Brainstorming on the roadmap for first Pharo Consortium Engineer :)

Hi guys we have a roadmap for Esteban and we would like to share it with you. We have extra items that we would like to see fixed and we are welcoming your feedback/suggestions. Note this is typically the way we want to work with the consortium in the future: Build an initial roadmap and refine it based on the input of the community. - A website for the consortium registration (esteban is expert on that). - This is important for INRIA and for the visibility of the consortium. We should get new members :) - Integration with SmalltalkHub - Working on fixing bugs! - Debugger fixes - Continuous bug fixing. - Improving release process: faster, more people involved, simpler. - Working on metacello repositories for each distributions (everything is there but missing last bits) - Metacello tools - Automatic release validations - Automatic validation of fixes Now the free items with probably igor involvement - Multiwindowing support - Fully working multithreaded FFI with ***Documentation*** - Filesystem fix and integration - Integration of OPAL - RPackage integration Igor related - Ephemerons - Object format - VM branding - Use of new canvas - Event cleaning So we are waiting for your suggestions. Hi guys Since INRIA accepted to pay one engineer around the pharo consortium we will hire Esteban Lorenzano for a year. We are excited by that! I should do a lot of paper work but this is really cool. For the consortium we are working on it :) - Inria law oriented people are designing a "CAML" like consortium text. http://caml.inria.fr/consortium/ but simpler :). For pharo there will be no specific license just plain MIT. - Marcus is setting up a mailing-list and we will make public the names of the companies that are participating (if they agree). Hi Sean. I am not sure if I understood. You have data (some objects of your domain) and code (classes, methods, etc). I can understand that you use SandstoneDB for moving your data, but I am surprise if it can move code as well. Did I misunderstand you? Breakthorugh Porting to Latest Pharo

With Ramon Leon's simple image-based persistence, I now have one script that moves all my code /and data/ into a new image. Also, Pharo 1.3 with Cog Jit VM seems really fast at loading code. 1.3 crash and burn

Hi, I'm starting to think 1.3 isn't quite ready for prime time. http://picpaste.com/Pharo_1_3_crash-oRMNkNb8.png I had selected asBTreeItem and pressed the delete key. I've kept a complete copy of this 1.3 install directory if anyone wants to dig into this crash. I'm pretty sure this was from the single click distribution. Jonathan.

Hi. I was thinking about this thread. The described solution works pretty well, but something you should be aware (I think) is that even if it doesn't fail, the generated results could be different than the expected. What I mean is that if you want to load something which at a certain point you do not make explicit WHICH version of a package to load (say you are using #bleedingEdge, or #latestVerison, or you let some defaults for project references or empty version, etc), then Metacello may find a different version in the local directory than the one that exist in the "real/online" repository. To conclude...the resulting image will be always the same only if all versions of all packages are explicitly defined. I am right? The driver vm-display-X11 is a dynamic library, which is shipped by default with VM, there is _no way_ how VM could not find it. Oneiric gone bad

Just updated Ubuntu and now Pharo doesn't run. I have been working ok under Oneiric but then after getting the latest update Pharo no longer runs. If I drop into the terminal and try to fire up the VM I get the following: jeff@Roger:/usr/local/lib/cogvm$ ./squeakvm could not find display driver vm-display-X11; either: - check that /usr/local/lib/cogvm//vm-display-X11.so exists, or - use the '-plugins <path>' option to tell me where it is, or - remove DISPLAY from your environment. That doesn't mean the whole thing is that complicated. I never tried Nicks stuff but I'm sure in nearly all cases it will take 10 minutes to get going. If you just want to host a gemstone application and you are not in a hurry it might be good to wait a little bit. The gemstone guys are in the progress to integrate GLASS services into cloud foundry [1]. There you will be able to deploy your application and only that. You won't have access to the underlying operating system but that means you don't need to care. If you need to do more integration stuff on the machine than there are a few options. Nicks machine is the best right now IMHO. I myself have developed some scripts that help dealing with some setup things of GLASS [2]. And we are building a bootstrapp chain for a GLASS appliance where you could build your own machine from scratch [3] (which is in very early state and could cause more than 60 messages :) ). Hosted GLASS made easy?

