modeling Zinc request method

by Tudor Girba

Hi, The recently announced cool tutorial on using Zinc made me read the Zinc code in a bit more detail. I must admit, it makes for a nice read. In the process, I stumbled across: knownHTTPMethods ^ #( "Standard HTTP 1.1 Verbs" GET PUT POST DELETE HEAD TRACE OPTIONS CONNECT PATCH "WebDAV verbs" PROPFIND PROPPATCH MKCOL COPY MOVE LOCK UNLOCK) I would propose to model these as classes (inheriting from ZnRequestMethod). If we would have such a hierarchy, then the following code: ZnSingleThreadedServer>>handleRequest: request ... request method = #HEAD ifTrue: [ response clearEntity ]. Could become something like: ZnSingleThreadedServer>>handleRequest: request ... request method clearEntityForSingleThreadedServerResponse: response ZnRequestMethod>>clearEntityForSingleThreadedServer: aResponse "nothing" ZnHeadRequestMethod>>clearEntityForSingleThreadedServer: aResponse aResponse clearEntity What do you think? Cheers, Doru -- www.tudorgirba.com "Not knowing how to do something is not an argument for how it cannot be done."

[ANN} Pharo Consultants

by Sven Van Caekenberghe

Dear Fellow Pharoers, We are happy to announce a new initiative, a listing of Pharo Consultants, http://consultants.pharo.org If you are able and willing to provide professional Pharo Consultancy services and would like to be listed as such, please send the necessary info to board(a)pharo.org so that we can include you. This is a listing of individuals. Apart from your knowledge of and involvement with Pharo itself, the only requirement is that you are either a paying Pharo Association (http://association.pharo.org) member or related to one of the members of the Pharo Consortium (http://consortium.pharo.org) The recorded information is minimal, but includes a link to a website. The order of the listing itself is randomised each time it is generated. Your email address will be obfuscated a bit to limit spam. As a Pharo Consultant, you can advertise that fact using a nice URL, http://consultants.pharo.org#seandenigris Cool, right ? Please provide your info in one of the following forms. Smalltalk expression: PharoConsultant new name: 'Sven Van Caekenberghe'; location: 'Hasselt, Belgium'; email: 'sven(a)stfx.eu'; website: 'http://stfx.eu'; languages: 'Dutch (native), English, French, German'; industryExperienceSince: 1990; smalltalkExperienceSince: 1993; pharoExperienceSince: 2010; areasOfExpertise: 'Web Services & Applications, Servers, Networking, Protocols'; yourself STON: PharoConsultant { #name : 'Sven Van Caekenberghe', #email : 'sven(a)stfx.eu', #website : 'http://stfx.eu', #location : 'Hasselt, Belgium', #languages : 'Dutch (native), English, French, German', #areasOfExpertise : 'Web Services & Applications, Servers, Networking, Protocols', #industryExperienceSince : 1990, #pharoExperienceSince : 2010, #smalltalkExperienceSince : 1993 } Regards, Sven, on behalf of the Pharo Board. PS: The Pharo Contributors page will get an overhaul soon too.

Yes, it would be good if someone wrote a beautiful tutorial with a focus on TDD. For this subject and this tutorial, the tests are more functional tests than unit tests. I feel that it would be hard to do a web app fully TDD. But who knows, I like to read nice tutorials and learn something new as well ;-) Sven

That, and some of the other issues that you have raised with respect to could development & deployment, are part of advanced distributed software development, management and operations. Yes, every growing application will eventually get there. But it is a complex subject matter that can only be solved by combining the expertise of many disciplines. The first step is to build something that grows popular enough that it needs scaling. Sven

Too bad digital ocean doesn't allow the creation of droplets at the moment. AMS and NYC are over capacity, only SF. That's no option from Europe due to latency. Stephan
