I expect a working Smalltalk image for Raspberry Pi on a continuous integration server would attract a lot of good attention from the wider community.

[Pharo-project] [OT] ffs!

by Igor Stasenko

i found this funny.. most of you probably know, what ffs means.. if not, see here: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=FFS but standard C library says otherwise: FFS(3) BSD Library Functions Manual FFS(3) NAME ffs, ffsl, fls, flsl -- find first or last bit set in a bit string ... ffs! why using such obscure naming?!?! and this is one of the examples, why i prefer smalltalk over C. -- Best regards, Igor Stasenko.

The question is -- is there some more documentation than just some clippings from an email correspondence? If I understand you correctly people 'forgot' to take them out and so this syntax stayed. Is it used much? Would it be possible to deprecate this usage and reuse the syntax for implementing literal dictionaries 'JSON style'? --Hannes

Re: [Pharo-project] [Vm-dev] Re: Can OSProcess functionality be implemented using FFI instead of plugin?

by Nick Ager

<snip> Well, like opendbx, maybe because opengl has quite standard interface... </snip> and <snip> It's not that it's not doable, it's that we gonna reinvent gaz plant and it gonna be so boring... I'd like to see a proof of concept, even if we restrict to libc, libm, kernel.dll, msvcrt.dll ... </snip> <snip> Is the unix style select() ubiquitous or should I use WaitForMultipleObject() on Windows? Are specification of read/write streams implementation machine independant (bsd/sysv/others...) </snip> Perhaps *a* way forward is to try to find existing projects which have already created cross-platform abstractions for platform specific functionality. Then we can use FFI to access that interface in a similar way to OpenGL and OpenDBX. For example NodeJs works across unixes - perhaps they have a useful cross-platform abstraction, boost has abstractions of IPC etc Nick
