Actually - I've realised that there is a simple thing that would be helpful on the http://pharo.org/download page. Where it mentions the Zero Conf script and the Hacker Downloads section points to the "(Read the ZeroConf chapter on http://www.deepintopharo.com)" - it would be much more useful if they also mentioned there are docs on "http://get.pharo.org/" That would have fixed my problem.
