FFI Problems in Pharo 1.1 'Callout mechanism not available'

I'm having intermittent problems with FFI in Pharo 1.1. I often get my image to the point where I can only get the error 'Callout mechanism not available' whenever I call a DLL function. These functions have previously worked perfectly but then stop working for some reason. Anyone know what causes this and what the fix/workaround is ? The only solution I've found so far is to save my packages and load them into a new image which is a bit time consuming. Simple OO smaltalk question

I'm new to Smalltalk and come from the java world and am looking for a bit of help on how something should be implemented. Assume I have a Person class and that there are three subclasses of that class Admin, Teacher, Student. I also have a class called UserManager I want to implement a method on UserManger>> class firstPageForUser: user This method looks at the class of the user and returns an initial page for each user after log in. I have this method implmented: Person>>class firstPageForUser ^nil Now on the UserManager clas>> firstPageForUser: user (user isKindOf: Person ) ifTrue: [returnPage := ( (user class) firstPageForUser) ]. Which as I'm sure most of you realize doesn't work. I'm not sure how to structure the call so that the right message gets sent to the class. My understanding is that even though the subclasses don't implement this method yet, that the method should be passed up the class tree till it finds the method in Person. However, I also know that the syntax for the method I've written isn't correct. What I want to do is make the call on the class for each subclass. Hi, Unfortunately, I cannot help much at this moment. The problem is due to a bug in Pier that crashes when there is a strange character in one of the pages. Hi Lukas, Yes, the simpler method worked fine, I was confused by the fact that after typing the first digit in the #digit parser (it could be many digits but no alphabetical characters in that part) the sticky evaluator tolds me "punctuation expected". For now I just need to parse one identifier. In your example the #plusLazy: will only be able to consume the receiver once. So I was a bit annoyed about this behavior, because I still think it is a cool demo to show in class. So I had a poke around the system (Thanks Igor for pointing me in the right direction). What happens is that ImageMorph>>image: does at some point super extent: 2 * self borderWidth + image extent. where self borderWidth is an int. Now wait a minute, what does it mean, conceptually to sum an int with a point? I have no idea. So what are we doing here? Computing the extent considering the extra border size we have. So what we want to do is sum 2 points, now that does makes sense. super extent: (2 * self borderWidth) asPoint + image extent. With this fix, I can turn of coercion for Integers without any problem, fixing the original issue. Plus the behavior of ImageMorph>>image: is the same, as far as I can tell. Bonus: conceptually cleaner, more robust system, and the ability to do funky demos in class. See, I can do brain surgery, just not at the same time as teaching :-) (Marcus: this fix attached to the bug report, even though it is closed, just in case you consider it worthwhile ...) What i got instead, is an error, printed in emergency console saying that it unable to handle the system error .. the culprit is in ImageMorph>>image: while somehow relying on correct behavior of Integer>>+ and ImageMorph obviously used by Morphic rendering. So, its not crashing. Image is still responsible. You just broken UI with it: a toolbuilder, when creating a new Error popup window, also creates and initializing an ImageMorph as a submorph. And since it fails with error, the error-handling layer treats this as failure to handle error and thus, it switching to emergency console. Hi Pat, I'm not familiar with Markdown, but it sounds like you want to run an external process (Markdown), write to its standard input from Smalltalk, and read its standard input back into Smalltalk. Try using class PipeableOSProcess for this. There are some examples in the class side methods that show how it works. PipeableOSProcess works at a higher level than the classes in OSProcess, and it will handle the issues of connecting the external process to your image through pipes. Be careful about reading the output from your external Markdown process. Pipes by default work in blocking mode, see #setNonblocking to change this. If you do a read on the output of a blocking pipe, and if there is no data available, your VM will block and your image will be locked up.
