You just beat me to it. The entity part was tricky. I was looking at the result of the #get:, trying to figure out what to do with the ZnLimitedReadStream... The above snippets successfully downloaded the files (I think), but there is something wrong with them. The png doesn't open (mac message about a damaged file) and the .gz doesn't uncompress (it just keeps making differently named .gz files). I stepped through it many times trying to figure it out. So, I think Nautilus was right. What I don't get it is how the descendent method wasn't called. > When it happens try to close the browser and to reopen it. > You can also use the DEBUG menu to flush the cache. I'll try that next time, thanks. ===Blake===

Re: [Pharo-project] [update 2.0] #20011

by Esteban Lorenzano

Hi Doru, I will quote something I hear here, and that I strongly believe: "Pharo is not an unusable set of classes, is the tool we use everyday , so it need to have inside everything we need". But that's not complete, to illustrate I need to quote another phrase: "Also, Pharo should be modular and everybody should be able to start from a minimal image and build on top". So, short answer: Yes, Pharo will have all of that inside, because we need it to evolve Pharo itself, and build a better environment. But long answer: You also will be able to take a really small part of Pharo (let's say Pavel's kernel for 2.0 and maybe hazelnut bootstrap for 3.0) and use metacello to build your own image, the size you want and the packages you need :) To support that, I'm already working on a metacello configuration for Pharo (Idea is to replace current release process with one based on metacello). Of course this will take time , and our objectives for 2.0 are ambitious, but previous releases of Pharo had been created enough bases to allow such a great step. For more details on what we are trying to accomplish, I posted another mail trying to enumerate them: http://forum.world.st/About-the-new-release-process-td4574410.html Hope this works as an explanation. How do I save this file to local disk? One of the key ideas of Zn for me was to offer a Smalltalk codebase where 'The source will be with you, always' would be true, like it should be true in Smalltalk as a whole. Yes, it throws an entity too large exception, to protect you (or your server). This is a feature ! Open the debugger and you'll see how it is using ZnConstants>>#maximumEntitySize, go look there and lo and behold there is a setter to modify this limit. Furthermore, the ZnEntityTooLarge exception is proceedable. Apparently the download is about 40Mb. So it is possible to get to the ByteArray in an Inspector and do whatever you want, like save it manually. But it would be better to do this in a streaming fashion, like Igor said and save it directly to a file. This should work: FileStream newFileNamed: '/tmp/cog.tgz' do: [ :stream | | entity | stream binary. entity := ZnClient new streaming: true; get: 'https://ci.lille.inria.fr/pharo/job/Cog%20Git%20Tracker/lastSuccessfulBuild…'; entity. entity writeOn: fileStream ] The entity is actually a ZnStreamingEntity (have a look at its #writeOn: method). You can test is on a smaller file FileStream newFileNamed: '/tmp/pharo.png' do: [ :fileStream | | entity | fileStream binary. entity := ZnClient new streaming: true; get: 'http://www.pharo-project.org/images/pharo.png'; entity. entity writeOn: fileStream ] Now, you are right that there should be some convenience method to make that easier. I'll think about it for a bit and let you know if I can come up with something. HTH, Sven -- Sven Van Caekenberghe http://stfx.eu Smalltalk is the Red Pill

Well... secure steps are overrated this days ;) Ok, being serious: we were introducing Nautilus, and Nautilus has all those requirements... it is maybe a bit too much, but since many of them does not overlap with existing base (AFAIK, just keymapping can cause some interaction problems, if it fails), I don't think is a big issue right now. And you know, this is really early 2.0, things are going to get worse before it starts to get better, but once we stabilize, it will be not better, just great :) Esteban On Apr 25, 2012, at 7:25 PM, Stéphane Ducasse wrote: > Esteban > > are you sure that loading everything is the best move right now. > I would have started one by one. Stef, The first thing that I ran into is that the attributes for Pharo2.0 need to be updated ... right now: ConfigurationOfGrease project attributes returns: an OrderedCollection(#common #squeakCommon #pharo #'pharo1.x' #'pharo1.4.x') Looks like SmalltalkImage>>metacelloPlatformAttributes needs to be updated to return: #(#squeakCommon #pharo #'pharo2.x' #'pharo2.0.x') Dale ----- Original Message ----- | From: "Stéphane Ducasse" <stephane.ducasse(a)inria.fr> | To: Pharo-project(a)lists.gforge.inria.fr | Sent: Wednesday, April 25, 2012 10:26:18 AM | Subject: Re: [Pharo-project] Who is maintaining the Grease configuration | | Thanks | I will start to add the pharo2.0.x to some configurations too. | | Stef | | > I'm the editor for the Grease configuration, so I'll take this on | > ... | > | > Dale | > | > ----- Original Message ----- | > | From: "Stéphane Ducasse" <stephane.ducasse(a)inria.fr> | > | To: "Pharo-project(a)lists.gforge.inria.fr Development" | > | <Pharo-project(a)lists.gforge.inria.fr> | > | Sent: Wednesday, April 25, 2012 7:37:14 AM | > | Subject: [Pharo-project] Who is maintaining the Grease | > | configuration | > | | > | Because we should create a symbolic version for 20 | > | | > | This package depends on the following classes: | > | BlockContext | > | You must resolve these dependencies before you will be able to | > | load | > | these definitions: | > | fixCallbackTemps | > | tempVarRefs | > | valueWithPossibleArguments: | > | | > | | > | | > | | |

Hi, I am a bit puzzled by the current trend of 2.0. Are these additions part of the image, or will they be loaded continuously on top of a seed image? If it's the former, I thought that we discussed a while ago to keep the image to a minimum, and, in particular, to not load RB in it. Or did anything change in the meantime?
