I totally agree... some UI patterns are there for a reason. I really like the look of this IDE, the integration of the package/recently modified views, and also the classes and its extensions. honestly, for me removing the 3rd panel generates much more confusion. not the we shouldn't think on better ways to represent the information, but I prefer to have the protocol panel rather than a three, for example. I do the single tree with: - package group - package - extension - aClass - method - aClass - aClass class - protocol - method - comment - protocol - method I'm so accustomed to the way this reduces my work view to the things I need that I feel useless when working with Nautilus :) And no more class / instance toggle to boot, the ability to write an instance method while looking at all the methods on the class side, the ability to look at another class method names while writing a method, the removal of all buttons and toolbars, etc... I also like the fact I never have to remember that *package-name-test-thingy-whatever is the protocol name for the extensions of Package-Name-Test-Thingy-Whatever, and that I shouldn't get the name wrong! I think it is more difficult to navigate through a tree than by using the panels. It is why IMHO the file browser in NextStep and then in MacOS X are more usable than their counterpart in Windows. And it is why I love the way the code browser works in the Smalltalk environments. In Eclipse or other IDE (Netbeans, IntelliJ, ...), in order to being productive, we have to use hotkeys to find a given class or a given method because the browsing by tree is painful in an every day work. This is exactly my issue with Nautilus today. The list of packages is so long in the pane that you can only work by hotkeys. I designed the tree variant so that you could work without hotkeys (I hate hotkeys) and find back any package you're working with in at most three mouse clicks and no scrolling on a portion of a netbook screen, not a 30' Apple Cinema display.
