And this is great to have a real layered system.

Indeed. Before this change:

1) Traits were not working without Ring and therefore we needed to include Ring in PharoKernel 2) Ring was unloadable otherwise traits were broken

now we can unload ring if we want and moreover, we do not need it in PharoKernel. So, yes, it was a good move.
