FWIW I hate this behaviour also. A number of IDEs do it too (Eclipse, Netbeans). I always turn this behaviour off because it infuriates me. Nice trick that, I see that it is very useful. But this is not made obvious to the user, so another 'surprising' behavior, i.e. not nice. Another alternative: would it be possible to have an open workspace in the default image that documents these ecompletion behaviors (with the possibility to turn it off by a DoIt)? It's not a bug, it's just that the default behavior annoys me in that it is difficult to write a single opening character, and sometimes when you want to delete one character it deletes 2 of them (especially annoying when you editing a String with quotes included). I just would appreciate that the default behavior be something that does not surprise the user, i.e. turn it off (which is what I usually do on new images). It may feel annoying at first, but it gets really confortable in (little) time. Selecting text and "surround" it with a pair of brackets/quotes/etc. is just great. The feuture that is bothering you really helps to type quicker and cleaner once you get used to it. Maybe... there could be some kind of shortcut to write just the opening bracket/quote/whatever without it's closing pair? For example, if I press *Shift+8* I get *()*. But if I press *Alt+Shift+8* I could get just *(*. Do you think that could be more confortable to avoid deleting the closing character? I type it once, I get two. I delete one of them, the other also dissapears. Resolving some dependencies...

Hi everyone! I'm trying to load a sar archive for Connectors into Pharo and I need to resolve some dependencies in order to do that. In other words, I want to port Connectors from Squeak to Pharo. It seems that Connectors dependes on several classes of Morphic and Etoys that don't come with the latest Pharo images. The dependencies I need to resolve are: - TileMorph - PhraseTileMorph - Presenter - Player - Vocabulary - SymbolListType - ObjectPropertiesMorph - GenericPropertiesMorph I already resolved the following dependencies loading the packages in this repository: http://www.squeaksource.com/PharoMorphicExtras - PartsBin - ObjectsTool - BookMorph - GraphicalDictionaryMenu I started browsing classes in Squeak to follow these dependencies, and the "dependency tree" seems kind of deep, so exporting classes from Squeak and importing them into Pharo manually feels kind of dirty, I always end up having to resolve *yet* *anoher* dependency... So I started looking for some Metacello configurations that could help me with this, but I just found ConfigurationOfPharoMorphicExtras, which helped me with some of the dependencies but not all of them. Are there any Metacello configurations that could help me with this, at least with some of the dependencies? Of course, for a new comer, that "easy" may even be difficut, so don't worry ;) But you can help with a lot of things, not only fixing bugs. The first thing I would advice you, is that if you want to collaborate in Pharo development, you should register in "Pharo Development" < pharo-project(a)lists.gforge.inria.fr>. This mailing list is mostly for people that just want to use Pharo. In such mailing list, you will see and keep track of all the progress, problems, etc. One of the things to do is to test for example when someone commits a change or a fix and ask for testing/feedback. Just someone to say "it works here" or "it didn't work for me" are perfect. The same when someone creates an issue. Just saying "I could reproduce" is good. Then, you can help us and make a better documentation: the website, the FAQ, Pharo By Exmple (http://pharobyexample.org/) and the last pharo book: http://book.seaside.st/ You may want to read, review, give feedback, etc. Another cool way of learning is writing unit tests. The one-click on windows does not like that we drop another image than the one it contains. What I suggest is that you install the VM which is inside the one-Click and use it directly. Intro and Invalid UTF8 message

Hi ... Ron Jeffries here. Long time (and long ago) Smalltalk user. Loving Pharo so far. However, I'm having some issues getting it set up nicely in Windows, especially Windows 7. I used the Windows one-click installer (and have also tried the zip file). Either way, Windows does not appear to recognize that Pharo is installed, so that when I try to set up a file association, pharo.exe doesn't get associated. (At one point, I did something that got it partly associated, but even then if i would click a .image file, I got a UTF8 error and the original image wound up opening.) It does work to drag a saved image onto pharo.exe. That's not quite as convenient as it might be but is livable certainly. Messing with sockets

Hello, I try to play with sockets in Pharo, and I encounter a strange error. Here is my code: |tempsock| Socket initialize. tempsock := Socket newTCP. tempsock listenOn: 12345 backlogSize: 4. We use HTTP to interact with the images from the command line (we have several hundreds images running on each server, so its a bit more convenient than using VNC ;). It is a combination of bash, curl and Seaside. On the image side we have a simple request handler that calls methods with arguments passed via query strings. From the command line we can do stuff like "cbfor beta-testers disableLogin", which sends the message #disableLogin to all images in the beta-tester group. To manage the VM processes we use daemontools (http://cr.yp.to/daemontools.html) and again various scripts to automate installation, configuration, version upgrading, etc. For monitoring we use Nagios, and Munin. Former also uses the HTTP interface to check images for their health. Hello, Is there another mean of remote administration than VNC? VNC is nice, but if your internet connection is slow or buggy, it becomes hard to use. Is there a project about a command line interface (ncurses like) for Pharo? Also, how do you manage a lot of VMs? Is there some sort of monitoring and administration interface I can use? (I think that question is mostly directed at the seasidehosting.st folks) I think I saw an ESUG GSOC idea about that ( http://gsoc2010.esug.org/ideas#h-116 ). Best regards, Geoffroy
