Re: [Pharo-project] Athens work in progress: couple screenshots

by Fernando Olivero

Ah! So Athens is a facade, for a Canvas API, based on Paths, that could have a Cairo, OpenGl or BallonCanvas rendering engine as a backend. In the current case, using BallonCanvas (bit map based), i guess you are implementing the scalable fonts using the free type library? In Gaucho, i've done exactly that, i have a FontLibrary which acts as a cache for a particular font family, at a requested size. So when the canvas renders a string with a given font, it asks the library for the font at the current scale of the desired size. Although i prefer the abstractions that are present in Athens, and will try to use it instead eventually. Fernando pd: attached screen shot of Gaucho, using a scalable GCanvas (built on top of the free type lib and FormCanvas). Re: [Pharo-project] experience with large images?

It depends on the OS. The 500mb limit should be for Windows. Unix and Mac should be more (kind of 2gb). Search in the history a thread between Tudor and Igor about a windows VM with more than 500mb for Moose. cheers On Wed, Nov 23, 2011 at 6:45 PM, Alexandre Bergel <alexandre.bergel(a)me.com>wrote: > Hi! > > Apparently, without configuring anything, the Pharo image cannot go over > 500 Mb. > Can this limit be moved up, to, let's say, 4Gb? > > Cheers, > Alexandre > -- > _,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;: > Alexandre Bergel http://www.bergel.eu > ^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;. > > > > > > > -- Mariano http://marianopeck.wordpress.com

Re: [Pharo-project] object format of true, false, nil and others...

Hi: On 23 Nov 2011, at 22:59, Stéphane Ducasse wrote: > imagine that I want to bootstrap our nice kernel. > I will need to somehow create a new nil, true, false, instances of new classes Undefined, True, False. > Such instances will then be put on the SpecialObjectArray somehow. Something kind of related: When debugging the VM, I am happy that I always encounter the same object as the first object in the heap. It is some strange string (think it encodes an error message or so). However, my thought was, also for other purposes, would it be possible to have these special objects sorted to the beginning? Especially, the nilObj would be very handy to have as the first object. That would need special VM support to arrange it that way, but knowing the nilObj from the very beginning would allow my to initialize some of my hacks more consistently, avoiding C-level NULLs and runtime checks. Just an idea, vaguely related to the question. Would be interesting to hear whether there are any historical insights with regard to ordering objects in the image. Guess it is not done because nobody needed it. (and then there isn't really a primitive for it, and a moving GC might also be contra-productive, etc.) Best regards Stefan > > Stef -- Stefan Marr Software Languages Lab Vrije Universiteit Brussel Pleinlaan 2 / B-1050 Brussels / Belgium http://soft.vub.ac.be/~smarr Phone: +32 2 629 2974 Fax: +32 2 629 3525

[Pharo-project] object format of true, false, nil and others...

by Stéphane Ducasse

Hi imagine that I want to bootstrap our nice kernel. I will need to somehow create a new nil, true, false, instances of new classes Undefined, True, False. Such instances will then be put on the SpecialObjectArray somehow. Now I can create a dummy object playing such roles and then use SystemTracer to substitute my placeholder with the true nil falseâ¦. or another trick to swap them. Now anybody has other ideas? Stef

Hi! Apparently, without configuring anything, the Pharo image cannot go over 500 Mb. Can this limit be moved up, to, let's say, 4Gb? Cheers, Alexandre -- _,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;: Alexandre Bergel http://www.bergel.eu ^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;.

Re: [Pharo-project] [Zinc] ZnTooManyRedirects exception

by Jan van de Sandt

Hello Sven, Yes, this is exactly what I need. Thanks very much for the quick fix! I know that resuming the exception also works. That was the solution that I used until now. But the new solution is much nicer. Jan. Re: [Pharo-project] Building 32-bit Cairo library on Macs

by Schwab,Wilhelm K

I'm going to have to run down that dynamic library quote - I vaguely recall seeing it, but obviously need a refresher course. I *think* I know what he means by it. Though I will admit that when the boundaries are correct, libraries have their uses. All too often though, one ends up with (as here) myriad dependencies that don't seem to have any direct applicability and certainly make life complicated. However, AccesIO (http://www.accesio.com) makes a nice A/D board and they have a library that has been very helpful. The board is perhaps the only USB device, other than external drives, that hasn't been a major pain at some point. Get the firmware and rules installed correctly, and it just works.
