[ANN] Aida/Web 6.2 Spring edition is out

Dear Smalltalkers, On the sunny side of the Alps we have a spring already, so let me bring a bit spring to you too with this new Aida release :) Fresh features from last month: - new event framework - unified JSON messaging (over WebSocket, Ajax, Comet) - pure JavaScript for Ajax, Prototype loaded only on demand - image based persistence - snapshot every hour - view active/logged sessions in Security - whitelisted IPs in Security - red 'browser not supported' warning on top of page And to repeat new features from Christmas beta: *Mobile* devices like smartpone and tablet support, with mobile device detection and special mobile CSS as addition to screen CSS, so that you can easily adapt your existing apps to mobile simply by overriding the existing CSS. *HTML5* support: Aida switches now to HTML5 by default and HTML5 specific features will be gradually added, WebSocket is there already, local storage and offline support comes next. *WebSocket* support for bidirectional communication between server and browser, as a replacement for Comet. WebSocket channel is now automatically open on the session with WebSocket capable browser. *JSON* messaging introduced to be gradually used as only message format in unified (Ajax or WebSocket) communication between server and browser *Widget forms" introduced, hierarchy of forms follow the hierarchy of standalone widgets, each widget can Ajax submit its own form together with subforms in subwidgets. There is now a continuously built One-click Pharo image (with new Aida preloaded and running) available via Download now button on http://wwww.aidaweb.si/download.html (thanks Pharo guys!). 6.2 is released on Squeak/Pharo and VisualWorks and it will be also avaiable on the soon to be released VisualWorks 7.8 CD. DateAndTime and nanos

I'm trying to find out how to get a date in iso8601 and a precision more fine grained than seconds. But looking at the time based classes I didn't find anything useful. The nanos value seems to be also zero. And the milliSecondClock seems only be useful to measure durations. What can I use to get this achieved? Norbert

Thanks - that's very informative. Especially interesting for me. Firstly I've been playing around with a similar example and was at least on the right track, though my several hours have only yielded half the solution so far :-) Secondly, and much more importantly, it has given me a bit of an insight into how real smalltalk developers work. I had never really understood the productivity gains that this environment can give you over and above all the other IDEs for other languages that I have used previously. windows/flaps not responding

Hi all, I'm currently teaching smalltalk with pharo1.1 on Linux to pupils (10th grade). Some of them are experiencing the following problem: After reopening their pharo-image none of the windows left open before nor the window-flap at the bottom are responsive to mouse-clicks. Wherever you're clicking on, the world-menu shows up. You can open new system windows though. These will behave nicely. Is there any way to reactivate the old system-windows and the flap? Unfortunately I discarded the buggy images. Essentially the pupils had been reading ProfStef-Tutorials and some workspaces and browsers opened. Markus

Hi Joachim, JNIPort sounds really great and I will test it. It is really great to have these kind of bindings. For your Alien problem on Cog, I also experienced some troubles with the library path. So I am pretty sure that the problem is on the Cog side. Perhaps the Alien plugin compiled in Cog. JNIPort 2.0 for VisualWorks, Pharo and Squeak is now available! JNIPort is a Smalltalk library which allows Java code to be invoked from Smalltalk. It acts as a bridge between the world of Smalltalk objects and a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) where Java code is executing. Stef, After re-reading, I'm not sure I addressed your question. My plan is to include file container classes along with the rest of the classes in my projects when I check them in to Monticello. That way the version of the external files and the compatible version of the source code is kept together. Of course, the file container content is opaque to Monticello and nothing like a diff tool would be useful in perusing versions of the external files unless it understood how to decode and uncompress the file container's contents. Hi Stef, It is quite simple really. (It had to be for me to figure it out.) First a class of the specified name is constructed. Then the files are read in, compressed with gzip and encoded into base-64 strings. Then a class method is created for each file that answers that string. The class method is named with a base-36 encoding of the file path in order to ensure a valid method name. A dictionary of the base36-encoded method names keyed by the file path is created and that is serialized with ReferenceStream, compressed, and base-64-encoded as well. A class method called #fileList is created that reverses the process to re-create the original dictionary. To restore a file, it is looked up in the fileList dictionary by its path and then the corresponding method is invoked to obtain the encoded content. The content is then decoded, uncompressed, and written to the file path. There are a number of class methods copied from TFFiler into the file container class that is created for such things as adding, removing, replacing, displaying, and listing the file container's contents as well as redirecting the file restoring to alternate destination. The created file container class contains a class comment that lists the contents of the file container. It is updated as necessary when files are added or removed. (I was actually glad to see FileSystem delayed, as I made heavy use of FileDirectory in TFFiler.) TFFiler: creates file containers to store external files in Monticello

I've published a tool I'm using called TFFiler. My problem was that I had a number of external files that were required for my Seaside web application. These were CSS, Javascript, and image files that had to be placed in a specific directory tree structure. When I moved my web app to another system, I always had to remember to reconstruct the external directory tree. Over time, the directory tree got larger and more complex. For deployment, I wanted the files to be served by Apache and not the Seaside ExternalFileLibrary. (ExternalFileLibrary was the most convenient approach during development.) This meant the directory tree should be moved to a location other than the Pharo Resources directory, which was the most convenient location during development. The current version of Monticello does not provide a way to save external files with a project. TFFiler addresses this shortcoming. Now when I load my project from Monticello the necessary external files are deployed automatically.
