[OT] Speed of light 6-2-2014

by Torsten Bergmann

some quotes: "Borrowed largely (or shamelessly copied) from Smalltalkâs message sending syntax ..." "Categories or through runtime functions (more on those soon) itself, but Objective Câs objects pale in comparison to those of a Smalltalk-like environment, where objects are always live and browsable" "So if a successor language is to emerge, itâs got to come from elsewhere." "It seems absurd that 30 years after the Mac we still build the same applications the same ways. It seems absurd we still havenât really caught up to Smalltalk. It seems absurd beautiful graphical applications are created solely and sorely in textual, coded languages. And it seems absurd to rely on one vendor to do something about it." see http://nearthespeedoflight.com/article/2014_02_06_objective_c_is_a_bad_lang…

Thanks a lot, Johan & Ben, this is great work ! This documentation is up-to-date with the latest version of Spec, and is focused towards people wanting to use it and even extend it (in contrast to the academic papers which are ⦠academic ;-) ). I hope that this text will help all the people that are building UIs in Pharo, and it will clear up any doubts that they may have. > > The chapter is available in source form from the GitHub project of the PFTE book: https://github.com/SquareBracketAssociates/PharoForTheEnterprise-english > > The easiest way to read the chapter is from the continuous integration server, which produces a html file of the chapter here: > https://ci.inria.fr/pharo-contribution/job/PharoForTheEnterprise/lastSucces… > (The same server also produces pdf and markdown files, but there are some strange artifacts there, currently. Awesome. I'll try your code. And a 1.2 to see a screen :-) One more step to VM understanding here! The monkey lamented on problems (merge conflict) which is strange. Nonetheless I double checked and Christophe confirmed the change for Versionner, so please integrate: https://pharo.fogbugz.com/f/cases/12852 Thanks in advance T.

Simulator in Pharo 3

by Stefan Marr

Hi: Below you see the result of today, the simulator for the StackInterpreter running in a Pharo 3 image. Over the last years, people have been tinkering with the simulator from time to time, but I have the feeling everyone gave up before the thing was fully functioning, and not even the trivial things have found their way back into the VM code base. I am aware that Phil was busy with it recently, but I think there was also someone else posting notes here. Would be great if those people could send me their change sets so that I can try getting everything working again. As you can see in the screenshot, the simulator loads up properly, and executes the first 10,000,000 bytecodes. Which is enough to make it notice that a primitive fails, and to pop up the error dialog. However, it is a Pharo 1.2 image. Later images trigger some bug, I havenât identified yet. They execute code, but donât manage to bring up the display. Thanks to having a unified code repository, everything I got so far (minus a few small changes) is here: https://github.com/smarr/pharo-vm/tree/fixes/simulator-bit-rot More to come soon. Re: [Pharo-dev] Playing an mp3

As far as I know pharoSound only plays AIF and WAV. Phratch certanly has MP3 playing abilities - but I've only tried it on Linux and MP3s do not play. -- View this message in context: http://forum.world.st/Playing-an-mp3-tp4742737p4743093.html Sent from the Pharo Smalltalk Developers mailing list archive at Nabble.com.
