[ANN] humane-assessment.com

by Tudor Girba

Hi, I am happy to announce the new home for humane assessment: http://humane-assessment.com Humane assessment is a new software engineering method for making the assessment of software systems practical and manageable. This is made possible by the Moose analysis platform. The core idea is quite simple: build custom analysis tools to analyze the contextual complexity of your software systems so that you can make better decisions. By decisions I mean anything that has to do with the system: it can be technical (such as, is this concept well encapsulated?, or is my component used the right way?), or it can be broad and strategic (such as, should I refactor my system?). To make it practical we need to be able to craft tools (sometimes complex tools) fast. This is made feasible by Moose, and in turn, Moose achieves this because of Smalltalk. The method also covers process and organization-related problems. If you wish, humane assessment is the coat that can place Moose and Smalltalk within any development team. If you want to promote Smalltalk, perhaps you might want to use this path. I would be happy to provide more information, support and even materials. Cheers, Doru -- www.tudorgirba.com "Be rather willing to give than demanding to get."

"that the way to find the selection is by asking the model, not the tree" - is this really what you mean ? If so, I will try to get to work on documenting this as most Smalltalkers from non-Morphic might also not find that obvious. Which objects need to know "selection" should be based on the behavior/services they publish as their messaging protocol. Smalltalk oor not. Or not? I am looking at a new grid/worksheet implementation on sourceforge.net for an OOP language with Traits used in Japan with observer pattern. Without their demo code + docs, there too a new programmer would spend days trying to see what was intended for use in practice in real-world app's and with good performance for large data sets. Even in the corporate world of Java on the web app server, there are third-party vendors of grid wdgets licensing their source for sale $$$ - how many years after Visicalc ? And often in JavaScript frameworks or libraries or mix of both. Veyr impertant: document your own sucesses !!! because in 12 months you could be back scratchig your head about what you achieved and why you did it one way and not another .. COBOL was supposed to be self-documenting - and proved a maintenance nightmare (huge backlogs of simple change requests at banks, insurers.) After years maintaining and adapting legacy Smalltalk of 3 dialects n large USA corp's I believe: 1) Smalltalkers really believe that short methods are self-documenting 2) that the debugger reveals INTENT 3) that tests may now be first, but docs still remain last 4) managers know to ask for all tests to run + test coverage data - but do not try to read the docs let alone ask an outsider to form an opinion of whether the docs capture the intent I.E. dos are still not peer-reviewed. As Turing warned Wittgenstein - we don't want bridges that collapse in an applied science. Bridges are now far more reliable and sophisticated than most business software - yet the "grid" or worksheet or spreadsheet is core to a great deal of business software as is the bridge to the infrastructure of logistics in national economies - even some "islands" ! a tree alongside a grid was in Visual Smalltalk Enterprise back in ??? a tree is not quite there yet for Google Mail for the ChromeBook ;-) R Alan Turing: Yes, but some bridges may collapse. I have what is quite acceptable as a grid using the SimpleGridExample. I also have figured out that the way to find the selection is by asking the model, not the tree. I have spent the last two days working on building a model in small talk of the problem domain. WHen I'm writing brand new code, I feel like I'm reasonably productive. It's when I have to try and start figuring out how to interact with the class libraries that my productivity plummets. The problem is to understand the libraries you have to be able to read the code, because there is no documentation. But reading the code in Smalltalk mean you have to know the language, the idioms in the language and how to successfully use the tools. That's a lot of learning curve. I have a reasonable first pass of the model working well now. Not complete, but good enough to be able to start looking at how to implement the UI. The problem for me is finding the code examples to look at. I spent a fair amount of time searching through squeaksource. I've been spending hours looking over the few examples in Morphic-MorphTreeWidget-Examples I'm more than wiling to try and expand the pool of examples as I start to flesh out what I'm doing. The pharopod casts have been extremely helpful. Tony On Jun 18, 2011, at 2:49 AM, Stéphane Ducasse wrote: > I understand your frustration. > It is mine too. You can't bring me down: a kind of meta message

by Stéphane Ducasse

Hi guys I was thinking after the discussions I got with igor about the efforts we spend on the build servers and vm infrastructure: sometimes we/you have a vision and a good one but people do not get it or do not follow or are busy and do not get that if they would spend 5% of time doing little things then you would not lose your faith or days of work. Yes this is like that: for example igor fixes are not included in VM code. This happens. So may be one of these days we will have to think about what we really want for VMs and do it. Now you should not let people get your vision down. This is too important and fun when your vision is cool. So tantalizing...

