[Pharo-project] shortcuts in PluggableTextMorph

by Tudor Girba

Hi, I need a bit of help in trying to add some kind of shortcuts to PluggableTextMorph. The following code used to work for shortcuts like "CMD+o": (PluggableTextMorph on: textModel ...) onKeyStrokeSend: #keystroke:from: to: textModel; GLMTextModel>>keystroke: anEvent from: aMorph anEvent anyModifierKeyPressed ifTrue: [ "check the do the shortcut work" ] However, in the recent Pharo 1.3, if I press "CMD+o", first the "o" is added to the text as a regular character, and then keystroke:from: is executed. Is there a way of capturing the event before it gets interpreted by the Morph? Or is there another solution? Re: [Pharo-project] Python like generators for Pharo

Hi Max, See the Generator package in http://source.lukas-renggli.ch/continuations. IMHO, generators are pretty useless in Smalltalk though. [Pharo-project] Python like generators for Pharo

by Max Leske

Hi folks I've been reading a bit about Python generators and I think they're awesome. So I quickly looked for a Smalltalk implementation and found that GNU Smalltalk has one (http://smalltalk.gnu.org/blog/bonzinip/fun-generators) Now, I was wondering if there's an implementation for Pharo / Squeak (since I didn't find one on SqueakSource) and if not, if there might be any interest in one. If you're curious you should take a look at these: Generator Tricks for Systems Programmers - Version 2.0 A Curious Course on Coroutines and Concurrency http://www.dabeaz.com/generators-uk/GeneratorsUK.pdf Cheers, Max

Have you looked at <http://www.squeaksource.com/ZeroMQ/>? Perhaps it is what you are looking for. I haven't used it so I can't give you a advice if it is useful. [Pharo-project] Moose at GotoCon Aarhus / registration discount

by Tudor Girba

Hi, This fall I will give a talk at GotoCon Aarhus (Oct 9-14) on "Humane assessment with Moose": http://gotocon.com/aarhus-2011/speaker/Tudor+Girba GotoCon used to be named JAOO. It is a large industrial software development conference that might of interest to some of you. As part the speaker package I have the possibility to offer discounts to interested participants. So, if you want to go to GotoCon Aarhus and are interested in a discount of about 170 EUR, please send me an email and I will provide the promotion code. (In MVC talk) Either the view itself, or it's controller should be responsible for handling key events/shortcuts, not the model (In TextEditors case, Texts/Paragraphs). They may call methods of the model as part of that handling, but that's a different thing :) Cheers, Henry

Re: [Pharo-project] Zinc time outs too fast

Note that as far as I understand it, ConnectionTimedOut also applies to the situation where the other side simply does not start the conversation, like when trying to connect to the wrong port on an existing host. As things are now, timeouts are under the control of the client/user. There is a kind of global timeout ZnNetworkingUtils class>>#defaultSocketStreamTimeout that can be set globally with ZnNetworkingUtils class>>#defaultSocketStreamTimeout: seconds. The current default default is 30. This default is used by a DynamicVariable called ZnConnectionTimeout. This allows you to override the timeout on a per request / per process basis even if you do not have access to the HTTP client yourself (like with MC) where there are also options to change the timeout, of course. ZnConnectionTimeout value: 3600 during: [ ... ] will give you a one hour timeout. I am using that to actually shorten the default timeout ;-) If a server does not answer in 10 seconds, it most probably never will and I hate waiting. There currently is not option for indefinitive timeout, apart from something silly like SmallInteger maxVal or 52 weeks asSeconds. But do anyone really want to wait a year for a timeout ? Anyway, timeouts and other exceptions are just part of networking, the network is unreliable. Sven

Re: [Pharo-project] ZeroMQ support

by John Toohey

Maybe "enterprise" is the wrong word. I have a system with multiple servers, some in Java, some in Clojure, and the Console servers developed in Seaside running on Pharo. I need to have all these servers talk to each other, and today I'm using JMS over ActiveMQ to do that. I need to use Stomp as a protocol to allow my Console servers to push data updates to the main servers, and its fragile. It could be that my implementation is wrong, and you could advise on that. What is your experience in pushing messages from Smalltalk VMs to Java and C servers? Any help would be most appreciated. (My systems supports 200 end to end transactions per seconds, with many thousand concurrent transactions. It's deployed on 16 servers in an EC2 cloud) Why would ZeroMq be better? I have 20 year experience writing network servers, and to honest, I'm not even sure where to start with an answer to that question. Again, if you could help me out here, it would be most appreciated. Perhaps, your experience in developing large scale network applications, would be insightful here.
