Brainstorming on the roadmap for first Pharo Consortium Engineer :)

Hi guys we have a roadmap for Esteban and we would like to share it with you. We have extra items that we would like to see fixed and we are welcoming your feedback/suggestions. Note this is typically the way we want to work with the consortium in the future: Build an initial roadmap and refine it based on the input of the community. - A website for the consortium registration (esteban is expert on that). - This is important for INRIA and for the visibility of the consortium. We should get new members :) - Integration with SmalltalkHub - Working on fixing bugs! - Debugger fixes - Continuous bug fixing. - Improving release process: faster, more people involved, simpler. - Working on metacello repositories for each distributions (everything is there but missing last bits) - Metacello tools - Automatic release validations - Automatic validation of fixes Now the free items with probably igor involvement - Multiwindowing support - Fully working multithreaded FFI with ***Documentation*** - Filesystem fix and integration - Integration of OPAL - RPackage integration Igor related - Ephemerons - Object format - VM branding - Use of new canvas - Event cleaning So we are waiting for your suggestions. Hi guys Since INRIA accepted to pay one engineer around the pharo consortium we will hire Esteban Lorenzano for a year. We are excited by that! I should do a lot of paper work but this is really cool. For the consortium we are working on it :) - Inria law oriented people are designing a "CAML" like consortium text. http://caml.inria.fr/consortium/ but simpler :). For pharo there will be no specific license just plain MIT. - Marcus is setting up a mailing-list and we will make public the names of the companies that are participating (if they agree). Hi Sean. I am not sure if I understood. You have data (some objects of your domain) and code (classes, methods, etc). I can understand that you use SandstoneDB for moving your data, but I am surprise if it can move code as well. Did I misunderstand you? Breakthorugh Porting to Latest Pharo

With Ramon Leon's simple image-based persistence, I now have one script that moves all my code /and data/ into a new image. Also, Pharo 1.3 with Cog Jit VM seems really fast at loading code. 1.3 crash and burn

Hi, I'm starting to think 1.3 isn't quite ready for prime time. http://picpaste.com/Pharo_1_3_crash-oRMNkNb8.png I had selected asBTreeItem and pressed the delete key. I've kept a complete copy of this 1.3 install directory if anyone wants to dig into this crash. I'm pretty sure this was from the single click distribution. Jonathan.

