Re: [Pharo-dev] New methods for the String class

by Pharo4Stef

Daniela you should try the method finder open it and select the example in the dropbox then you can type examples and see if a method already implement it for example âabcabâ . âaâ . âbcb' shows that copyWithoutAll: is the method. but it expects a character as second argument âabcabâ . $a . âbcbâ Stef On 24 Feb 2014, at 18:30, Daniela Meneses <daniela11290(a)gmail.com> wrote: > Hi to all, > > As you may know I'm working on in some improvements for the String class. The base level should be extremely flexible (to the point that to you can break *any* Smalltalk convention). Any kind of checks for âbest practicesâ should be done on level up on the tool level, and even there only if really needed. (in the past we had the idea to provide feedback e.g. to not have instance variables with capital letters, but this should *never* be enforced on the low level, as for DSLs, research hacks and real cool stuff (TM) people need all flexibility) Pharo uses (right now) RBParser as the main Parser⦠in Pharo4 we will remove the old Parser (subclass of Scanner ;-), on the TODO is to check if PetitParser can be used instead (but there are many open questions related to e.g. error handling, speedâ¦) Marcus

collecting Pharo Youtube videos...

by Marcus Denker

Hi, There are a lot of videos on youtube about pharo⦠from conferences, demos, jamesâ Smalltalk4U, fosdem, ESUG, and others. I am (very slowly) adding playlists for all of them to the Pharo Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCp3mNigANqkesFzdm058bvw/playlists If you have videos that you want to see added, send me a mail. The channel itself is here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCp3mNigANqkesFzdm058bvw It could use some more subscribers ;-) Marcus

Authorize upArrow in binary symbols

by Nicolas Cellier

Though being reserved for return statements, the upArrow ^ could perfectly be accepted as a character composing a binary selector, like the verticalBar | already is. Indeed there is no ambiguity, since the return ^ is always prefixed, while a binary message never is... (well, except in the method source, but method source must begin with selector, it cannot begin with a return statement, so no ambinguity there neither...). I don't plan to use or add such selector in core Squeak/Pharo, but I think that it is important to allow a variety of selectors : it allows the most simple DSL : one using Smalltalk syntax (no need to define a new syntax, a new parser, etc...). If we did it for |, I don't see why we shouldn't for ^. Note that we recently also extended usage of - at any place in binary selectors (it was restricted to first position previously), though no core message is concerned so far. The main objection could be that a missing period before a return statement won't be reported, but interpreted as a message send... like in: x := a+b ^x But I don't think it's really a feature stopper. It's very easy to modify the old Compiler and shouldn't be that hard in Opal too. I'll try and push a prototype in Squeak inbox this evening. What do you think?

For example if you want to develop an application for tablets, XULRunner is not the right choice. The same for highly interactive multimedia applications etc. It's aimed on business applications with native look&feel. Pharo wants to provide own multiplatform UI with zoomable accelerated graphics. As the default option. Our tools should be independent on UIframework. That's why we have Spec. I haven't developed Phobos to provide the only right way how to render UI. In fact, classical GUI has the best days behind. On the other hand, Pharostill needs some way how to support it and XULRunner is interesting way how to do that and already working. New methods for the String class

by Daniela Meneses

Hi to all, As you may know I'm working on in some improvements for the String class. Until now I implemented some missing tests. Right now I'm looking forward to add new methods that could be useful based on Ruby API ( http://www.ruby-doc.org/core-2.1.0/String.html) These are a few of the methods that I'm planning to implement: - chomp(separator=$/) -> new_str - chop() -> new_str - ljust(integer, padstr='') ->new_str - next -> new_str - partition(sep) -> [head, sep, tail] Could you help to find out if these methods are already available for the String class? If you have any idea of new methods for the string class, will be really welcome. -- Cheers , Daniela Meneses

Drag&drop on a button

by Martin Dias

Hi, I wonder if either there is something wrong in my code below, or if I found a bug in morphic or spec. I expect to get a halt when drag&dropping an item from the tree into the button but nothing happens: | buttonModel treeModel ui uiLayout | ui := DynamicComposableModel new. treeModel := ui newTree roots: (1 to: 15); dragEnabled: true; yourself. buttonModel := ui newButton label: 'Drop here'; dropEnabled: true; icon: Smalltalk ui icons smallAddIcon; action: [ self halt ]; acceptDropBlock: [ self halt ]; wantDropBlock: [ self halt ]; dragTransformationBlock: [ self halt ]; yourself. ui assign: treeModel to: #treeModel. ui assign: buttonModel to: #buttonModel. uiLayout := SpecLayout composed newColumn: [ :column | column newRow: #treeModel; newRow: #buttonModel height: ui class buttonHeight ]; yourself. ui openWithSpecLayout: uiLayout. Thanks, MartÃn
