Yes, downloading fresh vm+pharo works (I was thinking I have a recent VM too -- sorry for adding to the confusion). I still have no problem with any of that. So you will have to be more specific : which image version, which VM version, which linux version.

For the purposes of this query, "working'' means that you can open a playground, type into the it, then backspace over what you've typed.
