No I did not because I am in a fast local area netwrok. SSh documentation mention compression should not be used on fast LAN:
-C Requests compression of all data (including stdin, stdout, stderr, and data for forwarded X11 and TCP connections). The compression algorithm is the same used by gzip(1), and the âlevelâ can be controlled by the CompressionLevel option for protocol version 1. Compression is desirable on modem lines and other slow connections, but will only slow down things on fast networks. The default value can be set on a host-by-host basis in the configuration files; see the Compression option.
As you mention it, I tested it and it happens to improve the situation. So I guess the VM does not play nice with X server and may only transfer X pixmap over the wire, so the cost of compression will be lower than the cost to send hudge pixmap over the wire in this specific situation. You are using a compression protocol for X11 communication, I assume?
