I think one of the regular Linux users might be better placed to answer, as this relates to UX issues. Internally, Pharo uses Unicode. UTF8 is one of a list of possible encodings (and the most used one for non ASCII). What happens when you paste from the system clipboard to Pharo is some kind of import, propably with conversions going on. This necessarily depends on the VM and OS. On Mac OS X this seems to 'just work' as expected. In your case is seems to fail. Anyone better placed to help Jon ? Sven

I'm using the latest Cog build on the latest pharo 1.3 build on linux with ubuntu system fonts loaded and am using in pharo the same font as my gEdit text editor which displays correctly. Anyone know why this error occurs or why the fonts show up as question marks. I am trying to consider using pharo for some Chinese projects and need to ensure all string throughout pharo respect UTF8 well. Is the smalltalk code also stored in UTF8 form? Announcer question

Hi, in the pharo book, morphs unsubscribe to an announcer in delete for garbage-collection, but what do i do, when a morph is not explicitely deleted, but its owner? i have mypanelmorph that subscribes to an announcer. it has a tabgroupmorph as its owner, which has a panelmorph as its owner, which has a systemwindow as its owner, which has a model, that knows absolutely nothing about mypanelmorph, but occasionally deletes panelmorph. is there a method in mypanelmorph, where i could put the unsubscription in, that would be called, when panelmorph will be deleted? werner

I'm not sure what to expect with UTF-8 encoding in Pharo. Can someone point me to some docs or past discussion? I have tried this today in pharo 1.3: 1 - in a workspace: cnString := ''. 2 - Now I go to Firefox and copy 4 simplified Chinese characters and try to paste this in between the quotes of the smalltalk string in the workspace. 3 - the paste operation throws "Error: Invalid utf8 input detected" The web page I'm copying from is utf-8 encoded. I can copy text from this page and paste into vim or gEdit just fine. The error is thrown by UTF8TextConvertor>>errorMalformedInput I would provide a stack trace...but being new to pharo, I'm not sure how to grab such a report without doing a screen capture. thanks, Jon

In the meantime, I am wondering if the idea of having a tool that extracts a complete Configuration from a repo isn't helpful for more scenarios than the one I've mentioned here. In most companies, you have to hand the complete source code of a specific product version into a special version control system, so an extract of a repo that includes a complete ConfigurationOfXXX with all required packages in their specific versions is exactly what's needed for this. Mariano, I can download the mcz's using a web browser, but not from the Pharo Image. This has nothing to do with Pharo, but with the way the web proxy is set up here - it's a policy of the company. The same problem applies to any other application that's not accepted by the Proxy. I don't have the proxy settings due to the company's policy, so I cannot tell if I have a Pharo problem. Let's assume my machine is offline or I have too little bandwidth to download packages, but I can get them on a CD or USB stick, and I'd have the very same situation. BTW: I am using 1.2.1 at the moment Joachim

Why #fetch: cannot work behind a proxy? I didn't understand when he said "I can, however, download packages using the Browser" which browser? firefox or monticello browser? Why you #fetch: cannot go behind proxy if the proxy settings are defined in the image? There was a bug with Pharo 1.3 about this but it was fixed in latest version. because the changes formats does not support a declarative format (I'm dreaming of and that could be based on ring). So the current implementation fits everything in doit so the tools would have to scan expressions to identify the corresponding actions... I hope that one day we will be able to fix that. Joachim, You are on the right track with using fetch in an image that is outside the firewall ... zip up the directory of mcz files and you are off to the races. BTW, you don't need an "empty" image if you set ignoreImage to true before doing the fetch: version ignoreImage: true. Using SqueakSource / Metacello "offline"

Hi there, I need to load packages from SqueakSource into an image that sits on a machine behind a proxy that won't let me download from Squeaksource. I can, however, download packages using the Browser. The problem for me is that ConfigurationOfSeaside30, for example, requires a lot of packages to be loaded first. So I know I can donload all the .mcz files from Squeaksource and copy them to my local PackageCache, but I am looking for a way to find out which ones I need. Is manually extracting the info from the ConfigurationOfSeaside30 class the only way to do that? And how would I go about using ConfigurationOfSeaside30 to use my package cache instead of the online repositories? Any ideas? I did as suggested and downloaded latest cog.zip from https://pharo-ic.lille.inria.fr/hudson/job/Cog%20Unix/ I stubbled about the PharoOneClick1.3.app directory structure. But how do I tell which VM it is as I see the executable in all one-click download scripts such as PharoOneClick1.3.sh referencing squeak or squeakvm, yet the cog.zip file names the executable 'CogVM'?? So I see under Contents/Linux a few .so files that are also in the cog.zip I download. I see that libFT2Plugin.so is in cog.zip but not in PharoOneClick1.3.app/Contents/Linux. So I try copying this over in the hopes that the FT in the file name alludes to FreeType. But no luck. Any more ideas?