by Tony Giaccone

Every time I look at smalltalk, I'm blown away with how cool it is to work with and each time I try to get started, my efforts are stymied pretty quickly. I understand message passing, and I understand the basics of the syntax, but I'm having a very hard time understanding how to use the class libraries. I am trying to build a very small app. A simple data editor and browser. I've been able to follow an example in the code (simple grid example). I can now display my objects in a window, with four of the attributes listed in the editor. Now I can select an time and change it in place in the list editor but that change doesn't make it into the "database" (my ordered collection). It is not clear to me at all how to select a line in a MorphTreeMorph. Nor how to save the change when the user tabs out or hits return. Any help would be appreciated. Tony

Would someone please create that PBE image. Many young innovators think Smalltalk has NOT been used for years - and they have inexpensive Linux netbooks with enough RAM and SSD capacity - everything we lacked when Smalltalk was a choice versus C++ ... and then versus Java. I meet international MA students in CS here and recent BA grads (many are international students going home now) who really think Smalltalk was some research experiment at Microsoft or Apple ... and certainly never used by a bank or an insurance company or a natural gas trader or grain futures trader and definitely not by a telco. They are unaware of the connection of Ruby to ST let alone JavaScript to Self and if they have heard of Traits, they were invented in Scala not Self ... they have never heard of Alan Kay or Dan and the young women have never heard of Adele G. Hi. There was a change in the last years in Pharo and we have a new VM called CogVM which is the default since Pharo 1.1.1. So, Pharo 1.2.1 one click may probbaly be using a CogVM. CogVM cannot open "old" Pharo images. I guess, that PBE.image is an "old" Pharo image, say 1.0, and hence, cannot be opened with a CogVM. So....you should try a non-cog VM. For example, you can try the same you did but with http://gforge.inria.fr/frs/download.php/27303/Pharo-1.1-OneClick.zip Or...ask if someone can recreate a new PBE.image cog compatible. Good luck. I run Pharo on Linux and tried to start Pharo with the PBE.image, that is offered as an add on to the Pharo by example book. I copied PBE.image and PBE.change to Pharo-1.2.1-OneClick.app/Contents/Resources/ (where pharo.image and pharo.change reside as well) and changed the last line in pharo.sh from "$ROOT/Contents/Resources/pharo.image" to "$ROOT/Contents/Resources/PBE.image" When I start the shell-script nothing happens. What is wrong with my experiment. With pharo.image pharo starts properly. I tried to change the setting in pharo.ini from pharo.image to PBE.image as well. No success! What is wrong? We already have this in Fuel and it is called #fuelAfterMaterialization 2) #objectForDataStream: refStrm This message is sent once the object is going to be written into the stream, at serialization time. The idea is that an object may not serialize itself as it is but something different. Most of the times, it is a DiskProxy, but not necessary. This doesn't go with the idea of Fuel, where the objects do not decide theirself how to be serialized/materialized but instead delegate to a cluster. 3) #applyConversionMethodsTo: objectIn className: className varMap: varMap This is for class shape changes. We will have another protocol. 4) #storeDataOn: aDataStream This message lets an object decide how to be serialized. *ImageSegment* a) #startUpFrom: anImageSegment Almost the same as 1). So....I am missing more? opinions? which of them are really used hooks? Thanks -- Mariano http://marianopeck.wordpress.com

Hi simon May be it could make sense to have a Pharo link and news... But this is up to you. May be you are not aware of our activity - some people told us that they cannot follow our pace. At least Pharo-cast. Squeak-fr does not really exist anymore, it was rename smalltalk-fr. As a side point, when setting up world.st I have been looking at options to better integrate the planet.smalltalk.org stream but so far I have not been able to find a way that makes it look smooth, the venus powered planet's styling is just too different. I even experimented using a Google Reader Bundle with planet.world.st but I still don't like the way that looks either. -- View this message in context: http://forum.world.st/planet-updates-help-needed-tp3600734p3601659.html Sent from the Pharo Smalltalk Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.
