[Pharo-project] on Raspberry Pi

by Pavel Krivanek

Hi, one my friend got Raspberry Pi yesterday so I have seen it in action. I had almost no time for experiments but I have seen Fedora 17 on it with standard Squeak (3.10) packages for this distro on FullHD display. On that VM (3.10.5) I got about 40M bytecodes/sec and 1M sends/sec. The environment is not extra fast but usable without problems. I will pray for successful GSoC ARM JIT project :-) The device was connected to the professional meter and the power consumption was about 3.5W. Cheers, -- Pavel

[Pharo-project] Fwd: Do you know any candidates for assistant positions in our department

by Stéphane Ducasse

Begin forwarded message: > From: Kim Mens <Kim.Mens(a)uclouvain.be> > Subject: Do you know any candidates for assistant positions in our department > Date: May 10, 2012 10:28:45 AM GMT+02:00 > To: researchers RELEASED <released(a)listes.uclouvain.be> > > Dear all, > > I am urgently looking for possible candidates to fill up some teaching and research assistants in our department. Such an assistant typically has teaching and research duties and gets up to 6 years to obtain a PhD (to be renewed every 2 years). The 6 years is because of the extra teaching load as compared to a normal researchers. Regarding research, they get to choose what professor they want to do research with and negotiate the research topic with him; evidently I'm open to have them under my guidance, but the choice is up to them. Regarding teaching, the teaching charges are distributed equally among the different assistants based on their capacities and interests. The positions are very interesting, and they get a real contract and fair salary (as compared to some other countries). A university level degree of master in computer science or computing science engineering (or something equivalent) is a must. (For foreigners, equivalence of their diploma will need to be verified but that can be done afterwards I think.) Knowledge of French is strongly desired because the bachelor years are still taught in French and we are already quite short on French-speaking researchers to help out with teaching duties in the bachelor years. Knowledge of English is also positive since our Master years are taught in English. Anyway, if you would know anyone, please pass them this information. The deadline is very short since all forms need to be filled in and submitted electronically by May 18, which would mean they need to start working on it right now. A internal selection commission of professors from our department will select the three best candidates from all those who applied. > > More instructions on how to apply can be found here : > http://www.uclouvain.be/11617.html > The candidate needs to fill out the digital form that is available there. If they click on "Listes des postes vacants" they will see the different vacancies currently available for the entire university. The ones related to our department can be found under the faculty "Ecole Polytechnique de Louvain" and more specifically the vacancies with identification numbers 00001941, 00002203, en 00004257. > You will see that 2 of these 3 have a description that is particularly dedicated to computer science. The third one looks more general, but in fact it has been decided recently that it will also go to computer science, but we weren't able to change the description anymore. Interested candidates should thus fill in the form and are strongly advised to apply to each of the 3 positions, even though they can receive only one. (I agree the procedure is a bit absurd, but what did you expect, this is Belgium.) > > Of course you can always contact me for more information or if the procedure is not 100% clear (even though I also had to look all of this up on the official university webpage). > > That's it for now... > > Thanks for your attention to this mail. > > Prof. Kim Mens > Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) > Institute of Information & Communication Technologies, Electronics and Applied Mathematics (ICTEAM) > Ingénierie Informatique (INGI) > Place Sainte Barbe 2, B-1348 Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgique > kim.mens(a)uclouvain.be > > >

If you analyze dzindzik, its correct. I mean, the order in its instVars are correct. Its problem is "thisClass". As you could notice, you could not inspect thisClass because you get an error with the "Directory does not have index: 7". So, go to SystemWindows and change this method to: SystemWindow >> #labelled: labelString ^self new setLabel: 'caca' What we do is to be able to open the inspector while avoiding to ask for its class for the label (since it is broken). Now you are able to inspect thisClass. When you inspect this class, you will see that the first instVars (superclass, methodDict and format) are all correct. 'layout' is nil and from there, all instVars are shifted one slot. The instvar instanceVariables have a classOrganizer. The instVar subclasses has the name, etc... so... thisClass subclasses -> #Object Of course, you cannot inspect the last instVar 'localSelectors' because you are going out of the scope ;) In summary it looks like dzindzik is anoher Metaclass of Object, say Object class (whose instVars are correct), and dzindzik class is Object but with broken (shifted) instVars. That's all we could fine so far with Guille :) > So dzindzik's class thinks it has (at least) seven inst vars, but in fact > in does only have six. > > Herby > > -- Mariano http://marianopeck.wordpress.com

Re: [Pharo-project] [Vm-dev] Re: StackVM on iOS: the return

by phil＠highoctane.be

I have been able to get it build. Set ConfigurationBuilDir to $(BUILD_DIR)/$(CONFIGURATION) and the next entry (temp) to $(PROJECT_TEMP_DIR)/$(CONFIGURATION) This will make it build. But then, this is what I get with the code base in the Xcode debug log when running on the iPad: 2012-05-10 10:01:39.695 iStackVM[1954:707] Application windows are expected to have a root view controller at the end of application launch errno 12 startOfmmapForANONMemory failed: Cannot allocate memory At this point, either we can look at this at PharoConf or this path is definitely dead in the water for me. I'll switch back to regular Xcode Objective-C and other platforms as this is not looking like a very viable target despite the potential benefits. Enough time lost. That's too bad since iPad is the fastest growing consumer level device taking over the world and it is not getting enough love. CMake reminders me of Maven2: an excellent tool, provided you invest 3 months straight in getting all the warts out. A single basic Xcode project would suffice and be easier to maintain. Thanks Nicolas. I would appreciate any effort in this directory since I also have a 10gb package-cache and yes, I know it is slow. Hi, yes... cmake is still not making a good job on creating xcode projects. For now, I touch that manually after generation, I still didn't find the time to correct it... if you find a way, please let me know. btw... I think this vm related stuff belongs to vm-dev list, I'm redirecting there. best, Esteban On May 10, 2012, at 9:46 AM, phil(a)highoctane.be wrote: > Hello > > I've been updating the blessed/ thing from git (pull, merge master), taken a fresh image, loaded the 4.7 and generated sources. > > Cmake and fix works. > > Project opens in XCode 4.3 > > But... > > The linking step fails because the .a files for the plugins aren't found. > > I can't figure out why since all this Cmake machinery makes a ton of scripts all over the place. > > Any clue to get me out of that? > > Thanks! > > Philippe Back