Hi, I've been watching a thread on the Seaside mailing list about hosting GLASS on Amazon's EC2. It hit 60 messages (try this, doesn't work, try that...). I'm no sys admin, so I'd like to find cloud hosting for pharo and Gemstone that is easier to manage. I got Gemstone & Pharo running on my mac in just a few hours, but i'm sure that's a lot easier than a manual install on someone else's remote linux box with Apache etc. Is there a reliable cloud hosting environment where the GLASS virtual appliance might 'just work' out of the box? thanks. Hi. It looks like OSProcess (a dependency of Magma) is registering a class in the startUp list explicitly before ImageSegment (which was removed). This was already fixed in new version of OSProcess. Hence, ConfigurationOfMagma should be updated to use the new version of OSProcess. [pharo-users] Can't Load Magma in Pharo 1.3

Hi, I'm new to Pharo and Smalltalk in general. I'm trying to build a small blogging application using Pharo and Seaside. I've decided to use Magma for persistence, but I'm having some issues loading it in Pharo 1.3. I loaded Magma the usual way: Gofer new squeaksource: 'MetacelloRepository'; package: 'ConfigurationOfMagma'; load. (Smalltalk at:#ConfigurationOfMagma) project latestVersion load: 'Server'; load: 'Client'. ... and I was presented with a backtrace. Since didn't know how to get a full backtrace out of Pharo in plain text, I took a screenshot: http://imagebin.org/180559 I know this is not adequate, but I'm hoping someone can help me get Pharo to give me information about this issue in a more convenient format. When I told Pharo to abandon loading the package and then re-evaluated this: (Smalltalk at:#ConfigurationOfMagma) project latestVersion load: 'Server'; load: 'Client'. ... then everything went just fine. I even tried creating a Magma repository, which worked. However, some things were totally borked in my Pharo image. I couldn't get the System Browser to do syntax highlighting, for one. As you said, it is possible to embed temps into compiled method, but it is largely unused in system, and used only for doits. A couple of days ago I got it working in 1.3 with the native (non-dbx) postgresql driver. I basically did: Gofer new squeaksource: 'MetacelloRepository'; package: 'ConfigurationOfGlorpDBX'; load. ConfigurationOfGlorpDBX project latestVersion load: 'GlorpPostgresV2NativeWithTests'. I can't remember exactly, but it more or less worked out of the box. I did some patches for timestamp decoding and blobs, but these won't hit you right away. Sven

GlorpDBX

Hi, feeling particularly stupid right now. Been trying to get Glorp DBX working with Postgresql for the last 2 hours and I'm busted. It took me about an out just to find out how to load and configure things. ugh. It took me a while to work out I had to actually install OpenDBX (doh). So I have downloaded that and added the directory to my PATH. So I'm trying to run the tests and I get DBXFatalError: FATAL OpenDBX: Loading backend library failed. I know it's finding OpenDBX, because when I move the OpenDBX folder, I get a different error - "Error: External Module Not Found" from apiInitialize (and I can see it's trying to load libopendbx-1.dll). Part of my problem is squeakdbx.org domain expired on 09/27/11 and is now a godaddy parking page. double ugh. Anyone got any ideas? I'm running a fresh 1.3 using CogVM-Win-13307 install on Windows XP. Jonathan.

I haven't used GOODS for a long time, but it seems to me that fixing all tests is the first thing you would need to do. Up until now. :) There were a couple of test failures 1.testFlushAllRemovesAllUnreferenced - this was failure 2.testTwoDifferentShapesInDatabase - this was error. These seemed somewhat esoteric errors to me, so i kept going. All the DB sort of tests passed, which is what i was interested in. So ... I massaged my implementation to move from subclass to component (another learning experience :) and now GOODS is working. I'll do some more testing/playing/learning and report back. I picked GOODS because I wanted to get my brain into OO thinking, and it seemed more OO that other alternatives, but I'll look at GLORP as well.
