OpenGL would be a nice backend indeed. But the text rendering would be missing, in the OpenGLCanvas part of ROME, and would have to be taken from another library? When i wanted to add text rendering over OpenGL for Lumiere, i saw a couple of external libraries for freetype2 rendering. Just by curiosity, did you have something in mind regarding this?
