[Pharo-project] Please help! Weird error!

by Steven R. Baker

Heya folks, I've got a failing test here, screenshot attached. When I inspect events, it contains the mock I'm looking for. For some reason, the self assert: (events includes: mockEvent1) fails. But when I inspect, events is an OrderedCollection with one item, and it appears to be the mock. Please help! Thanks in advance! -Steven

[Pharo-project] Smalltalkhub non-mcz files

by Ben Coman

Does Smalltalkhub allow non-mcz files into the repository - for example for file based data required for Tests and examples? Or what is the preferred way of versioning test data and example data along with the source code? cheers -ben

[Pharo-project] Contribution CI Semantics

by Ben Coman

Just curious about how the Contribution CI is set up. Is is based off the latest ConfigurationOf or just the latest mcz loaded in the folder? Will you be running a #stable as well as #development jobs for contributions? Or will that decision be configured somehow by the contribution developers, who may want to choose one of four quadrants from... x-axis 1. Pharo 2.x 2. Pharo 3.x y-axis A. Contribution #stable B. Contribution #development 1A. Presumed this should _always_ be green. Perhaps automatically copied to the ConfigurationBrowser repository. Gives Pharo developers early opportunity to see the impact of bug fix leading up to a minor release. 1B. Mostly green jobs and usually only temporarily red. It would be interesting if the CI/Smalltalkhub integration being developed could help moving a green 1B job to 1A with a minimum of steps - perhaps a single click. 2A. Red contribution jobs expected and maybe last a long time, but useful for giving contribution developers early opportunity to track which infrastructure changes caused the red job. 2B. For the fastest feedback cycle for those contribution developers working on the bleeding edge in parallel with Pharo developers. Of course that increases the CI resource requirements and additional effort to set up, but just something to consider... cheers -ben

That is what Dolphin Smalltalk has been doing since version 4, it installs to the shared location, and in the first run it copies the image to your documents folder (by default). Although I'm ok with "portable" way of doing it, it is better to be able to have the executable in a common location. That will enable Windows users to download "pharo" (and then predefined VM's), or run stuff like "apt-get install pharo-vm" Regards!

I wouldn't say right, but at least I'd hear what he has to say. Outsiders usually have the best feedback because they don't have any attachment with the product and/or community. Regards!

[Pharo-project] Reproducible VM crash when loading FFI

by Guillermo Polito

Hi! In my quest to crash the vm, i've found an ugly common case :(. I am trying to port the opendbx driver to 2.0, but I'm getting vm crashes when my configuration loads FFI :(. I updated my configuration to load version 1.7 of FFI (which I assume is the latest). I tried to do it in Pharo 2.0 with latest pharovm, and with eliot's Cog 2701 from his website, failing in both cases. The snippet of code that gets a sistematic crash is: Gofer it smalltalkhubUser: 'DBXTalk' project: 'DBXTalkDriver'; package: 'ConfigurationOfOpenDBXDriver'; load. ((Smalltalk at: #ConfigurationOfOpenDBXDriver) project version:#stable) load This snippet crashes always with a segmentation fault (at least the fifteen times i tried :), with several different output in the console... Surprisingly, if I load FFI alone and not from the OpenDBXDriver configuration, it loads well... :/ So I'm deferring the OpenDBX port a bit longer :( Thanks! Guille

Please, please, please do not support the App Store. It is a rotten freedom stealing idea. Additionally, Apple does not know better than I what software I want on my machine; and incidentally, has no business knowing what software I run either. All the Application bundle should be assume=d to be in a read only state possibly on a read only drive, On reason is to allow multiple users to use the same Application without overwriting each others work. . In 10.8 and with various setups (see Gatekeeper) the applications are signed to make sure no virus or anything else alter them, I note that Pharo is not signed and so I have to disable signed checks for all applications on OSX. > > For OSX what should probably happen is that the image is saved to ~/Library/Application Support, either by a stub program copying the image from the app bundle on first startup or by altering the save method > Yes, this is why we are going away from the One-Click concept. The idea is that you install "Pharo2" or "Pharo3" or "Pharo4" on you system, like any Application. This means for windows, there will be an installer, for Mac it might be in the App Store even. This Pharo Application is the VM and *read only* image. When you start Pharo it will open this image and ask you to save it to your home dir. This will take some time until we reach there, though. On Tuesday we made a first step into the future direction of how Pharo will be distributed. As 2.0 is released, this is for the next development phase (Pharo3): http://www.pharo-project.org/pharo-download/alpha-3-0 We might back=port it, but keep in mind that our resources are limited and we need to carefully assess where to spend time.
