[Pharo-project] Following context execution

by Stéphane Ducasse

Hi I would like to write some tests about MethodContext and BlockClosure activation. To start I wanted to write a simple invocation and step in from context to context. I could manually annotate the code with thisContext and store the resulting contexts somewhere. But does anybody has some magic information so that I can reuse the debugger logic? Stef

Re: [Pharo-project] [squeak-dev] Smalltalk for small projects only?

But the point I think Lawson is making is that there has not yet been sufficient effort by anyone other than Craig to determine, for sure, what the exact feasibility of the Spoon system is. A MNU is too-trivial an issue to give up on the Spoon dream, given the potential leverage it could offer on the problem of building up from a micro-image.. On Sat, Jan 28, 2012 at 10:28 PM, Sean P. That should automatically teach beginners, bad "procedural" thinkers among Smalltalk programmers. Easy to implement, this. regards, Guido Stepken

Same Idea. "Don't do just things right, do the right things!" Means, the Pharo team has to invest into the port of Morphic to VS and VA to set Morphic AND indirectly Pharo as NEW STANDARD GUI in the Smalltalk community to enable programmers to start silently migrate complex applications to Pharo GUI, finally getting rid of license cost. There are lots of companies out there, who are paying hundreds of thousands each year for VA, VS licenses .... which better could be invested into Pharo + Morphic as Standard Smalltalk GUI AND COG VM or Lessers GVM. Re: [Pharo-project] [Seaside] loading Seaside 3.0.6.3 in Pharo 1.4

by Dale Henrichs

Esteban, If it were me, I'd isolate the specific changes in two new packages: KomHttpServerPortability.common KomHttpServerPortability.pharo14 existing implementation in the common branch and the Pharo1.4 changes in the pharo14 branch. I've attached a new version of the configuration that creates a new baseline and version with the necessary changes ... As other posters have mentioned #trimBoth could be used, but currently Kom does not depend upon Grease, so I would be curious whether other users of Kom would all of a sudden want Grease included in the image ... I'm not the Kom maintainer so I would choose to create the Portability package with the two branches as the the least impactful change ... TranscriptStream is currently not managed with Grease and it could be, but then Grease doesn't have any Pharo1.4 specific packages either (yet....)... My $0.02.. maybe, but he can restore default gcc after trying. I asked for removing a symlink, not the llvm compiler it self. [Pharo-project] Adding a message for handling disposable resources?

by Guillermo Polito

Hi! It's very common to have the same structure when handling resources that should be disposed after using -normally when they belong outside the image- like files, aliens, database transactions, mutex semaphores... *[ open the file do something with the file ] ensure: [ close the file ] **[ create an alien do something with the alien ] ensure: [ free the alien ] * * [ open the transaction do something with the transaction transaction commit ] ensure: [ transaction if open, transacction rollback. ] * Some times, this structure is abstracted in a high order method(?) using blocks.. *session inTransactionDo: [ "do something with the transaction" ] Semaphore forMutualExclusion critical: [ "do something with the semaphore ]* Ok, Python and C# add the *with* and *using* statement, handling the resource disposing in a polymorphic way block of code is executed, like: with aFile: #use the file or using (aDatabaseTransaction){ /* use the database transaction */ } Even in Java 7 they've included a construction for auto-dispose of resources: *try (BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(path)))* { return br.readLine(); } What about adding a polimorphic (for example) #releaseAfter: method like *Object>>releaseAfter: aBlock self retain. [ aBlock cull: self ] ensure: [ self dispose ] Object>>dispose "hook for disposable resources" ** Object>>retain "hook for resources which can be retained"* * Alien>>dispose self free **File>>retain self open* * File>>dispose self close Stream>>dispose self close Transaction>>dispose self isOpen ifTrue: [ self rollback ] * And so? this way resources can be handled in an uniform way. Cheers, Guille

And Esteban, I do not think that changing the systems default compiler just for a single program can be the recommended practice. "sudo rm /usr/bin/gcc" is certainly only the very last resort. It should not be advertised if there are other ways to use a supported compiler.
