A point about pharo: the red line

Hi pharoers We want to stress something that may seem obvious for us but that can may be not for you and that people attending ESUG could discover live :) lucky them :) But you will be able to watch the video and get an idea soon. What is important is that it can explain a lot of our actions and future actions. Here is a list of statements that I tried to make short. - We do pharo because we want to create an ecosystem for companies and research/innovation. - We don't do pharo for fame and fans else we would do ruby or hard-rock. :) (ok probably ruby) - We want to build a powerful open-source community. - Every single node in the community is important. So yes you doing your little project in your corner you are important. Why? Because a community is a synergetic beast and we are all cool because the community is cool. So you are also important to us. For example if you want to give a lecture on pharo, we can help. if you want to do presentations, we can help, if you have problems/ideas let us know. - Often we do actions not because we want credit but just because somebody has to do it: seaside book, esug are to other examples of why we did pharo. Because we need a power rocking hyper cool beautifully designed system. (I know some of you think that I'm lousy and I use too much cool but this is what I mean) - We believe in strong elegant beautiful infrastructure: fix the stuff so that you can go faster to build the next one. We did that with Moose: offer to software engineering researchers a foundation to focus on problems versus rebuilding each time a clean source code meta model and importer. Infrastructure will give us the leverage to build the next generation. Stef and other pharoers

Support for SCIM on Linux

Hi I'm trying to input Tibetan (i.e. Unicode) characters using the SCIM input method (Wylie tibetan aka EWTS) on Ubuntu (10.4). (N.B. That's not the same as a different keyboard layout!) SCIM works ok for OpenOffice and even for gedit, but not in Pharo, ie it is installed correctly and working. I suspect it's because Pharo consumes the keyboard input directly, and doesn't let SCIM do its stuff (essentially aggregating keystrokes before sending the unicode on to application). It would be nice to hear from a) anyone who's got this to work in Pharo, or b) someone who can confirm what I suspect. The equivalent works fine on Mac! Community in the IDE

Hi, an idea I haven't found the courage to implement but may not be hard and can have an impact (at least fun to code). - Write / put a chat server on seasidehosting|INRIA|whatever - Pharo image includes a chat client per default - uses Author as nickname So as soon as we open an image we are connected to other users. Can be interesting in courses as students are directly connected to *real* developpers while learning (and students love to chat :). So we can exchange snippets instantly, ask questions, ... I didn't realized that I can install the VM seperately :-) I really like the way of programming with Smalltalk/Pharo and I like the intelligent IDE (although I'm a die-hard vim-user ;-))... If you are using a one click image, you can access the virtual machine by opening (show package contents) one click and you can access to the vm. One click are just to help people getting started. Let me know if this is working and if this solving your problem. Now I really suggest you to reload your code in the other image. Hi Marc, I'm basically in the same situation like you, I'm a B2B Java developer by the day and I'm using Pharo for personal projects at night. :) I believe it's best to install the virtual machine separately and just associate the .image files with it. (I've done this under Windows, under Linux I have squeak-vm installed from my distro and I just run squeak my-pharo.image.) Therefore whenever you open an image (with the coresponding .changes file available as well as .sources) - the vm will launch with it. Hello List, my name is Marc, I'm a programmer from Germany developing B2B PHP-Web applications as my profession. In my spare time I try to discover Smalltalk and I'm very impressed and somewhat overstrained about the big range of different Smalltalk distributions, tools and possibilities. So I decided to look at Pharo by reading Pharo By Example. I'm using Pharo on my Ubuntu-Box and on my MacBook, too. Now I'm wondering, how to load an previously saved image on Mac OS X? On Linux I copy & change the ./pharo.sh file. Is there any best practice to open such an image? There is no facility to open an image from within the Pharo-IDE. About pharo book localisation chapter.

In localisation chapter people are asked to reload their image to enable translations. I think that NaturalLanguageTranslator privateStartUp is enough. It might be worth to mention because it speeds up testing. -- Panu