Hi. I was thinking about this thread. The described solution works pretty well, but something you should be aware (I think) is that even if it doesn't fail, the generated results could be different than the expected. What I mean is that if you want to load something which at a certain point you do not make explicit WHICH version of a package to load (say you are using #bleedingEdge, or #latestVerison, or you let some defaults for project references or empty version, etc), then Metacello may find a different version in the local directory than the one that exist in the "real/online" repository. To conclude...the resulting image will be always the same only if all versions of all packages are explicitly defined. I am right? Â¿QuiÃ©n es Gilad Bracha?, por ahÃ te suena el nombre... bueno, te suena porque es uno de los que estÃ¡ detrÃ¡s de desarrollo de Dart, el nuevo lenguaje de Google (http://www.dartlang.org/) Â¿Y quÃ© tiene que ver Smalltalk? Justamente Gilad Bracha fue uno de los desarrolladores de Strongtalk (http://www.strongtalk.org/) el Smalltalk mÃ¡s rÃ¡pido en su Ã©poca, que utiliza compilaciÃ³n adaptiva, Polimorphic Inline Caching (PIC), tipado de variables opcional, etc. Todas soluciones que ahora se estÃ¡n implementando en Dart. Este aÃ±o nos visita uno de sus mÃ¡s Ãntimos colaboradores, Vassili Bykov, implementador del UI de Newspeak, el Ãºltimo lenguaje en el que estaba trabajando. Pero no solo Smalltalk tiene algo que ver en lo que estÃ¡ sucediendo con Dart, sino tambiÃ©n en Ruby... Â¿escuchaste hablar de MagLev? Â¿TenÃ©s dudas sobre las bases de objetos? ya sabÃ©s donde podÃ©s obtener las respuestas. Pero por ahÃ a vos no te interesa nada de esto... por ahÃ cÃ³mo funcionan los lenguajes de programaciÃ³n o cÃ³mo estÃ¡n implementados no es lo tuyo, vos haces aplicaciones web y solo necesitÃ¡s que la infraestructura escale, persista informaciÃ³n rÃ¡pido, etc. Si ese es tu interÃ©s, tenemos un lugarcito para vos tambiÃ©n. Â¿Escuchaste hablar de GLASS? (http://seaside.gemstone.com/) Es la implementaciÃ³n de Seaside, un framework dinÃ¡mico basado en continuations para aplicaciones web usando GemStone! (http://www.seaside.st/) O sea, desarrollas una aplicaciÃ³n web como si fuese una aplicaciÃ³n desktop y tenÃ©s gratis la transaccionabilidad y persistencia a nivel objetos... y lo que es mejor, sin base de datos relacionales!!! Por ahÃ te parece una locura, por ahÃ te parece que no tiene sentido... te aconsejo que no saques ninguna conclusiÃ³n y no dejes de venir a escuchar a Dale Heinrichs, el encargado de este producto quien nos contarÃ¡ todos los detalles del mismo y cÃ³mo influye en los desarrollos web. Si aÃºn estÃ¡s leyendo y no fuiste al final de la pÃ¡gina significa que aÃºn no te convencÃ... hmmm, a ver quÃ© te parece esto: MOOSE ( http://www.moosetechnology.**org <http://www.moosetechnology.org>), una plataforma para hacer anÃ¡lisis de tus programas, no importa si estÃ¡n escritos en Java, C++, C# o Smalltalk, te permite ver visualmente el diseÃ±o de tu sistema no usando esos diagramitas simples de UML sino por medio de grÃ¡ficos especialmente preparados para reconocer rÃ¡pidamente algunos errorcitos que por ahÃ tiene tu sistema :-). Tudor Girba, desarrollador de esta plataforma vendrÃ¡ a comentarnos cÃ³mo funciona, cÃ³mo estÃ¡ desarrollada y quÃ© podÃ©s hacer con ella puesto que ademÃ¡s es gratis! Te comento que este es el segundo aÃ±o consecutivo que el congreso tiene una secciÃ³n completamente dedicada a la investigaciÃ³n, con un comitÃ© evaluador envidiable y con publicaciones en journals. Por lo tanto, si te interesa hacer investigaciÃ³n con objetos y necesitas que tus publicaciones sean en congresos reconocidos, te comento que Smalltalks es uno de ellos. Y no me quiero olvidar de la docencia universitaria... Smalltalk sigue siendo el lenguaje utilizado para enseÃ±ar objetos en casi todas las universidades y no para enseÃ±ar meramente un lenguaje de programaciÃ³n comercial. Â¿O sabÃas que el layer open source para comunicarse con base de datos relacionales desde Pharo o Squeak mÃ¡s usado tambiÃ©n fue desarrollado por argentinos? o que el framework de serializaciÃ³n de objetos opensource Fuel tambiÃ©n fue desarrollado por un argentino? Te suenan Mariano Martinez Peck, Guillermo Polito, MartÃn Dias, Esteban Lorenzano entre otros?, ellos son parte de nuestra comunidad y nos recuerdan constantemente la muy buena capacidad tÃ©cnica que tenemos en nuestro paÃs. TambiÃ©n es argentino el arquitecto de la VM de Smalltalk mÃ¡s rÃ¡pida que hay, la de VisualWorks (http://www.cincomsmalltalk.** com/main/products/visualworks/<http://www.cincomsmalltalk.com/main/products/visualworks/> **) y le podÃ©s preguntar cÃ³mo hizo para acelerar hasta cerca de un 70% el GC en el Ãºltimo aÃ±o, y vas a poder escuchar una charla de un argentino que es smalltalkero hace mÃ¡s de 20 aÃ±os... Â¿te imaginÃ¡s cÃ³mo serÃa tu productividad si estuvieras trabajando hace mÃ¡s de 20 aÃ±os en el mismo lenguaje? Â¿un lenguaje que ademÃ¡s sigue dando mucho a nuestra profesiÃ³n?... Esta gente es parte de esta gran comunidad y tambiÃ©n participarÃ¡n de este maravilloso evento.... este congreso no es solo importante por la gente que viene sino por la gente que ya estÃ¡! The driver vm-display-X11 is a dynamic library, which is shipped by default with VM, there is _no way_ how VM could not find it. Oneiric gone bad

Just updated Ubuntu and now Pharo doesn't run. I have been working ok under Oneiric but then after getting the latest update Pharo no longer runs. If I drop into the terminal and try to fire up the VM I get the following: jeff@Roger:/usr/local/lib/cogvm$ ./squeakvm could not find display driver vm-display-X11; either: - check that /usr/local/lib/cogvm//vm-display-X11.so exists, or - use the '-plugins <path>' option to tell me where it is, or - remove DISPLAY from your environment.
