Typically, when a class is accessed, something like PUSH_GLOBAL insn is generated. One may change semantics of this insns to do a proper message send back, effectively doing something like (for instance) self class resolveGlobalByName: globalName This is very flexible and allows for very nice tricks. This can be further performance-optimized. One may use a sort of an inline cache keeping a pair - function pointer to a function that returns desired value and a "cached data". Initially, the function would be initialized to a function that calls back smalltalk code like the one above. However, the smalltalk code __may__ decide that the resolution is "stable" (i.e., next time the code runs, same class should be returned) and fill the cache. The standard smalltalk resolve method then would look like resolveGlobalByName: globalName cache: cache | v | v := Smalltalk at: v cache bindTo: v where the cache is Smalltalk reflection object representing this kind-of-inline cache. When properly JITed, the cost of global access would the same as before (except of the very first one) - ideally just one memory fetch. [Pharo-project] Updating a Plugin on Jenkins

by Sean P. DeNigris

I'd like to update the URL Trigger plugin to the latest version before proceeding with "Issue 6076: Pharo Jenkins build triggers not working". Is it alright if I do that and restart through the web UI? That's how I do it on my personal Jenkins, but wanted to check first with the Jenkins team... Thanks, Sean -- View this message in context: http://forum.world.st/Updating-a-Plugin-on-Jenkins-tp4636979.html Sent from the Pharo Smalltalk mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

You actually just need the image and changes files. If you had used the standalone VM that Sven linked to, you'd hook it up with your image in the standard Mac app ways, e.g.: * double click on the VM... a window will pop up to select an image * from the command line - /path/to/CogVm (inside the .app) my_image.image - open CogWhatever.app ... -- View this message in context: http://forum.world.st/Pharo-1-4-and-Zodiac-tp4636907p4636977.html Sent from the Pharo Smalltalk mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

Re: [Pharo-project] Encodings, Charsets, converters... streams?

by Guillermo Polito

I've spent 3 hours on trying to understand deeply the Multilingual mess, but I'm dying in the process... It mixes environments with charsets... Some charsets and converters are for really old OS versions... Sometimes it uses unicode, some times not... argggdsdsa On Wed, Jun 27, 2012 at 5:25 PM, Stéphane Ducasse <stephane.ducasse(a)inria.fr > wrote: > ok but how can we build a concrete roadmap. > What are the steps that we can take and perform one by one. > > Stef > > On Jun 27, 2012, at 3:11 PM, Henrik Sperre Johansen wrote: > > > On 25.06.2012 18:06, Denis Kudriashov wrote: > >> Hello. > >> > >> What is responsibility of environments (russian, japanese) classes. > >> Why its needed?
