why ?
Read it and you'll see. But the most important thing is that there is one place to find all the external packages which are "supported", or part of the base distribution but not bundled. It is in the image so it can be updated to keep it current. I think its better than the external repository (doesn't force a single repository). But read Andreas' message. He motivates the idea very well; cogently no less :)
