[Pharo-project] SciSmalltalk

by Serge Stinckwich

Dear all, we already discuss about that in the moose and pharo mailing-list. Maybe this is too late, but please find a small proposal for gsoc 2012 below. ================================================================ Name: SciSmalltalk Level: Intermediate Possible mentor: Serge Stinckwich Possible second mentor: ? Description Smalltalk has at that time no equivalent to mathematical libraries like NumPy, SciPy (Python) or SciRuby (Ruby). The goal of the SciSmalltalk project is to develop an open-source library of mathematical for the Smalltalk programming language (MIT Licence). Technical Details The development of this project is to be done in Pharo Smalltalk, but the code should be portable to other Smalltalk flavors. Numerous Smalltalk projects provide already some basic functionalities (complex and quaternions extensions, random number generator, fuzzy algorithms, LAPACK linear algebra package, Didier Besset's numerical methods, ...). A first task will be to do an audit of all the existing projects that provide some mathematical stuff and build a Pharo Configuration to load them in a fresh Pharo Smalltalk image. After that, the student help by his/her mentors will decide what are the numeric algorithms to develop in priority. The student will need to know some basic numeric algorithms usually found in such libraries. Units tests should also be provided. Benefits to the Student The student will help the Smalltalk community in a very concrete way. The student will learn to design well-designed code with tests. Benefits to the Community Having a package providing more elaborate numeric libraries is really important to develop the use Smalltalk in new domains (robotics, high performance computing, computer vision, bio-computing, ...). The lack of numeric librairies hamper the use of the Smalltalk in a scientific context at the moment. An another goal of this project is to develop a community of people interested by these topic. [Pharo-project] Close encounters of the weird kind

by Schwab,Wilhelm K

Eliot, all, My GSL code, with callbacks is confusing me. First, I call gsl_multifit_fdfsolver_set(). This seems to work, hitting various callbacks (apparently successfully), but then gives an error with #'bad number of arguments'. I have looked, and don't see an invalid number of arguments anywhere. I can proceed past that(??), only to crash in gsl_multiroot_fdfsolver_iterate(). The C backtrace appears below. Is there anything I might glean from it? Any ideas? Bill C stack backtrace: /home/bills/Work2012/Pharo-1.3/CogVM[0x80968b1] /home/bills/Work2012/Pharo-1.3/CogVM[0x8096a52] [0xb7720410] /usr/lib/libgsl.so.0(gsl_multifit_fdfsolver_iterate+0x37)[0x759fc5a7] /home/bills/Work2012/Pharo-1.3/libSqueakFFIPrims.so(primitiveCallout+0x4b2)[0x75c682a2] /home/bills/Work2012/Pharo-1.3/CogVM(interpret+0x3f68)[0x808dcc8] /home/bills/Work2012/Pharo-1.3/CogVM[0x808fc97] /home/bills/Work2012/Pharo-1.3/CogVM[0x8090664] /home/bills/Work2012/Pharo-1.3/CogVM(main+0x38a)[0x809774a] /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6(__libc_start_main+0xe6)[0xb7580bd6] /home/bills/Work2012/Pharo-1.3/CogVM[0x805acc1]

Re: [Pharo-project] Problem with loading Nautilus after Seaside

thanks for the report. To me it looks like we changed some on classVar lookup and it is not modular anymore⦠Stef On Mar 27, 2012, at 11:16 PM, Martin Sandiford wrote: > Not sure where to report this, so here goes... > > As of just recently, I can't load Nautilus after loading Seaside due > to a name clash on "Bindings". [Pharo-project] Problem with loading Nautilus after Seaside

by Martin Sandiford

Not sure where to report this, so here goes... As of just recently, I can't load Nautilus after loading Seaside due to a name clash on "Bindings". It's a global in DynamicBindings-lr.13 (Seaside) and a class variable in Spec-Core-BenjaminVanRyseghem.9 (Nautilus). Ideally I think DynamicBindings wouldn't be putting a bare word symbol like "Bindings" into globals, but as it happens the declaration in Spec-Core/ComposableModel isn't used and could be removed. Cheers, Martin

Re: [Pharo-project] ProtoObject initialize

by Guillermo Polito

Now, re-initializing classes is kind of weird :P. I should only initialize classes with it's own #initialize and their subclasses -only if they have class instance methods :/. ufa On Tue, Mar 27, 2012 at 5:29 AM, Mariano Martinez Peck < marianopeck(a)gmail.com> wrote: > > > On Fri, Mar 23, 2012 at 11:03 AM, Noury Bouraqadi <bouraqadi(a)gmail.com>wrote: > >> Hi Guillermo, >> >> The expression "ProtoObject initialize" does actually work. >> ProtoObject metaclass inherits the initialize method from Behavior. >> But, running it resets the ProtoObject critical IVs (superclass, >> methodDict and format). >> Hence the hang. >> > > Exactly.
