Re: [Pharo-project] how to get a string read stream from filesystem

by Tudor Girba

Hi, Thanks. I know that the ByteArray is the data structure, but I would like to get a stream that decodes the information and lets me traverse characters, rather than bytes. By retrieving "aReference readStream contents asString" I first get all the ByteArray in memory, and then create another string from it also in memory. If my file is large, this is not a feasible solution. Like Norbert said, I would like to get some support to have a converter in the stream. For example, outside of Filesystem, we can do something like: FileStream readOnlyFileNamed: 'aFileName'. stream converter: TextConverter default. So, I guess, the only way right now is to not use the FSStream, but to get from an FSReference to the FileStream. Do, we want to bring the FileStream closer to FileSystem? Anyway, I agree with Norbert that a ByteArray is really the data structure that you should expect to get from a file. > > Cheers, > Max > > > On 17.11.2011, at 22:01, Tudor Girba wrote: > >> Hi, >> >> I am using Filesystem, and I would like to get a read stream that provides a string instead of bytes. >> >> If I do "aReference readStream", I get a FSReadStream which is a byte stream. >> >> To get to the string, I now do the ugly: "aReference readStream contents asString" >> >> Is there a cleverer way? >> >> Cheers, >> Doru >> >> >> -- >> www.tudorgirba.com >> >> "What we can governs what we wish." >> >> >> >> > > -- www.tudorgirba.com Things happen when they happen, not when you talk about them happening.

[Pharo-project] Startup Preferences

by Benjamin

Hi guys, I did a little project which allow you to save a st script on your HDD in a preference folder (~/.pharo#{version} for unix based machine, not yet defined for windows) and run it each time an image is open. You can also decide for each item if you want it to be run each time or only once. I use it to set my author name, change the fonts, set some settings, add my password in some repo etc The code is here: Gofer new squeaksource: 'StartupPreferences'; package: 'StartupPreferences'; load. You can have a look at StartupLoader class>>#example and StartupLoader class>>#example2 If you have comments or ideas (by example, what is the path for preferences on windows ? ^^), you're welcome :) Ben

Re: [Pharo-project] how should Pier file structures be serialized with Fuel?

I've not had to dive into Fuel's internals, so far. Anyhow, I've finally got the problems cleaned up. Mainly, I had to make sure that all references to the original root of the subtree, are replaced by a reference to a copy of the root. It needs to be a copy, because its parent must be set to nil, but that cannot be done to the original object. Other problems flowed from having to make a copy of the root. If you miss one reference, then that one reference will pull the entire kernel into the serialization. With the new code, I should be able to create new PRStructure or PRComponent, without having to add any custom visitor code (which I had to do with my old mapping strategy).
