phexample - so many interesting projects, so little time! - I like the approach of building on tests. Do you know if this will work in Pharo 3? I stumbled across this idea when Markus Gaelli chose it as a PhD topic about ten years ago (man, I'm old). The main idea was not to provide tests, but examples that happened to have assertions. The goal was twofold: (1) provide live documentation with real objects, (2) provide another way of composing tests. The project did not really come to fruition, but I still think this is highly interesting topic. Pyret: adding tests directly into classes

I have just come across the Pyret language. It looks interesting, but the part which particularly caught my interest was the way that they had built the unit tests directly into the classes, rather than having separate test classes. I think this is an interesting idea. It seems as though it would be easier to manage writing tests if everything were in one location. And this - might - mean that people were more likely to write tests. Has anyone else looked at this, and have an opinion on whether it would be a good addition to Pharo 4/5/X? Cheers Andy

In the multi language demo of QCMagritte, a magritte visitor is used that changes all label:, checkboxLabel:, comment: and group: sends in descriptions to automatically use a multilanguagestring. The parameter is used as the key. All unique keys are collected. The default translation is the key. That is used for missing translations. Languages can be added on the fly. The demo has a simple UI to directly add and change translations. The whole translation table can be written to csv, and read back. This is not shown in the video Stephan Verstuurd vanaf mijn iPhone
