Ok here is piece of information (read the pdf :) you can look in EventModel on squeak source. Now on top of this change that is not yet in the image because we need to think more about it, fernando introduced a state pattern to manage interaction and I guess that this is really what you are looking for I would love to see if the solution propose by fernando works for you.
