OSProcess reading utf8 files

Hi, Reading an utf8 file with OSProcess results in some weird characters showing up. (PipeableOSProcess command: 'less /path/to/a/text/file') output. -> inspect the bytestring and get some non-ascii characters fucked up. Doing `less /path/to/a/text/file` in a terminal displays the file fine. That's probably something stupid on my side but I cannot get it working. Any idea ? Cheers, Francois

Something like XDV/Diazo/Deliverance in Smalltalk?

Hi, Me and a group of friends in a local hackerspace[1] want to intervene the interface of this Cynin site using the technologies of Diazo[2], Xdv[3] or Deliverance[4]. Seeing the way that views are wrote in Seaside I wondder if there is someway to make a similar intervention/integration of interface without touching directly the code a la Diazo/XDV/Deliverance but using Seaside/Zinc or some similar combination. VSE / VW migration to Pharo

Hi We want to migrate code from VisualWorks 3.0 to something else. It is a batch search engine so the GUI is extremely simple and could be rewrite from scratch. I tried the VW 7.0 but it is too costly (but it works perfectly fine with small adjusments in less than one hour). I installed Pharo and I am unabled to even load some code. I read that everything should be in the repository. Fine for the new code but what do I do with the "old" one ? I don't see anywhere to load a source file or a parcel file. I need some help. I also download Squeak, that I will try in the next days. The speed of execution is the main issue. Thanks a lot

The parser node classes in the Compiler package are quirky, they are not conveniently usable for code generation and manipulation. Better use the AST from the refactoring engine (http://squeaksource.com/rb,html) You might also want to use the AST-Compiler (http://source.lukas-renggli.ch/helvetia.html) to be able to directly compile the AST from the refactoring engine without going through source code. Hello everybody! I'm looking for documentation for the ParseNode class's hierarchy at the 'Compiler-ParseNodes' category. Does anyone know where I could find some? PS1: I'm working on a project where I need to do some runtime code manipulation, like creating AST Nodes on the fly and things like that. Seaside and Fuel

I am writing a Seaside application which will have a modest set of data to be persisted. I would like to use Fuel for the persistance, for its simplicity. I assume that Fuel will be a "load all data into memory" and "save all data back to disk" sort of a model. If so, I 'm wondering where I should do this in my code. I can attach the "load" to the entry page but the "save" is more tricky. Would it make more sense to attach these to start up and close down of the image? WAFile or link to file

Hi, I have a problem with WAFile, upload/download files. Of course i know this link : http://book.seaside.st/book/fundamentals/forms/fileupload but in my project I have to import/export all the datas and files and so I lose my WAFile objects So, is it possible to create a WAFile without the web interface (so without html uploadFile) or do you know how to make a link to an existing file on the server. can you help me ? best regards Renaud Vilain

Hi Offray, I'm afraid none of these would suite very well. The usual approach for a webserver in Pharo is to put it behind a Nginx/Apache/etc (as with your Rails or Zope). I don't know anyone who is using a Pharo server to load balance other applications but I'm maybe wrong. Hi all, I'm getting random "504 gateway error" answers from several sites (using Zope and Rails) that are served by Cherokee using a reverse proxy setup. This error is an open issue in Cherokee and has been reported and not properly patched since 2009: https://code.google.com/p/cherokee/issues/detail?id=504 I did choose Cherokee because of its easiness to setup and newbie friendly interface and character, but with this problem I'm thinking in testing another server, may be a Smalltalk based one that have similar characteristics and can serve sites in Zope or Rails also. I know about Comanche, Swazoo and Zinc, but I don't know which of them is better (making load balance and stuff like that) and have proper documentation about using it in combination with other software (Zope and Rails in my case).
