CPU. The reason for which is that ioRelinquishProcessor() is implemented in precisely the fashion Eliot described it in his earlier message, by calling a blocking function which wakes up when there is some activity (either UI or other such as sockets). [Pharo-project] About announcements

by Santiago Bragagnolo

Hi All! Im adding an announcer in my project, 'cause, in order to build a call graph, ill need to know about inferencer-stack movements. I was thinking, the meaning of it is to create an announcement object with it configuration for any push or pop of a stack that's similar to the runtime stack, these are a lots lots lots of objects proably with lesser optimization than BlockClosure. I was thinking in add extension methods that allow me something like self announce: [ StackPush new ] ifAnyIsInteresetedIn: StackPush. Well, i have two questions: a) Am i right? b) subscriptions variable at SubscriptionRegistry is an OrderedCollection, but is commonly accessed to get the subscriptors related with some concrete type, why not a Dictionary? is not faster than an OrderCollection in the tipical case of use? Ok, it could complicate calls like 'remove: subscriptor' but, commonly if you have the subscriptor, you have the Announcement type. Maybe the common ammount of subscriptors in a announcer is too little? Thanks!

Hi Igor, Quoting Igor Stasenko <siguctua(a)gmail.com>: > > i just wonder, what takes so much CPU time, even if it completely idle... > > > 4831- NBCog 4.8 > 51519- NBCog 3.5 > > if i kill a UI process, the load goes down to 2.5-3 % ... > still too much. Well, there are both image and VM issues here. I'll assume you're running Pharo on a Mac. Running Cuis on a Mac, when idle, uses 2.6 - 2.7%. So, the UI process can be optimized to the point where it takes almost zero CPU. But there are VM platform code issues too. Doing the same on a Windows 7 Atom netbook, Cuis uses 0% (zero!) CPU. > i would like to know how we can minimize this. > The reason why i concerned is straightly pragmatic: extending battery life.. > > i found that if i run completely on battery.. it depleting quite fast > with VM running (and i don't do anything just coding, i.e not running > benchmarks, but more thinking and typing). > > -- > Best regards, > Igor Stasenko. > Cheers, Juan Vuletich

Basically, instead of ioRelinquishProcessorForMicroseconds the VM should enter a blocking call that will terminate when the next delay or i/o event occurs. This requires rearchitecting delays because currently the VM polls for delay expiry. For the VM to block while a delay is active there must be a delay callback/signal/interrupt etc that has the side-effect of terminating the blocking call. > > > 4831- NBCog 4.8 > 51519- NBCog 3.5 > > if i kill a UI process, the load goes down to 2.5-3 % ... > still too much. > > i would like to know how we can minimize this. > The reason why i concerned is straightly pragmatic: extending battery > life.. > > i found that if i run completely on battery.. it depleting quite fast > with VM running (and i don't do anything just coding, i.e not running > benchmarks, but more thinking and typing). > > -- > Best regards, > Igor Stasenko. > -- best, Eliot

Hi, Here are the instructions I sent to the pharo mailing list for how to install Athens (I also added this comment to the ConfigurationOfAthens): 1. Install Cairo on your machine For example, for Mac, you open the terminal and run: sudo port install -f cairo +universal More information can be found here: http://cairographics.org/download/ 2. Download the NativeBoost enabled Cog VM from: https://ci.lille.inria.fr/pharo/view/NativeBoost/ 3. Get a Pharo image and run: Gofer new squeaksource: 'Athens'; package: 'ConfigurationOfAthens'; load. (Smalltalk at: #ConfigurationOfAthens) loadDevelopment 4. Play with it. For example: VGTigerDemo runDemo Cheers, Doru On 4 Jun 2012, at 23:12, Alexandre Bergel wrote: >> Thanks alex and others. >> Now did you have a look at Athens? >> Because you have vector graphics inside the image **now**. >> And this is working. > > I do not understand. Re: [Pharo-project] ClassBoxes... bitrotted, or usable?

by Alexandre Bergel

This was the implementation in Modular Smalltalk if I remember correctly. In plain Smalltalk you send a message named #msg and the lookup gives you a compile method. In Modular Smalltalk, there is an intermediary step: #msg -> #Namespace.msg -> compile method Alexandre On Jun 4, 2012, at 8:34 AM, Jan Vrany wrote: > Hi > > > - having a class Selector that get evaluated into a symbol.
