Others have mentioned looking at GNU Smalltalk (at least for a sane interchange syntax). I would also look at F-Script, particularly for Array Programming. You raise an interesting point. If we have a Smalltalk shell, does it make sense to have unix-like pipe (|) ? Maybe for efficiency.
